TWO YEARS IN THE SHU AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY T-SHIRT.
If there's any doubt that the gangster mindset has become a bankable commodity, you don't need to look any further than the record business and the clothing industry. I won't mention the name, but there's a clothing line based in the greater LA area that markets what they call "authentic jailhouse street wear." The T-shirts, jackets and hats sport the label's logo in addition to things like "186.22" (the California Penal Code section that covers gang membership), "LA County Jail 1750" (the High Power Module) and "P-Bay SHU" (Pelican Bay's Security Housing Unit).

While I fully understand the concept of wearing something ironically and the idea of reverse cool (hip young mothers, for instance, dressing like Doris Day and Lucille Ball) there doesn't seem to be any ironic content in this clothing line. It appears to be a flat out glorification of jail life and gangsterism. I don't know who's buying this stuff, but I can almost guarantee that nobody who's been in the SHU or the high power module would wear a T-shirt to fondly commemorate the event.

I would bet that this clothing is aimed at the wannabe fringe, young people who probably haven't got a clue what prison life is really like. And frankly, it's a bad message.

Unfortunately, this bad message isn't restricted to wannabe gangsters. Some gang cop groups are also marketing clothing that looks an awful lot like classic gang wear. These guys should know better. When the good guys and the bad guys start looking the same, it's time to re-examine your premise and figure out who you really are.

Thanks for the inspiring "big night on the town" Mr. Quixote!
Dr. Bix called me yesterday with the analysis of my blood work last week, and Bix said
"Sir, we found blood in your alcohol stream."
Yesterday I seen a wino sitting on a milk crate holding a sign that read "NEED CASH FOR ALCOHOL REASEARCH".... theres the ENTREPRENEURIAL spirit!

Wally,

You have already talked about how the gang culture has become part main stream latino culture in Los Angeles. So does it surprise you to find someone selling prison clothes? Where do you think the baggy clothes (gangster) style of dress came from?

We have video games such as Grand Theft Auto – San Andreas which are glamorizing criminal and gang life style. This is a very popular video game for kids.
http://www.rockstargames.com/sanandreas/
http://www.gta-sanandreas.com/

You have companies selling cholo dolls and cholo tee-shirts.
http://www.toyexperts.com/en/item/index.cfm?MC=13&C=158&SC=115&ic=558

You have cholos selling their gangster rap music.
http://www.hipowerhookup.com/index.html

We had people putting up MySpace pages of latino kids who were glamorizing and are proud of their gang culture. I believe the point of this was to show us how many young latino kids are embracing the cholo lifestyle.

But many old cholos will probably tell you all this is normal behavior for L.A. latino kids. I like the words of a previous post who was talking smack about blacks, the quote
“If you American Blacks would get your culture straigten out, you wouldn't be crying on racial issues or pointing fingers - but trying to educate those that need change in conduct and mentality.”

Well the Mexicans of Los Angeles also need to change the conduct and mentality of their cholo kids.

But since the Don Imus comment, I have seen more people, mainly the black ministers talking about the negative effects of some rap music.

Wally your creative juices are showing, better put on a trenchcoat!
"two years in the SHU and all I got was this lousy T shirt"

Could be a chapter title for a story, or poem.
Sort of like Brando says in "On the Waterfront",

"Charlie, you shoudda taken better care of me, your my own brother.
I could have beaten Doyle blindfolded, but I gotta take a dive for the short money, and he gets a shot at the title in a stadium.
I could have been a contender Charlie, I could have been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am."

Might be a harbinger of the end of what is left of civilization.
Wannabe's wearing joint rags is bad enough, but when the cops start acting, dressing, and talking like gangsters then something is way out of wack!
I seen it coming though, and it's also very prevalent with the Correctional officers in the Calif pinta's and has been for a long time.
Many (not all!) talk to each other like their ganged up, and use street terms and con talk to cover thier weakness and insecurities. It's a very pathetic situation that probably needs someone in authority to stomp on quickly, if possible at this juncture.
Psychotic situation when the "Big Homies" dress like businessmen and dectectives and the Jura dress like the gangster peewee's.

By the way, I like the LA schools dress code making students wear certain colors, it avoids the bullshit where an innocent kid gets fucked up over some color of clothing he wears.
But I gotta wonder when I'm passing Burbank Jr. High and see all the kids wearing "Dodger Blue".
I never see any school kids wearing red on the LA Eastside, must have been a lot of thought put into those decisions.

Whats next Wally.... a Judges line?

When two hep cats walkin down the street in Judges attire pass sitting sidewalk cafe patrons dressed in "gang clothing" what happens? Is there protocal? Do they all rise? Does a bailiff come out of the woodwork? The world is "mad stupid," if I can borrow that stupid line.

Don Culo made a point about uniforms i'd like to add on. Back when I was a kid, the only kids who wore uniforms were the rich kids from private schools. Most weren't really rich, but to my household who couldnt afford to send us to public school, they were. Anyhow, the other day I'm dropping my kid off at school and had an epiphany. Said school doesn't have uniforms and most (95%)kids there have parents who graduated college. They don't wear uniforms and have gardens all over etc etc. then I drive through the hood and all the kids are wearing uniforms, the school is surrounded by fences and there are yard duties on every coner of the yard. It reminded me of CYA. So here is this school in a fucked up neighboorhood resembling a prison and here is this other school (both public) in a good neighboorhood letting kids be kids. Somehow, and I hope I don't sound like SNS, but the epiphany was that these elementary school kids at these fucked up schools that looked like prisons, would have an easy time transitioning from this to a prison setting. I won't so far as calling it conditioning, but at that moment I thought i seen the future...then I called up my homie for more wacky tobacky

Damn I remember back in the days when you had to fold up your state jacket and keep it under your mattress for your whole soleta (incarceration time) so it would fit into a manila envelope, and even then you could pick up a new beef (petty theft) on your way out. The state boots were always good to have on the streets for working, or kicking some culo (ass). Then after you got strung out you could always sell either to one of the lil homies for about twenty dollars. I still got my old state shoes in the closet, but now they got a leather sole and are dyed black, nice lookin pair of kicks.
I got pulled over in South Gate awhile back ago by a regular patrol officer, he wouldnt tell me what the reason for the stop was, he just kept saying I'll tell you in awhile. He asked if he could search my vehicle, I told him to "be my guest" and again asked "why did you pull me over" he still would not tell me. After about 5 minutes aother officer pulled up in an unmarked cruiser, now heres the trippy part This placa (cop) young, chicano, moustache, you know the description. Well he had a thermo on with the sleeves partially rolled up and his arms were "sleeved" full of tattoos, his visible tintiasos (tattoos) were all done with no colors so they looked like he got them in the pinta (prison), he asked me where I was from when I told him he said something like "orale, thats an OG barrio" after they ran a make on me and found that I was just passing through there city on the way home from work the tattooed placa told me I could leave, but before he let me go he gave me a warning that went, to the best of my recollection something like this "hey ese you got to be trucha cause the homies are going at it with the tintos right now, and you know them mayates dont give a fuck, the other day they shot a homie who was with his familia, so be careful"
I drove off shaking my head wondering if that just happened or was it a PCP flashback, I aint fixed, drank, or smoked, in eight years, that shit was real.

That's the first time Ive ever heard about a racial fight in South Gate. You can count the black families in South Gate. I think I've known about 85% of them for the last 25-30 years. ???????? Question mark on that one...
Back in the days, Blacks and the eses from La Uva would always join forces and beat down some florencias in the middle of Firestone Blvd....it was a great sight to watch at 3pm in the afternoon, I would even try to sell some tickets....but aside from that...you details are kinda off. Now your perception on South Gate PD is correct. It seems that eveyone gets away with murder and dope sells in that city. What ever happened to being a smart entrepreneur? The vato who started that company is just trying to make some feria, what's so wrong about that? That one company that made the GTA video game series is British and do you think that they invested and designed their product to not make them money? Chale, these vatos added more gangstyle violence just to sell more copies of their games. Many might not like their product and they have the choice of buying or not buying it. Same for that one vatos clothing line. The market will determine what products are successful and which ones are not. Like George Lopez said " If you don't like it don't look at it." Or in this case, if you don't like it don't buy it.

As for the good guys trying to look like the bad guys well that has been going on for a long time now. Maybe it is too late to change it, and maybe not. But I've noticed that the ones that get into this style are only the ones that have contact with gangsters. COs, Sheriff deputies in the county and gang cops are the ones that I have seen as "fitting the profile". Others get tattoos tambien, but the ones that I mentioned get sleeved down.

Like DQ said "Psychotic situation when the "Big Homies" dress like businessmen and dectectives and the Jura dress like the gangster peewee's." This might sound crazy to some but I for one know how true this really is. Very well put DQ.

I agree with Wally about police and gangsters becoming too much like each other, but jesus christ, what boat did you just get off of, Wally? Remember the tatoos in CRASH? Wasn't there a special one if you killed a gang banger? I get the concept, but considering the analogy Wally drew, cops getting tats to describe how bad they fucked up a homeboy is a far cry from Sgt. Joe Friday. In Oakland, for well over a decade now, you've had "The riders". And, now, you're seeing the trend reach the fashion industry. I've noticed this a few months ago. Go to any conservative news website and you're certain to find at least one advertisement for a company that sells clothing to cops with all kinds of obnoxious ensigns that include the same types of slogans that gang members might use. Mind you, some of these are designed for cops to wear ON THE JOB. You see some of the guys posing in these clothes and even though I'm sure their just weight lifter/ models for hire, they look like Aryan Brotherhood members with their bald heads and goat tees. Younger police seem to certainly be adopting the 'gangsta style'.

My take is this; It's up to the people. The police work for us, and if the majority of the people decide they don't want police to co-opt with some sort of mock gangster fashion, they'll speak up about it. In the meantime, it's fair game. I've said several times that outside of civil injunctions, there is no law against being a member of a gang, more specifically, being in a gang neighborhood, and wearing gang colors, and even having tatoos. If I'm to point that out, then I have to be fair and say that as long as the public deems it legal, police can call themselves whatever they want and special units can wear whatever type of bad ass, gangsta clothing they want. I'm concerned with violence and people given too harsh of prison sentences for merely possessing drugs, not articles of clothing. It's not the '50s anymore, and both the movie and t.v. remakes of Dragnet sucked.

Well I guess you just can’t please the Mexicans, first you complain about the LAPD because they are mostly white, racist and do not understand the Mexican culture now you complain because the cops are Mexican and act like gang-banging cholos. The Hollenbeck resident was complaining a while back because the cops in his area shave their heads and act like gangsters. So do you want White/Anglo cops who do not relate to you Mexicans/Cholos, or do you want Mexican cops who are just like you and can relate to you? I guess you just can’t please you guys.

And if we tell you about the drug cartels owning many business in Southern California and corrupting small towns we are racist and anti-immigration. We let lots of illegal Mexicans into this country and they are involved in the politics of small cities like Cudahy and Maywood and they run them just like Tijuana, Mexico. If you want corrupt cops, corrupt politicians and drug cartels just let the Mexicans run the town. So why are you guys complaining you are getting what you asked for.

Like a previous comment said Welcome to Tijuana, Mexico; now shut up and eat your carne asada tacos and drink your Tecate and let the corruption games begin. Don’t forget to pay the mexican cop directly for your traffic ticket that is a new service they call the “mordida”.

I think you mistaken wealth, and the amenities that go along with it, with the delusion of being corruption free.

Considering corrupted cops and politicians, Mexico is only modeling itself after the best, the United States.

And when you consider America's dealing with drug lords in exchange for allies in places like Central America, and god knows where else, you get the picture as to how higher we are on the pecking order of morality than the cartels, and, all sarcasm aside, how much higher we are on the pecking order of the illegal drug trade itself.

Somebody posted a story a few weeks ago about how fewer Mexicans are coming to the U.S., well here is the real story, The Mexicans are coming by the millions.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/laplaza/

Mexico leads in migrations
A World Bank report released Sunday shows that Mexico sends more migrants abroad than any other country on earth exceeding even the flows from nations that are much bigger, much poorer or convulsed by war and famine.

Two million Mexicans left their homeland between 2000 and 2005, according to the study, most of them to seek employment in the United States. China, whose population is more than 12 times larger than that of Mexico, saw 1.95 million of its citizens leave the country. More than 1.8 million Pakistanis left their homeland. Neighboring India produced 1.4 million migrants.

Economic migrants dwarfed the flows of refugees. For example, just over a half-million residents of Sudan fled that war-torn nation between 2000 and 2005, according to data from the World Bank's report, World Development Indicators 2007.

The northward flow of Mexicans to the United States is one of the largest exoduses in modern history. The equivalent of 10% of Mexico's population of 107 million people now resides north of the border, according to estimates.

Mayor Villaraigosa gave his state of the city speech today. And of course he talked about gangs. And a few gang crime statistics from last year; 1500 people were shot and 272 were killed last year by gangs. Thank god the Mexican gang-bangers do many of their drive-by shootings from a fast moving car while drunk or high. Los Angels has the lowest number of cops for any big city in the United States.

Los Angeles is the gang capital of the country (thank you Mexicans), more than 400 gangs in Los Angeles. Mayor V. also talked about street gang being controlled by felons in prisons and needing to change this.

He also slapped Mr. Bush; “ it is time to put more of our focus/money in Los Angeles not in Iraq”. He is asking governor and state legislators for more money for gang intervention programs.

He wants to create eight gang reduction zones and add police and social services for gang hot zones. He mentioned Home-Boy Industries (Father Boyle) as a good model for gang reduction programs, no mention of CIS (cholos/criminals in Schools). Nothing stops a bullet like a job.

And also wants more gun controls on cheap guns.

He also talked about his defeat on the takeover of schools (LAUSD), but he said; he is in the school reform business to stay. Wants to create more after schools programs, safe passage to and from schools, and also mentioned that there are too many gangs in schools.

Also talked about the struggles of his own mother in raising his family, you do not have to be in gangs because you are poor. And that more people need to take personal responsibility for the gang problems of Los Angeles.

Read this:

http://www.laweekly.com/news/news/friends-in-low-places/16132/s/

You know that this is bullshit. Back a couple of years ago, I parked in a private apartment building with no signs stating that your vehicle would be towed if parked along side a red curb. My car was taking up about 4 feet of red painted curb and got towed.
I thought someone stole my car, so I called Bell Gardens' PD and wanted a stolen police report incident. Bell Gardens' PD said, "oh, there is nothing you can do, they towed your car and we were advised". End of story.
They gave me the name and address of the towing company....you guessed it "United Motor Club" in South Gate. You know, I really thought of coming back and burning that tow yard up. I am not lying or joking. First time Ive been so pissed off since cracking a vato's head with a bat in 1985, I was going to do a good mafia style arson felony. I had it all planned out too, nice and accidental. I even had film footage of all the establishment's cameras that are shooting out protecting the entire tow yard....shit, i'm good.
My Car got towed, I lost a day of work, and paid the price - close to $300.00. I cared less about the money, the day of work is what killed me. I had to be at a meeting at 8am.
Now, I read there is new laws against doing this type of illegal towing. I heard some company down in Orange Co was caught doing this type of towing and the company employees all got arrested. Why has there not been arrests made to United Motor Club Employees? It is because they are hooked up with Bell Gardens PD - Maywood PD, Bell Garden's Beltran, who is hooked up with Solis from la puente, and verdugo from Ibiza, and Pedroza from Lynwood, and Cudahy City manager Perez and the list is endless....
Now if someone here has some good Cheese, answer my question. Does South Gate PD use the same towing company? All I want is a simple yes or no answer. If its a yes, then SOuth Gate PD should be investigated for using Untied Motor Club on Firestone and who is the politician that allowed this. Talk about the worst corruption ever, CHE CHE CHrist.!

Two pot-farms seized in San Bernardino
By Anna Gorman, Times Staff Writer
2:54 PM PDT, April 18, 2007

Sheriff's deputies discovered two indoor marijuana growing operations early today at houses in San Bernardino County.

Two men were detained after deputies executed search warrants at the homes on Buckthorne and Atsina roads in the hamlet of Phelan, about 15 miles southwest of Victorville. One of the men was found hiding in an attic.

The two operations are believed to be connected and are the latest in a string of pot-farm busts in Southern California, said Jodi Miller, a Sheriff's Department spokeswoman.

"Everybody seems to be finding these indoor grows," Miller said.

Deputies found more than $1 million worth of marijuana at the Buckthorne house and about $280,000 worth at the Atsina house. The marijuana at both houses was being grown with special techniques that use indoor lights and nutrient-filled liquids, officials said.

The Sheriff's Department urged members of the public to notify authorities if they see any suspicious activity that could signal an indoor marijuana operation, including covered windows, a garage door that never opens or an air conditioner that stays on constantly.

The bust comes on the heels of the discovery of more than a dozen pot houses in and around the San Gabriel Valley in the past month. Los Angeles County sheriff's investigators believe there are many more indoor marijuana farms in that area and are asking for the public to be more vigilant about spotting the homes.

After thinking about it....I really don't think any of the major characters like Sil,Walnuts,Chris will die...I think they will all make it to the end....The reason is because I've been hearing a lot of talk about a movie, and from a business point of view, these characters are too important....Just my take...
Pass the nuts please.

Ok...and I hate to look at it this way... but,the reality of it is that The Sopranos is a big cash cow business for Chase and HBO... They have multi-millions of dollars on the line in re-runs....I'm talking about life changing money....
There will be millions of dollars involved in the decision if Tony dies or not......If the star of a major TV show dies it crushes the revenue generated thru re-runs....The fact is that people just lose interest in the show when the main character dies.....and of course no chance of Tony in a movie...which will coast millions should a movie happen....I know Jimmy.G has said he has no interest in doing Tony Soprano(mob)characters ever again once the show ends....but....Ray Liotta passed on the Sopranos because he didn't want to do TV because he was to busy being a movie star....Well....several years later Liotta did a shity show on network TV called Smith that bombed....so things have a way of changing....I think for Biz reasons....These main characters will live......

some of us used talk about how cool we'd look in our state issue clothes when we paroled as soon as we arrived. I recall conversations with vatos about how they would be walking down the street with their state issue coats and everyone would know you was a bad mutha. Some of these cats were 2 months into 5-9 years sentences and already they were thinking about how they'd wear prison clothes once released. Maybe I lost my eye for it, but come to think of it, I haven't seen anyone wearing prison clothes on the streets in a while. One vato used to get visits from his jefito who also wore his pinta clothes to visits until the institution put a stop to it for seciruty purposes. Is that crazy?>? why would a father wear clothes he got in prison to visit his son in YA. Poor vato never stood a chance at a decent life with an upbringing like that.

You are correct about this blog being about Los Angeles and L.A. gangs and I also think it is becoming a Sopranos show blog. Will Tony get whacked will Christopher get whacked I think Paulie is going to be next.

As long as 25% of prisoners in California jails are illegal immigrants then talking about illegal immigrants is a relevant topic. I like my kool-aid with Hennessey Cognac just like the mayates, and I am not going anywhere. So if you get offended close your eyes or read another blog.

And to the guy who was complaining about the towing company in Bell-Gardens, you know tow truck drivers are some of the most hated people around. I have seen cars towed from private parking lots in just 5 minutes even though the signs posted allow 30 minute parking. If you watch the news you would see many investigative reports about sneaky tow companies in Southern California. California just passed new regulations for tow companies. We all have a own personal experience with these sneaky thieves.

PLATINUM SELLING RAPPER TELLS '60 MINUTES': WOULDN'T HELP POLICE CATCH EVEN A SERIAL KILLER BECAUSE IT WOULD HURT HIS BUSINESS AND VIOLATE HIS 'CODE OF ETHICS'
Thu Apr 19 2007 12:47:1 ET

Rap star Cam'ron says there's no situation -- including a serial killer living next door -- that would cause him to help police in any way, because to do so would hurt his music sales and violate his "code of ethics." Cam'ron, whose real name is Cameron Giles, talks to Anderson Cooper for a report on how the hip-hop culture's message to shun the police has undermined efforts to solve murders across the country. Cooper's report will be broadcast on 60 MINUTES Sunday, April 22 (7:00-8:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

"If I knew the serial killer was living next door to me?" Giles responds to a hypothetical question posed by Cooper. "I wouldn't call and tell anybody on him -- but I'd probably move," says Giles. "But I'm not going to call and be like, ÔThe serial killer's in 4E.' " ( For an excerpt of Giles' interview, click here

Giles' "code of ethics" also extends to crimes committed against him. After being shot and wounded by gunmen, Giles refused to cooperate with police. Why? "Because...it would definitely hurt my business, and the way I was raised, I just don't do that," says Giles. Pressed by Cooper, who says had he been the victim, he would want his attacker to be caught, Giles explains further: "But then again, you're not going to be on the stage tonight in the middle of, say, Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, with people with gold and platinum teeth and dreadlocks jumping up and down singing your songs, either," says Giles. "We're in two different lines of business."

"So for you, it's really about business?" Cooper asks.

"It's about business," Giles says, "but it's still also a code of ethics."

Rappers appear to be concerned about damaging what's known as their "street credibility," says Geoffrey Canada, an anti-violence advocate and educator from New York City's Harlem neighborhood. "It's one of those things that sells music and no one really quite understands why," says Canada. Their fans look up to artists if they come from the "meanest streets of the urban ghetto," he tells Cooper. For that reason, Canada says, they do not cooperate with the police.

Canada says in the poor New York City neighborhood he grew up in, only the criminals didn't talk to the police, but within today's hip-hop culture, that's changed. "It is now a cultural norm that is being preached in poor communities....It's like you can't be a black person if you have a set of values that say ÔI will not watch a crime happen in my community without getting involved to stop it,'" Canada tells Cooper.

Young people from some of New York's toughest neighborhoods echo Canada's assessment, calling the message not to help police "the rules" and helping the police "a crime" in their neighborhoods. These "rules" are contributing to a much lower percentage of arrests in homicide cases -- a statistic known as the "clearance rate" -- in largely poor, minority neighborhoods throughout the country, according to Prof. David Kennedy of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. "I work in communities where the clearance rate for homicides has gone into the single digits," says Kennedy. The national rate for homicide clearance is 60 percent. "In these neighborhoods, we are on the verge of -- or maybe we have already lost -- the rule of law," he tells Cooper.

Says Canada, "It's like we're saying to the criminals, ÔYou can have our community....Do anything you want and we will either deal with it ourselves or we'll simply ignore it.' "

Funny and interesting article in the LA Times.
It may be that with Mexico's life expectancy rate almost as high as ours, and the birthrate almost as low as ours, things are about to change drastically.
Who knows? In a few years there could be hundreds of Gringo's looking for work in front of the Home Depot in Tijuana or Mexicali.

We could use the Border Patrol and the fat assed Minutemen and other anti immigrant watchdog groups to man the Canadian border to prevent the Mexicans from leaving.
dq

{"Will we have enough workers?
In the near future, the U.S. may be begging people to cross the border.
By Shannon O'Neil, SHANNON O'NEIL, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, teaches in the political science department at Columbia University and is working on a book about Mexico-U.S. relations.
April 5, 2007

AS MANY IN Congress, in the media and in homes across the country debate the best way to stem the flow of undocumented workers across the Rio Grande, they don't seem to be aware that this perceived problem is becoming increasingly irrelevant. In fact, the immigration concern of the future could well be how to entice Mexicans and other Latin Americans to cross into the U.S. in the numbers we need.

Mexico is undergoing a demographic transition. According to the Mexican census bureau, long gone are the days of families with six, seven or 10 kids. Instead, Mexican women now average 2.2 births — only slightly above the average 2.1 births that occur in the United States and that are considered the "replacement rate," the level needed to maintain a stable population over time. Life expectancy in Mexico has increased to 75 years, compared to 77 in the United States. With fewer births and longer lives, by 2050, Mexico will become as old as the United States. In short, Mexico is about to age dramatically.

In the last 10 years, nearly 5 million Mexicans have come to the U.S. They've done many jobs, especially agricultural and construction work, keeping our food prices low and enabling the recent housing boom. The "pull" of plentiful U.S. jobs and higher salaries has been an important factor in this migration, but so has the "push" of Mexico's fast-growing, economically-active population, combined with weak job creation.

This situation is about to change. Job growth is a key component of President Felipe Calderon's agenda in Mexico. But even without faster job creation there, migration pressure — the "push" — will ease. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the economically-active population — which grew by more than 1 million new members each year during the 1990s — now adds just 500,000 annually. Over the next 10 years that means about 5 million fewer new workers compared to the previous decade — a number that's roughly equal to the population of undocumented Mexican immigrants in the United States. This suggests that demography may accomplish what border enforcement has not. In the next decade, the tide of northbound Mexican labor will likely recede.}"

Los Angeles Police Department - Police Need Help to Solve Murder

Los Angeles: Los Angeles detectives have released the photograph of a recent murder victim in the hopes it will jar someone's recollection of the March 29 shooting of Miguel Macias.

Macias was 21 years old when he was shot on a Hollywood sidewalk, near Santa Monica Boulevard and Beachwood Drive. His body was found around 4:00 A.M., dressed in a white polo shirt and blue Levi's pants.

"We're not sure why Miguel was in the Hollywood area that morning," said LAPD spokesman Lieutenant Paul Vernon. "Miguel worked at the Seven-Forty Club and his family lived in Cudahy, so there are a number of locales where someone might have some information that will help."

Miguel Macias had worked for eight months as a busboy at the popular Seven-Forty Club in downtown Los Angeles. He traveled by public bus.

"Detectives think Miguel was waiting for a bus when his assailant killed him," Vernon added. "We have no information that he resided in the Hollywood area, so we're not sure why he was here."

Gangstas occupy the spatial center in the college classroom of crime more often than marginals, who more often occupy the spatial peripheries of the CDC. The greater the marginality of a peep, the higher the likelihood that the wannabe will sit on the periphery. Affordable housing as endangered species in L.A.
The tenants coalition is asking the mayor to help preserve the 100 buildings that they say are in danger of being replaced by higher-priced units.
By Charles Proctor, Times Staff Writer
April 20, 2007

First came the hints that Veronica Rincon's landlady would drop when she collected rent. Had Rincon found a new place to live yet? Because the machines were coming in a couple of months to destroy her home.

Rincon, 35, was worried. The house she shares with her husband and three young daughters in the El Sereno neighborhood of Los Angeles might be cramped and a bit rundown. But it is all they could afford. And her landlady was talking about leveling it to make way for new development.

Then in March came the sledgehammer: a notice giving the family until mid-July to leave.

Rincon was at a loss. Rent at nearby apartments was double, sometimes triple, what the family paid. What could she do? "I don't know," she mumbled in Spanish.

Rincon's plight reflects a dearth of affordable housing in Los Angeles, activists say. On Thursday, a coalition of affordable housing advocates released a list of 100 buildings in the area — Rincon's among them — that they say are in danger of being replaced by condominiums or new apartments far beyond the reach of low- and middle-income residents.

The tenants coalition is asking Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to preserve the buildings on the list. It also is asking the City Council to require developers to include affordable housing in all new residential buildings and to pass a moratorium on conversions of apartments and residential hotels to condos.

The coalition plans a march to City Hall on Wednesday to highlight its demands.

Property owners and developers, however, say they have the right to realize a profit from their investments and warn that city restrictions could discourage people from going into the rental business, thus worsening the housing crunch.

The City Council recently doubled and tripled the relocation fees that developers must pay to tenants who are evicted when their units are converted into condos.

But housing advocates say that measure isn't enough, especially as rents continue to rise. The average monthly rent in the area climbed 1.5% in the first quarter of 2007, to $1,588, according to RealFacts, a Novato, Calif., company that tracks rents in 15 Western states.

About 12,000 apartments in the city have been razed or converted to condos since 2001, and many have been replaced with high-priced units, activists said.

"We can't afford to live in them," Alvivon Hurd, chairwoman of the housing commission for the Assn. of Community Organizations for Reform Now in Los Angeles, said in a morning press conference. "But we have to come here to keep them clean, to do their yards, to wash their floors."

Organizers held the news conference in front of a two-story apartment on Bixel Street that tenants said was in danger of being destroyed.

Two doors down, construction workers scrambled up wooden scaffolding — the beginnings of a new higher-priced apartment complex.

Some of the 40 or so people in attendance held up notices of eviction from their landlords. Tenants and coalition leaders pledged in English and Spanish to mobilize to hold city officials accountable. "We're on the move," Hurd said to cheers from onlookers.

It's a movement that Rincon hopes has not come too late. For eight years, her family has lived in the one-bedroom house off North Eastern Avenue. Its $545-a-month rent is affordable on the roughly $3,000 her construction-worker husband earns each month.

Rincon appreciates the neighborhood's proximity to Farmdale Elementary School — about a block away — and it's quiet. There are no gangs and no gunshots.

If she has to leave, Rincon said through a translator, she wants to find an apartment nearby. She has asked around to see whether anyone knows of a place that costs about the same.

"It seems," she said, "pretty much impossible."

I read the L.A. article posted by anonymous and noticed the following statement
“Organizers held the news conference in front of a two-story apartment on Bixel Street that tenants said was in danger of being destroyed. Two doors down, construction workers scrambled up wooden scaffolding — the beginnings of a new higher-priced apartment complex.”

Bixel Street is currently a street which is controlled by Diamond street gang members, I have seen cholos selling drugs and tagging quite a bit on Bixel street. I drove by the area and already noticed a few new buildings going up and others being torn down.

So maybe the billion dollar developers will be getting rid of the Diamond street gang-members in this area, something the police have not done in many years.

The new park which is being built around this area (next to new Belmont high) is also surrounded by a few other crappy apartment buildings which are also due for demolition. I guess the downtown development is slowly spreading to this area of Echo Park.

Some friends of ours, live in this immediate area and tell me that the people moving into their building and the one next to them are anglo/white. Over in my area of Echo Park I notice the same thing, but what poor latinos can afford to buy a $600,000 dollar house.

A man and woman (Wally and Big Betty) pick up a hitchhiking migrant worker (N14), hit him with a tire iron, plant false ID on him, wreck the car to make his death appear acccidental. When the doctor's (TijuanaJailer) report indicates murder, Chief Dan Mathews (Don Quixote) finds five similar "accidents" and suspects insurance fraud. After following several blind leads, he traces the insurance payoffs to a single address- a rural store, the unofficial post office for migrant workers. All evidence points to the guilt of an ex-con (Gava Joe), but Dan Don Quixote exposes and chases the real culprits, before they can kill for the sixth time.

Anonymous said...

Jim, beautiful example of "noir fiction", and even though I love the hero role and being chief, and although I think Tijuanero fits the good doctor part, and without a doubt Gava Joe would be the likely murder suspect, and sin duda I would suspect insurance fraud (being a scammer myself), it's also obvious Wally would be the small town reporter who resists the pressure from the local town businessmen and crooked Rotarians to uncover the rotten underbelly of corruption and graft in "the town without pity", and in his dying breath, after being run over by the "wheat combine tractor", he points out the culprits, the town council who hires Juan Corona (aka Anonymouse) to kill all those farmworkers for the insurance settlement.

PS, with all due respect and no offense to anyone, El Montero, SV VBS, OC half breed, Norwalquero, Youngster with game, and Sgt Valderama, are definately the murdered farmworkers in this film written by the non pareil screenwriters "Jim" and "Still no Script"

Yes I agree with you that old fool needs to get a job or a hobby, he is constantly telling us about all the consulting and constrution jobs he does but I wonder when does he actually work, because he spends most of his time posting the same boring and repetitive comments here in wally's world.

The really funny part is when he answers his own post with all those different names. Why does jim only post comments about Don Q. and never posts when Don. Q is not posting comments, seems a little strange to this old vato.

I hope Don Q. marches in L.A. for several days that way we do not have to see his boring comments here in wally's world. I guess he can not grasp the concept of many people being tired of his comments.

I like the BarfInTheHat blog it is some pretty funny shit over there

To to the vato saying Mayor V. was introduced by somebody from CIS, I watched the mayor's speech last night and he did not mention CIS, but he did mention homeboy industries. Maybe CIS was talked about before the news cameras were taping because I know for sure they were not mentioned during the T.V. brodcast of his speech.

And a police captain was on the news today complaining about Mayor V. saying any school in L.A. is under gang control. Mayor V. said the magnet school he was at had 4 gangs trying to get control of the school. I think the gang captain needs to visit a few schools in east L.A., south central L.A. and central L.A. because there are too many cholos in schools already, I guess we do not need Blinky Rodriguez putting more cholos in schools (CIS), we have enough.

Hey Anonymouse! I took a look at your blog http://barfinthehat.blogspot.com/

Congratulations, you've taken your copycat skills to a new level of imatation and mimicry, I am flattered you have spent so much time studying and using my writings and especially my old street "Spanglish".
While perusing your new blog I seemed to understand your psychological makeup with a bit more understanding and sympathy for your plight.
Your blog "barf in the hat" is captivating in it's strange yet telling content, with all of your idiosyncratic imitations and nom de plumes on display for the world to see, and speculate on, and with all it's furious and feverish attempts at humor and sarcasm.

If I may speculate a bit, a while back Gava Joe thought you might be the kind of person that had immense amounts of time on his hands, due to possibly being confined to a wheelchair or iron lung.
Is this true?, or are you maybe a Dr. Strangelove type of patriot that works for the CIA and scans websites around the globe, keeping our nation safe from the effects of various brown races (including Italians!) who would seduce our children and lead them to some greaseball demise?

Are you the escaped "Alien Being" from the Rosewell UFO incident so many years ago?,who uses the world wide web to absorb and mimic certain subcultures of the Mexican AMerican subculture?

Are you a defrocked Catholic Priest?, who after leaving the church has taken up Computer Science in a quest to instruct and direct the children of the world in your direction?

Anyway thank you for mentioning me in so many ways in your blossoming website "barf in the hat". As we have heard from other Wallista's recently "immitation is the highest form of flattery", and I'm sure when "Wally" reviews your blogsite he will feel as I do.

In closing let me say to you that Sleep and proper nutrition are essential for solid mental health, and that our mental health professionals who prescribe pharmaceuticals for certain, uhhh afflictions are trained professionals who after many years of schooling are capable of insight into illness's of the mind, so take your medicine's as prescribed and the world will be a brighter place tommorrow.
