"NO GUNS" FOUNDER CAUGHT WITH A GUN
In case you missed it, HECTOR MARROQUIN, the founder of a gang intervention program called NO GUNS, was arrested last week for being in possession of a firearm. As a convicted felon, he isn't allowed to have a gun. And even if he was allowed to own a gun, as head of an organization that calls itself NO GUNS, it would have looked hypocritical anyway. According to some law enforcement sources, Marroquin and his organization have long been suspected of working both sides of the street. In the interest of being fair and balanced, Hector's defenders claim that he's the victim of some kind of law enforcement vendetta to discredit him. Just prior to his arrest, Hector was tapped as an unpaid consultant to a panel of gang experts to revamp the county's largely failing gang intervention programs. The LAT ran a profile of Marroquin and his program in July of 2005. So far, the Times hasn't run anything that we could find on his arrest. Maybe we missed it.
While on the subject of guns, Sheriff Lee Baca is in the spotlight for handing out badges and concealed carry permits to a group of civilian Homeland Security "consultants" that also contributes money to the department. While no one has come right out and said this is an exchange of favors for money, it sure sounds bogus. There's been a long tradition in this state, and others, of rewarding law enforcement "supporters" with honorary titles, badges and carry permits. Rank and file coppers consider handing out "near legal looking" badges to non-sworn personnel as a slap in the face. These supporters have little or no training and they've never put in the time and sweat to become bona fide reserves. It's also a source of anger for law-abiding civilians who can't get permits because they don't have the money that grants them access to people like Baca and other top cops in a position of granting permits. As we've seen with people like Sean Penn, Robert Blake, James Caan, Howard Stern and even anti-gun Senator Dianne Feinstein, if you've got the money and the access, you too can legally defend yourself in a life-threatening situation. The rest of us, well, our skins somehow aren't as precious as those of politicians or actors.

I don't remember hearing that this law was proposed only against Mexicans. I think this would effect everyone, it would give law enforcement the right to harass anyone and use this as an excuse. I am sure that there are many illegal Asians, Middle Eastern ( shoot go to Glendale I'm sure all those Armenians and Persians aren't here legally.) who also should be worried by this. I was born here and I am American by Mexican descent my father came here from Mexico legally just as all of my family, but I still have the Mexican flag tatted on my arm not to disrespect the USA but to show respect and remembrance to those in my family that struggled day in and day out so we would not have to.

March for Our Lives

I was 13 years old in 1968 when the East LA School Blowouts happened (which the current HBO movie, "Walk Out" is based on). Several thousand students, teachers, parents, and supporters stepped out of their schools, confronting police, a confused media, and general indifference (I heard from one young person that she never heard about the "Blowouts" until the HBO film first aired on March 17, although she grew up in LA).
I also walked out of my middle school in 1968, although it was only a handful of us. It became my first political act that would soon become a lifetime of political acts.
Then starting last Friday, thousands of students walked out of LA-area schools (and around the country--I heard from one student activist in Phoenix) against the anti-immigrant Sensenbrenner Bill that passed the House of Representatives in December, and is presently being debated in the Senate. From 500,000 to two million people demonstrated in downtown LA on Saturday--the largest demonstration in the city's history. More demonstrations on Sunday, including one in honor of Cesar Chavez, led to some 40,000 students walking out of schools throughout Southern California on Monday--but also thousands more in the Bay Area and schools from the Midwest to North Carolina.
That morning I almost drove into a couple of hundred students from Sylmar High School as they walked down Hubbard Blvd to San Fernando Road in the Northeast San Fernando Valley. I stopped, honked, and placed my fist in the air. Truckers and others did the same. The students were noisy, but peaceful, displaying a massive Mexican flag (US flags were also quite evident in most of these demonstrations). Later my wife Trini and I caught up with them further along their walk.
By Tuesday, school officials were "locking down" schools (students who come in, won't be allowed to leave until the end of the day). It's no coincidence schools in urban core communities were using prison terms to describe their tactics. For many students, schools are a prison. One adminstrator said the students needed to return to school for their "education." Yet, I see some fantastic education going on in the civil demonstrations and actions the students were taking.
Today, as in 1968, I support these marches. We have seen so many bold infractions and felonies against our future with war (defended by lies), corruption (not just the most recent with Abramoff and DeLay, but the billions stolen by Enron, World Com, Halliburton, and others, all friends of the present White House administration), and civil liberties (Patriot Acts, wiretappings, and torture in US-controlled prisons around the world).
People have to stand up. They must also strategize, think of the next step, reshape the vision, reinvigorate more people, and truly bring about real change.
We need it. The world needs it. In my life--slightly more than 50 years--I've seen the detrimental affects of capitalism, its wars, its divisions, its tactics, and the dense indifferences that result from this.
I'm honored to know our youth, and many of the veteran warriors from the 1960s through the 1980s, are coming together and demanding an end to the direction and motion of this country. Everything the Republicans (and their lame cronies in the Democrats) do now only gets worse for us and worse for them. They don't know how to do anything else.
We can show them there are other ideas. Other ways to go. Where peace, cooperation, community, incorporation, and true security really comes from. At crucial times in history, it's been shown that the people know better than their "leaders."

Students walk out of classes in protest

Thousands of Bay Area students, including hundreds from San Jose, walked out of their classrooms Monday morning to protest immigration reforms, demonstrating at San Jose City Hall, along San Francisco's Market Street and in a few smaller, school-approved rallies.
The mood turned celebratory by evening, when demonstrators learned at a second City Hall rally that a Senate committee eliminated the measure that concerned them most -- a provision that would turn their undocumented parents, relatives or friends into felons.
``That's good news,'' said Heidi Zuniga, 15, holding a candle along with about 200 immigrants and their supporters. ``That's better for all of us.''
Earlier Monday, Heidi was one of as many as 400 students, many of Mexican heritage, shouting slogans and carrying signs in an echo of much larger immigrant rallies across the nation -- 500,000 in Los Angeles, 300,000 in Chicago -- in recent days.
Most of the noontime City Hall protesters came from schools in the San Jose Unified and East Side Union districts, including Lincoln and Downtown College Prep high schools, and Hoover and Joseph George middle schools. Students said they learned of the demonstrations through posters, word of mouth, text messages and the Internet site MySpace.com.
``All the schools are walking out to symbolize how people have to walk across the border,'' said Lilly Yanez, a freshman at Lincoln High School. ``This country is built on immigrants.''
Some students said they felt compelled for the first time in their lives to risk school punishment and take a stand in solidarity with immigrant students and their families.
``My teacher said if we strongly believed in what we believed in, we should go for it,'' said Jazmin Garcia, a 10th-grader at Downtown College Prep who demonstrated at San Jose City Hall.
East Side Union High School District tried to encourage students to stay on campus to express their views -- though about 250 left school for the protests, said Ric Abeyta, assistant superintendent of student services.
At the district's Silver Creek High School, between 40 and 50 students planned to walk out in the morning. But Associate Principal Chris Schroeder intercepted them and offered a choice: Walk out in support of your beliefs and be suspended, or go back to class and hold a noontime rally. The students returned to class, he said; more than 125 attended the campus rally.
At Oak Grove High School about 150 waved signs in front of the school and held an open mic session on the issue in the cafeteria, Abeyta said.
Abeyta said officials would talk to students who left but would not automatically discipline everyone who walked out.
San Jose Unified students who left campus will have to make up the time in Saturday school, district spokeswoman Karen Fuqua said. She estimated that fewer than 50 of the district's students walked out.
Pathfinder High School, a charter school in San Jose, decided to close for the day after almost all of its 55 students left for the protests, executive director Teresa Robinson said. The school doesn't plan to punish students -- many of whom asked if they'd get detention for leaving -- but warned them to keep their protesting peaceful.
``When you have friends and classmates who could suffer because of this, who could be deported because of this, it hits pretty close to home,'' Robinson said.
It is not the first time Bay Area students have taken to the streets over immigrant issues: Some walked out in 2003 as part of La Huelga, a national strike day to protest the treatment of Mexican-Americans and Mexican immigrants, and large numbers protested in 1994 over Proposition 187, which would have denied public benefits to illegal immigrants in California and was later ruled unconstitutional.
About 1,000 protesters in San Francisco, many of them students who walked out of their San Francisco and Oakland high school classrooms, clogged several blocks of Market Street at lunchtime as they headed to Sen. Dianne Feinstein's downtown San Francisco office. ``It's injustice, these anti-immigration laws,'' said Carlota Flores of East Palo Alto, a student at Cañada College who attended the San Francisco protest.
In San Jose, some students said they knew it was serious to leave school and were prepared to accept any consequences.
``If our parents hadn't immigrated here, none of us would be here,'' said Diego Gomez, a 10th-grader at Downtown College Prep.
His mother, Teresa Castellanos, didn't know that her son was going to the protest Monday, but she did not object. ``I support him in it,'' she said. Upon learning that police had estimated that up to 400 students had come to be heard, Castellanos added, ``How beautiful.''

If someone is truly interested in doing research on prison gangs (membership, members, events, etc), what resources besides the obvious (internet, library, books) are available? I've already gone through FBI documents released under the Freedom of Information Act, read some California studies, done some internet searches, etc. Is it possible to obtain California and Federal court records involving known prison gang members? Also, how does one go about obtaining photographs, videos, interviews without being either employed by or incarcertated in prison? I would like to obtain a copy of the PB riot mentioned in another thread (- even better would be video and testimony of the Corcoran prison fights); however, this type of thing seems to be very hard to come by.

Was there any paticular reason that Jack Mahone was considered the 'Godfather' and what became of him? Is it possible to trace the gang's leadership from this beginning to the present?
As someone just mentioned earlier, the informants and witnesses do outnumber the defendants and one former AB member-turned-informant named Mike Thomson is probably just as dangerous as the defendants!

Its good to see our youth making a stand but it would do them better to stay in school and educate themselves so they at least know what they are marching against.
At the very least they should know that they are losing their schools tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars every day they are not in school and most of these schools can't afford that kind of loss.

Like Washington DC, Virginia, North Carolina, Atlanta. Most of those places are "Red States" too.
I hate to admit, but I do think there needs to be more control on the borders. The legislature they are proposing does allow "Guest workers" to come back and forth to allow the jobs to be done that none of our fine U.S. Citizens want to do. That is a good stating point but they need to tweak it a bit. Did you know there are almost as many illegal Canadiens in this country as there are mexicans???
I've paid taxes all my life and the last thing I want to see is a undocumented worker getting drunk, driving unlicensed and uninsured and then commiting a hit and run because they don't want to get deported. I recall several members turning over to Christianity. Besides the usual list of "dos and do-nots", they seem to be fully aware of what they were up against. In the case of a certain guy (Freddy G), he told me that he himself stabbed M members that became Christians. Yet, he became one himself, and fully accepted the fact that his name was in the hat. He claimed that it was worth it.

Hey all you internet camarada's, these new proposed law's in the US Senate are just vindictive bullshit that creates animosity among the working class of the country,and is both a smokescreen to cover up the disastrous policies of our Gov't and a "divide and conquer" ploy to keep everyone at each others throats and not focus on the real issues at hand.
Maybe realistic solutions to the immigration situation should come from "us the people" since we seem to have no leadership from our or the Mexican Gov't.
Let me throw out a couple of ideas of mine and maybe others have some too. Fuck I don't presume to have the magic wand here but shit our leaders of all stripes and parties won't do shit but hid their heads in the sand, collect the checks, and smile at re-election time.
How about giving all Mexican and Canadian citizens a special classification as North American's and if they wish to emigrate to the US all they would have to do is fork over say $2,500.00 each (shit that's what they pay a coyote now!) They would sign a contract allowing a criminal background check, DNA ID sample, health check, etc;
They would get an legal ID, Social Security Card, and all rights a US citizen would get.
If they fuck up and commit a felony it would be an automatic minimum five years in the joint and deportation. If they sneak back it's ten years.
The Mexican Gov't,which now receives "Billions" from Mexicano's working in the US,and after the "oil industry" is the largest source of money that supports the corrupt Mexican Gov't., would provide a bond or some kind of insurance to pay for "medical cost's" incurred for it's citizens while working in the US. After say Five years with no problems an immigrant could apply for and receive Citizenship.
Any small business's owned by an immigrant would not be stiffled or
penalized by any Gov't agency, and any moneys earned honestly could be moved freely amoung the North AMerican countries without punitive taxation.
This special agreement would apply only to US, Mexican, and Canadian citizens due the shared history's and cultures.
Any other foreign nationals would be treated differently and if caught illegally in these country's would be automatically subject to one year in prison, loss of all money and property, and immediate expulsion.
The US dollar would be used exclusively and countefeiting punishable by death or life in prison.
No Multinational Corps or business's over a certain size would be allowed to operate in the other countries. (that's why the Mexican revolution took place, the Mining, Railroad, Steel, Oil corps were raping and pillaging in Mexico), but small business's incouraged and given tax breaks if employing workers.
All the above agreements would be reciprocal to the US, Mexico, and Canada, equally.
If the Mexican Govt does not agree immediatly to the treaty then all Mexican Citizens should be repatriated immediatly and the border sealed off by the US armed forces.

Illegal immigration is a double edged sword. Ziska didn’t want a jury trial. He thought the ways of his former world, as a $66,000-a-year guard at Chino's state prison, too complex for 12 men and women to understand. He preferred leaving it to a man in a black robe to decide whether all the bad things inmates and a couple of guards said about him were true.
For six days last month, his accusers took the stand in federal court, telling Judge Terry Hatter Jr. how the 44-year-old Ziska befriended members of a white-supremacist prison-based gang called the Nazi Low Riders (a.k.a. “the Ride”). They said he preached “white power” ideology and referred to black inmates as “rugs,” “porch monkeys” and “niggers.”
When Ziska was on duty at the California Institution for Men at Chino, the usual rules of prison life did not apply. He often allowed his favorite white inmates out of their cells to plot crimes and to retaliate against other inmates for violating the gangster’s code of conduct. To control his empire, “Z,” as his friends called him, housed his favorite white inmates together and occasionally smuggled heroin and methamphetamine inside letters for them. He would allow white inmates to make wine in their cells, and often looked the other way when a beating went down. He was the “go-to” guy for certain “buddies” in need of razors.
For four years, from 1996 to 2000, Ziska’s renegade regime ruled the prison walls, including the 200-inmate Madrone Hall, where he was one of three guards per shift. He insinuated himself into many parts of inmate life. He was a leader and teacher, instructing inmates in self-defense, with tips on how to take away a weapon from a guard. He was a philosopher, preaching about Friedrich Nietzsche and Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf.
The 5-foot-10, wiry-yet-muscular Ziska, his blond hair cut short, denied all of it when he took the stand for an hour or so on the final day of his trial in downtown Los Angeles. “I am there to protect them,” said Ziska. “I don’t share anything in common with the NLR.”
After a lunch break, Judge Hatter issued his verdict: guilty on one count of violent crime in aid of racketeering, one count of deprivation of civil rights under the color of law, and one count of conspiracy. Hatter, in scathing remarks about the Corrections Department’s poor record in addressing its problems, thanked the U.S. Attorney’s Office for “shining the light on one of the darkest areas of the state.”
The verdict closed the door on a five-year investigation that began in 1999, when the Ontario Police Department looked into a spate of violent crime and an upsurge in meth labs attributed to the Ride. The police finally called in the FBI, and by the end of the probe, 29 members or associates of the gang had been indicted. Most of those named in the 2002 indictment had spent time in Chino’s prison, and two of the nine inmates who agreed to testify against Ziska had been indicted by the feds. Ziska, the only guard implicated, was placed on administrative leave in 2000, ending his hopes of being elected president of the Chino prison union. He was indicted in 2004.
One of the more puzzling aspects of the case is why so few guards came forward to say they noticed anything odd on the days Ziska worked. Guards who testified on Ziska’s behalf denied that there was any “code of silence” that forbade them from saying anything negative about one of the members of their powerful prison-guards union, for which Ziska was a shop steward. “The Shayne Ziska I am familiar with is professional, and he is not someone I think of as a white supremacist,” said Marty Aroian, president of the union’s Chino chapter. “He was a very effective and a dedicated shop steward. He kept the tenets of our organization very well.”
Ziska, a former construction worker, started his career as a correctional officer in 1984, at the age of 22, at the 6,300-inmate Chino prison. His first assignment was on the minimum-security yard, and he graduated to patrolling some of Chino’s most dangerous units, including administrative segregation, where the most violent inmates are kept. Ziska was also a member of the prison SWAT team for three years.
“He was rough around the edges,” said corrections officer Denise Mori Harrison, who worked with Ziska in 1999 and testified on his behalf. “He either liked you or he didn’t.”
Race often made it into his conversations. When Harrison, who is white, married an African-American man, Ziska told her that he was against mixed marriages because he felt sorry for the children. On another occasion, he asked his new Latino partner if he spoke English. “He was a real asshole,” the guard said. “I said, ‘Who the hell is this guy?’ I have been here for 12 years. He said, ‘Do you want to be my partner? Are you going to work?’ He worked my ass off.” He eventually changed his mind and grew to admire Ziska. “We were like brothers there.”
Ziska lived with his wife, Joan, and three sons in nearby Fontana. He was an avid surfer and a black belt in tae kwon do. He also taught martial arts to inner-city youth for more than 20 years.
But Ziska had a darker side. Ziska’s former brother-in-law, Vince Cobbold, a former felon who spent 18 months in jail for selling marijuana and methamphetamine, testified that Ziska was a meth user who once looked into joining the Ku Klux Klan.
“He wanted to know if I wanted an application,” he said. Ziska’s son Ryan described his father as a racist who would have disowned him “if I brought home a nigger.”
The 20-year-old college student recalled how his father would regularly engage his older brother in white-power talk and that he once bragged about beating up a black inmate. His favorite coffee mug had a picture of a swastika. During the trial, Ziska’s attorney, Ira Salzman, accused Ryan of taking his mother’s side after the family’s breakup in 2005.
Ziska extolled the virtues of white power, according to federal prosecutors. He shaved his head bald, sported a skull tattoo with lightning bolts blazing out of its mouth, symbolizing “SS,” and was intolerant of other races. He fit in well with the strict rules and regulations of the Nazi Low Riders white prison gang.
The Nazi Low Riders emerged as a white-supremacist prison gang in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The Ride took over control of the California prison system’s main yards when the Aryan Brotherhood, the leading white prison gang, was systematically disciplined by the Corrections Department and placed in administrative segregation. The Ride agreed to continue the AB's illegal activities and, in 1999, the Ride became a validated prison gang, along with the Mexican Mafia (Eme) and the Black Guerrilla Family.
Membership in the white-race group is by invitation only. New members must commit a violent act and be sponsored by a “senior.” In addition, the gang follows strict rules of conduct. Members cannot work with law enforcement, associate with known sex offenders or engage in “race mixing.” Race mixing includes dating out of your race, and eating with or touching food prepared by another race. While in prison, Ride members must participate in mandatory exercise and physical-training programs and take part in “roll call” — where they identify themselves as members. Members must also donate 10 to 30 percent of all items received through the mail or purchased at the prison store to the shot caller, or senior member, who passes some of it along to members in secure housing units. A member can be stabbed or killed if he rapes or disrespects a fellow member, or claims to be a member before obtaining membership status.
The gang holds power through intimidation and violence. Stabbing is considered a badge of honor.
If a white inmate is in violation of gang rules, it is the white inmates who take care of it. Snitches and child molesters are called “trash.”
Ziska helped clean up the “trash,” or “lames.”
The indictment accused Ride members of ordering hits, committing violent acts, intimidating witnesses, extortion, drug trafficking and numerous weapons violations. The two who agreed to testify against Ziska, in return for lighter sentences for themselves, were Brian “Skully” Roberg and Robert “Bobbo” Wilson, both of whom became Ziska’s pals inside prison walls.
In 2001, Roberg pleaded guilty and received a plea agreement in return for testifying against Ziska. He also was given $2,000 by the FBI for his troubles.
“It was something that I was thinking about for some time,” he said. “I started talking to them [the FBI] initially because of my request. I wanted to change what was getting me busted in my lifestyle.”
It would be Ziska’s undoing. It would also open the floodgates for many more inmates to come forward.
Thirty-four-year-old Brian Roberg was sent to prison at the age of 18. He did time for possession of drugs for sale, armed robbery and possession of a firearm. While in prison, he became affiliated with the Mexican Mafia and the Aryan Brotherhood. In 1998, he was doing time at Chino. It was at Chino that Roberg, also known as “Mother Fucking Skully,” “MFS” and “Rock Solid,” became a full-fledged member of the Ride. It was a steppingstone to becoming a member of the Aryan Brotherhood.
“I wanted to be recognized by the Aryan Brotherhood for work I put in,” testified Roberg. “The NLR are assets to the Aryan Brotherhood for getting work done and spreading the message. It was about Aryan Brotherhood politics. It was about being aggressive with attitude.”
Roberg eventually became the shot caller for the Ride at Chino prison, announcing mandatory workouts in the yard and conducting “church meetings” to discuss gang business. Over a span of two years, he admitted to calling hits on five inmates, including the stabbing of a white inmate who lied about having a Ride sponsor, and a gang member who overheard a conversation about an assault on an inmate and tipped off the intended target. As the shot caller, he held ultimate authority over the white inmates. No one could be stabbed or beaten without his permission.
It was at Chino’s Sycamore Hall that Roberg first befriended Ziska. The inmate and the correctional officer soon became friends. Roberg said he grew to respect Ziska and even called off a hit on a Skinhead named Junior at Ziska’s request.
“Ziska asked us not to stab Junior,” he said. “He said Junior was his boy. Ziska asked me a favor because of the rapport we had. It was the least I could do for him. He did me favors.”
On another occasion, Ziska again asked Roberg to refrain from stabbing an inmate, because he feared that a knife attack would bring heat down on his unit. “We just beat him down,” said Roberg. “No one would be disciplined. It would be different if there was a stabbing.”
Roberg took Ziska’s words to heart one more time, in 1999, after a Skinhead named Nathan “Chance” Johnson allegedly raped his cellmate. Johnson denied the rape, but, as white prison policy dictated, he had to pass along his “paperwork,” or incident report, to his unit’s shot caller for review. After taking a look at the report, Roberg decided that there wasn’t enough evidence to call a hit on Johnson for violating one of the Ride's cardinal rules — the one against rape.
Roberg also told how Ziska had come to his cell and influenced his decision. “He gave me the incident report,” he testified in court. “Ziska said I needed to look at it. I said I didn’t believe the paperwork. I saw that something had happened. I figured that the dude just beat him up. Ziska was making such an issue about the incident. He was giving all the indications that the dude needed to be hit. To have a rapist socializing with NLR — that’s bad stuff as far as politics go. It was clear in my mind I was missing something in letting Johnson into the program. Ziska’s access to information was far greater than mine. It was a clear indication that I should look further into it.”
On July 24, 2000, Ziska got his way. Johnson was stabbed in the eye on the yard by Ride member Joseph “Sulky” Diamond.
Roberg wasn’t the only inmate with special privileges who came forward to testify against Ziska. “Bobbo” Wilson, a “Wood,” or Ride associate, became Ziska’s tier-tender, or helper, at Sycamore Hall in the mid-’90s. (Wilson also worked out a plea agreement with federal prosecutors.) One of their first orders of business together was the assault of an ex-Marine who was housed in their unit.
“We came to find out that he was there ?for breaking his baby’s arms,” said Wilson. ?“We were given the paperwork from Ziska. Whites aren’t supposed to hurt kids. This individual needed to be got because what he did was wrong.”
As a favor to Ziska, Wilson agreed to throw the inmate a beating, and Ziska obliged by opening the ex-Marine’s cell. On another occasion, Ziska opened a cell for Wilson when he found out that an inmate was in for raping a mentally challenged girl. “You don’t rape, period,” he said. “We are running the prison for whites, and we want to know who is coming in.”
Another inmate who received special favors was a violent Skinhead named James “Spinner” Abbott, who was in and out of custody for 15 years. Abbott, a so-called independent, was a good match for Ziska. The two would talk about German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche and Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf. “The white race is genetically superior,” he said from the witness stand. “Smarter. We invented almost everything. Ziska told me that he started out as a traditional Skin, but it seemed to me that he got more infatuated with the [Nazi Low Riders]. He liked the structure of them. He seemed to gravitate towards that.”
Ziska regularly taught Abbott martial arts, how to thwart a knife or pepper-spray attack, and gave him Plexiglas so he could make a weapon. “I was in that wicked way,” he said. “Ziska wanted us to be strapped in in case of a riot.”
Abbott also planned the beatings of an inmate who was “wagging his weenie” at two corrections officers, as well as a child molester, at the behest of Ziska. “When my homeboy was socking him up, Ziska walked down toward the guard shack, and when the old man screamed, he looked away like it was coming from another direction. It was funny. He didn’t go check to see if he was okay,” said Abbott, about the second beating.
But not everyone was buying the inmates’ stories.
“They are all cons,” said defense attorney Salzman. “They have major sentences. The government is arguing that the motive is racial. He might be a hard person, but he is not a racist. Someone would have picked this up. Other guards wouldn’t have tolerated this. Why would he do it? Why would he sacrifice his career for this purpose?”
Chino corrections officer Richard Allan Palacios Sr. worked the 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. shift with Ziska in the late 1990s. The two officers got on reasonably well. Palacios didn’t ask too many questions when he saw 15 to 30 white inmates out of their cells at one time, and Ziska provided no answers. Instead, Palacios would grab another officer, and the two would corral the inmates back into their cells. It was a regular ritual. It was usually followed by Ziska’s letting them back out. “We would confront inmates, and they said they got permission from Ziska,” he said. “They would be screaming out his name.”
Palacios eventually began to worry about his safety and brought his concerns to Ziska. “He told me I was being too hard on the white inmates,” he said. “He said to me, Do you know what it would be like to have battery acid on my vehicle? He told me to back off because they did favors for him when he wasn’t there.”
Palacios’ fears reached a high point after he saw Ziska show Ride member Michael “Snake” Bridge Polaroids of a fully clothed Palacios with a “baton in my rear end” as part of a prison hazing ritual.
“It undermined my authority and safety,” he said. Chino corrections officer Robert Walter Spejcher, who was assigned to the shift just after Ziska’s, complained that there were days when he started work and found cell doors unlocked — a violation of prison policy — and white inmates wandering the tiers.
“It presented a security risk,” he said. “They could jump out and attack us. Guards were scared they would get jumped.”
Spejcher said that he would find Nazi paraphernalia and an unusually large amount of weapons in white inmates’ cells.
“There were more acts of violence on the third watch due to inner-dorm visiting after Ziska’s watch,” he said. “I don’t need a job that is unsafe to work because of the number of incidents going on.”
Palacios eventually brought his concerns to his superiors, who told him to document Ziska’s bad behavior. Soon afterward, Palacios filed a written complaint to investigative services. After a six-month internal-affairs investigation, prison authorities found no evidence of wrongdoing and closed the file. For coming forward, Palacios said, he was shunned by his co-workers and given the silent treatment. He eventually transferred to another unit at Chino.
“I didn’t agree with the findings,” he said. “In my report was a list of dates and times and officers present. I had to go with what the department said.”
“The reason why it wasn’t sustained was because other officers wouldn’t back up his claim,” said federal prosecutor Adam Kamenstein.
It wouldn't have been the first time that an officer was shunned for violating what U.S. District Judge Thelton Henderson, in a Northern California case, described as a “code of silence” among officers. In 2004, Henderson ordered an investigation by special master John Hagar into the state’s labor contract, asking whether it gave the prison-guards union too much control over prison management and whether the contract hindered the state’s ability to conduct fair and accurate investigations of guard misconduct. What they found was a culture fostering a code of silence that was rampant in the department.
A prime example occurred in 2002, when two former Pelican Bay guards were sent to prison for soliciting inmates to attack child molesters, sex offenders and other inmates they disliked, and for attacking inmates themselves at the maximum-security facility in Crescent City. The trial of Sergeant Michael Powers and Officer Jose Garcia raised concerns that some guards attempted to protect their convicted colleagues, sparking the federal investigation that prompted Henderson to consider appointing a receiver to run the department.
“Rather than CDC [California Department of Corrections] staff correcting the prisoners, some correctional officers end up acquiring a prisoner’s mentality: They form gangs, align with gangs and spread the code of silence,” Hagar wrote. “The code of silence is taught to new recruits because of longstanding CDC culture, turning good officers bad.”
At Ziska’s trial, federal prosecutors accused numerous Chino corrections officers of adhering to that very same code of silence. Besides Palacios and Spejcher, all of the correctional officers who testified said that they hadn’t witnessed any wrongdoing on the part of Ziska, and most denied that a code of silence existed among correctional officers. “I don’t believe the code of silence exists,” said corrections officer Nathaneal Huley, who worked with Ziska in 1999. “If he was passing weapons, it would be a problem for me. Why would I want to keep that hushed? One of those weapons could end up in me.”
Prosecutors say Ziska’s only motivation was to help the white-power cause. Defense attorney Joel Levine says the case was largely a fabrication of inmates trying to help themselves. “There is no evidence that he received money or remuneration for these actions. It is a no-brainer to inform on a corrections officer and get benefits for themselves.”
Late in the day on February 14, after an emotional afternoon of testimony by Ziska’s son Ryan, Judge Hatter convicted Ziska of all but two counts. He criticized the Department of Corrections for failing to supervise Ziska and ordered Ziska to return to court on May 8, when he could be sentenced to as many as 50 years in federal prison.
“I am clearly of the mind that the California Department of Corrections ought to be indicted as well, if they could be,” Hatter said. “It’s amazing, frankly, that the offenses which are charged here are not more rampant throughout the entire system, and I am sure that there are offenses that are as grave as some of these and worse and hopefully will be brought to the attention of the public before long and will be addressed properly.”

I've done a lot of research through just about every California newspaper via web the last couple of days, and from the photos I've seen and the quotes i've read, many of the organizers of these walkouts on these campuses are actually the smarter, a's and b's students, and not the campus slackers, -NOR- any outside agitators.
These kids made a simple statement; That they felt it was MORALLY WRONG to make illegal immigration a crime punishable by prison. That was it. Those were the signs they made, mostly on campus. It was a concise, clear statement. It wasn't, 'fuck the man, fuck America..blah blah.' There were some tag-alongs out there on the street doing that too, obviously, and, just as obviously, the right wingers on both cable news and a.m. radio, were putting the spotlight on THEM and not the students who really organized the marches. They also panned in on the Mexican flags, ignoring the many students who actually brought AMERICAN FLAGS. It seemed to me that the right wingers were more desperate to make a red herring out of the marches than the left wingers were to take any actual part in them, afterall, the marches weren't over gay marriage or abortion...
I've got to give those kids big props for putting on a peaceful demonstration, and getting the attention of the entire country while doing so.

I was wondering how many here if any of you guys have ever done time?It is not fun being in those 6x9 cells day in day out for years, not days not months but years. I have been incarcerated with some hardcore pintos and it is not one of admiration or respect .These men are just human beings turned into animals by a system that has no idea on how to give offenders a different way of life. Factions were formed to protect each race so to give themselves some sort of feeling of security.Unfortunately some have perverted that idea and called it unidos or brothers or cuzz, blood etc.,.We also have people like some guys in this blog who glorify this perversion because they like the lifestyle but had no cora to take part.So they come in to information on sites such as this one to say they know someone who did time with so and so .They are the reasons that people are killed they are the reason that peoples life are changes for the worst ,but hell at least you can sleep at night. These guys are doing life terms they have no care in the world for anyone but themselves they are not commited to each other but to self.

BUT, when a criminal mind sets out to continue in a life of crime, there are results (consequences) involved which is supposed to deter this person + others in society against such criminal conduct.
Lost in all this mea culpa spin is the fate of a criminal's
victim(s). Have you, or a member of your family, been raped, robbed, killed and/or victimized by a criminal? If the answer is yes, then you don't have much love for the bad guy. If your answer is no, then please thank the Man upstairs because I don't want to be the one to tell you that until you've walked in the victim's shoes, you just can't imagine what it feels like to experience such a tragedy.

Some have committed misdemeanor crimes such as petty theft of a pair of reeboks, petty theft of two bottles of Jim Beam, possesion of a "rat ass dime" of heroin and another guy I met in Centinela who got 25 with an L for, ready for this, attempted possesion of heroin. So por favor miss me with all that these guys deserve to be there because of continued criminal behavior, its more like continued drug addiction, but because of these outrageous laws e.g. "3 strikes your out" they are put in these places with hardcore violent criminals who, and I'll say it, deserve to live in 6 by 9 cells, and once there you have to roll with the program. You either become predator or prey. Alot but not all would have been better in being sent to drug treatment programs where some might have learned to become productive members of society if given that chance. I for one was given that opportunity (after going through that revolving door for some 25 years) by a parole officer who saw me as an addict before she saw me as a violent hard core criminal undeserving of spending the rest of my life in a 6 by 9 cell.

The people who were pissed off at the kids who walked out of school last week will be NO LESS pissed off at the protesters in Costa Mesa, American flags and 'sugar' for the 'bees' not withstanding.

The NF doesn't have what they would consider a single leader. They have what the used to call La Mesa which is somewhat like their governing body where the 4 or 5 generals vote. James "Tibbs" Morado,Joseph "Pinky" Hernandez, Gerald "Cuete" Rubalcaba, Cornelio Tristan and Tex Marin Hernandez are believed to be the top generals and/or La Mesa memebers. I'm pretty sure a couple on that list aren't on Le Mesa but are pretty high up on the NF food chain.
After this last indictment, they all got moved out of Pelican Bay and got sent off to Florence Fed in Colorado.
The Governator original plan was to ship them to different feds around the U.S., his idea of divide and conquer. So he's not too happy seeing all the generals in the same prison, just a different state.
Now that they are all in Florence they are afraid that the NF will actively recruit outside of Northern California and they are already starting to see a Nortenos around colorado, montana and idaho.

The transfer of five Nuestra Familia generals and captains to federal prison last month caused a dramatic shift in the gang's leadership, but police say little has changed on Monterey County streets.
The shift at the top hasn't stopped the "organized work of the Nuestra Familia" in the area, said Salinas police Lt. Manny Perrien.
"The people on the streets, the soldiers, are still taking care of business," he said.
The gang continues to have a role in organized robberies and the drug trade, controlling heroin sales in areas such as Chinatown in Salinas.
"Those things are pretty firm regardless of the top. Whether the general is in Colorado or Northern California, the day-to-day operation is still happening," Perrien said.
But at higher levels, there is evidence of strife as the gang splits into two divisions -- state and federal.
The transfer of the leaders, said Devan Hawkes, a gang investigator at Pelican Bay prison, has already sown confusion among Nuestra Familia members. New California leadership has emerged at the prison, but Hawkes said members on the streets are unsure whether they should take orders from the old leaders in federal custody or a new general in Pelican Bay. Leadership "conflicts" have developed in Salinas, San Jose and San Francisco.
"There is currently an investigation by the (Nuestra Familia) into loyalties in Salinas and within other prisons," Hawkes said.
Today, David "DC" Cervantes of Chino is the sole general at the head of the Nuestra Familia in Pelican Bay, Hawkes said. Cervantes has taken charge of Monterey County operations.
Another general, James "Conejo" Perez, has been demoted, though investigators are not sure why.
Four captains have been placed in charge of various regions, investigators said: Antonio "Chuco" Guillen, 39, from San Jose, said to be responsible for NF operations in Santa Clara County; George "Puppet" Franco, 39, from San Jose, responsible for Stockton, Tracy and Fresno; Jose Armando "Huero" Gonzalez, a longtime captain, and Shawn "Bubbles" Cameron, 29, of Hanford.
Though the transfer from one supermax prison to another may have only shifted the problem out of state, Hawkes said the move was still worthwhile.
"How they address the Nuestra Familia in the federal prisons, I don't know, but with them gone, it really gave us the opportunity to step up our efforts," Hawkes said. "They had to reorganize and restructure."
More important, he said, communication between Pelican Bay and the street has been hindered.
"Communication is their biggest problem right now, and a lot of what they're communicating is not getting where they want it."

Sacra is not exactly a bustling, violent, city. But, then again, neither are places like Tracy, Stocktone or Modesto, which seem to be NF hotbeds.

As fas as I know, which isn't much, since I've been out of the game so long, ;o) Is that they don't openly tax all varrios like La Eme does. They will tax certain drug dealers and homies will come by certain neighborhoods to make sure work is being done, but mostly they do larger drug deals as opposed to a percentge of every nickle bag that gets sold.
Nortenos are much more loosely affilated than Surenos are since geographically they can be far from one another. However,Familianos (full blown NF Members) are much more structured and are quite elaborate in their criminal dealings. Just look at the production of the Generation of United Nortenos, GUN, Cd.) But just like Surenos on the street theres always up and comers who want to earn the stripes on the streets.
I just recently had a childhood homeboy of mine get out after 10 years and he is definitly Structure if not close to being a familiano.
From what I understand they really are picky with who they make a familiano. Northern Raza bascially equates to what I know it to be called at Northern Structure. More than 20 years ago, I was listening to the usual drag from old guys with low "A" numbers. One former NF (S)said that he was around during the CDC shoe-story. His account was that the Mexican inmate population was growing at a rate in numbers, organization and power that made CDC uncomfortable. Very. In the 50's, race problems...were just that. A problem, yet very real and was set firm on the outside where administrators and politicians enjoyed their easy lives, in a racially divided world.
According to "S", the CDC started the split in the mexican inmate populations...between North and South. By, feeding the idea of life style differances and the behavior differances between the city dwellers and farm workers, CDC started a "Class" prejudice between the up-rising and growing Mexican inmate populations.
"S" said the shoe-sory was pretty much as we know it today. Except, CDC fueled the fire..allowing confrontations to spread. Keeping the enemy fighting with in itself...in-fighting, divisions and seperations...always wins.

I was watching 60 minutes last Sunday and I saw these miserable "success driven" people who work 18 hrs a day and have two cell phones and a blackberry and computor on for biz all the time.
I thought about my own life and how even as a kid of 7 or 8 I was hustling a buck, shining shoes, selling newspapers on the street, stealing, scamming, robbing,etc; then going straight and still hustling, scamming, conning, working my ass off. My rationale was always that I was doing it for survival, for my family, for pride, for self fullfilment,and on and on.
Now my kids and grandchildren are grown and self sufficient and I still hustle and scuffle, but now I tell myself that it's because I won't ever let the motherfuckers get over on me and humiliate me as a lazy Mexican. Fuck I'm just as bad as the Yuppies with two cell phones!
Couple of weeks ago I heard a taped recording of "Henry Miller" who wrote "Tropic of Cancer", brilliant writer, world renowned.
He was dying and was asked by the reporter what he thought about his contribution to humanity was and the importance of his works.
I was shocked when he answered that it was all bullshit and that if he had to do it over again he would live life like his Mexican workers who suffered and worked like dogs for thier families and children. He observed them and was impressed by how content and happy they were when enjoying thier kids and grandchildren and the respect they got for all the hard self sacrifice.
I also got to revisit and watch the classic movie "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" with "Humphrey Bogart" and "John Huston". In the movie (which I highly recommend) these guys are broke, starving in Mexico and through strange circumstance become gold prospectors, but when they strike it rich, and should be content and satisfied, they instead become greedy and murderous.
Some end up dead, and they lose all the gold, but the old man "John Huston" who helps some sick kid out of the goodness of his heart, finds lifes real wealth with the respect and love of the poor Mexicans who worship him for his humanity.

Do'nt get me wrong I'm not denigrating the territory. I worked for a spell in Oak. at a glass shop off Broadway downtown. Bottom man got to do all the replacement jobs out on the Avenues, Bancroft, etc. Drove what we called "the ghetto truck". Invariably I'd only load what specific glass I needed for the job because if I left one sheet on the racks the lil monkey's would smash it before I could draw a bead on em..
