At least you'll get some produce.

In the southlands, beware the cholos masquerading as promoters of ethnic pride asking for your hard earned money to promote the chicano UNICEF:
In return for a 10% donation you'll get a picture of a tecato, a brief essay about his history of living in deprivation(SHU), and the promise he'll write you once a month to ask for more money.

I'm guiessing Wally went on vacation because anyone with a healthy appetite for life does that now and then. I know its hard for some of you wannabe gangstas to comprehend leaving the hood except to vacation in la pinta but people take trips because they want to see the world and/or enjoy life all the time.

now i'm just pushing buttons to get some dialog going here. Those farmer and Unicef jokes were both funny

EVERYBODY JUST CHILL!!!!
C'MON,ALL THIS IS NONESENCE!
WHY DOESN'T ANYBODY WONDER WHY THE S.W.A.T. TEAM KILLED THAT LITTLE GIRL? I KNOW HER FATHER WAS WRONG BY WHAT HE DID,BUT GOD C'MON!THE OFFICERS KNEW THERE WAS A BABY AT RISK,THEY SHOULD OF HELD BACK LONGER,THEY HAD PLENTY OF MAN POWER AND WEAPONRY TO WAIT IT OUT,BUT THEY DIDN'T THEY KNEW HE WAS A LATINO AND THEY WENT ON THE OFFENCIVE,IF HE WHERE BLACK THEY WOULD OF WAITED ALL NIGHT FOR SURE!
BECAUSE THE BLACKS STICK TOGETHER,IN THOSE KINDS OF SITUATIONS THEY UNITE!!THE RAZA NEVER DOES!THEY JUST SIT BACK AND TAKE IT! I HAVE NOT SEEN ANY MAJOR FIGURES THAT ARE LATINO EVER TAKE A STAND FOR OUR RAZA IN A SITUATION
LIKE THIS!! WHY IS THAT? HOW COME THE BLACKS ARE SPEAKING OUT ABOUT THIS? WHERE ARE OUR LATINO LEADERS IN THIS? THE LITTLE GIRL THAT DIED WAS LATINA? THE FATHER WAS GOING NUTS!!S.W.A.T. HAS NEGOTIATERS! HOW COME THEY DIDN'T WAIT IT OUT? WE'VE ALL SEEN WHEN A SUSPECT IS BARRICADED FOR WELL OVER TEN HOURS,ARMED WITH A WEAPON AND IN SOME CASES HAS SHOT AT POLICE,THEN THE COPS WAIT IT OUT AND SHOOT IN SOME TEAR GAS AND THEN THEY GO IN,BUT IN THIS CASE WITH A BABY THEY DECIDE TO GO IN LIKE COMMANDOS? I KNOW A COP GOT SHOT,AND THAT WASN'T RIGHT,BUT WHERE WAS THE PRECAUTION FOR THE BABY'S SAFETY?
CAN ANYONE ANSWER OR CLEARIFY THAT? WHAT ARE THE ACTUAL PROTOCALS IN A HOSTAGE SITUATION,THE BABY WAS A HOSTAGE,WASN'T SHE?

Any man, any color, who picks up a child in one hand and a gun in the other is a cowardly piece of shit. His wife was quoted as saying (and I paraphrase) he was holding the cell phone, the baby and the gun and couldn't manage all three. What did he choose to drop? The cell phone that could have saved both their lives. I wouldn't proudly claim him as part of mi raza.

Maybe there is a better way of doing something but the onus is definitely on the father, deranged or not. Our police officers often have to make on-the-spot decisions and 99% of the time I will side with our officers.

If people have a problem with cops then try pulling them out of your communities for a week or two and talk to me about how you are better off without them.

does anyone know of any programs run by prison gangs to help people?
even ones used as fronts?

Anonymous said...

I can't think of one "front" organization run by prison gangs. This type of thing was done by gangster in the past. But they allways got plug as fake Robin Hood and then lost any outreach abiltity. It is the media and the cops that dissalow this type of thing. It would be great to see it. I know in Chicago it was all the rage for gangsters to help out there niehborhood. But money issues and lawenforcement made it impossable. As far as I am conserned if someone wants to help folks get off drugs or stay away from the pen. Cool.
I don't know, can you see the Brand saying stay off drugs and stay in school?

Hmm, the leader of the Aryan Nation is named Tommy Silverstein. I don't know about you, but that name sounds Jewish. What is wrong with this picture?

Anonymous said...

They're Prison Gangs... why would you even ask a question like that? I think a better question to ask is... What am "I" doing to uplift my community? Stop looking to these people like they're the reason for all the chaos... everyone in society should take responsibility for the way it is, especially those who are not active within the community... If you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the problem! It's just a lot easier to point the finger... just like a rata!
If this group of people bothers you so much... what are you doing to stop them?
I know this is not much... but I'm involved with The Big Brothers of Greater Los Angeles... and do other volunteer clean up on the streets (which includes Graffiti removal)! I believe in the "Broken Window Theory", and I think this helps somewhat... maybe it will inspire some who see a young Mexican out there to do the same!
Only thing you're promoting or contributing to is Low Self Esteem... Homie, if you don't have anything positive then shut your mouth! Fuck teaching these white folks and one another about prison gangs, teach them kids where you live how to love themselves! I know it's wishful thinking, but that's the only real way to stop them!

Anonymous said...

I don't go the youth centers and help out physically, but I do give regular monetary donations to a center that helped me get on the right track. I've even been asked to be a paid guest speaker at that center. I said chale because I'm no angel and wouldn't want someone to see me there giving a speech and then doing something illegal later. I could see something like that really fucking with an impressionable youngsters mind. I do kick in with cash to help the center though. I also support all kinds of charities by sponsoring people for the march of dimes, heart walk, diabetes walk, bay to breakers etc etc. That may not seem like it helps raza specifically, but it does in the long run.
So I don't just complain and look to others to solve our problems.
I aksed what gangs did to uplift the community out of curiousity not as a plea for help.
Like it was stated in an earlier post, Chicago gangs (larry hoover) used to do it all the time.
It wouldn't hurt for any prison gang collecting taxes on drug dealers to kick down some turkeys on thanksgiving to the poor residents having to put up with the dealers.

To the person that said that Tommy Silverstien is Leader of the Aryan Nations, first off he is a member of the Aryan Brotherhood, and he is not Jewish. his mom hooked uo with a man when he was young and he took his name.Tommy's real dad is Irish. He is from Long Beach Ca and while I am not white, I grew up there and all the ese's love that dude for the way he handled himself in the face of adversity. Just ask Quate or Sana. He is legend he hit Cadilac the leader of the DC blacks who are mortal enemies of La eMe. And for the last thing the Aryan Nations has nothing to do with the Aryan Brotherhood. The Aryan Brotherhood is non political and really has no racist agenda. They just are white and criminal groups evolve along ethnic geographical lines.Like the eMe and the AB are together because allot of them grew up together in places like Paramont and other semi suburbs of LA, especaily Orange County. Where Sana has close ties to guys like Donny Trout and oldman Bobby Crane. John Stentson was real close to Quate from La Rana, as a matter of fact they fell together on a murder in Seal Beach Ca. Something over drugs.

Is tommy the guy who is in a cell under " no human contact" orders for slipping out oh his handcuffs and killing a co?
Also Barry Mills is listed as being in terminal island FCI hwich is low security, how did he get out of florence USP.

Yes that is the same terrible Tom S. And as for Barry Mills in TI, they have a high security Holding. I think a few of the guys are there because West Valley in San Berdo is trying to get rid of most the people. The fella's are giving them hell as far as motions to get special medical attention and all kinds of petty things though the federal courts.
I think Tyler Bingam is in TI too. The only one that is in the Metropolitain Detention Center is Mac. As for why he is not at Florence, all of the defendants were kidnaped in the middle of the night from there Marion, Pelican Bay and institutions though out the USA. You have to remeber this is the biggest death penalty care EVER!!
Never has there been this many people in one trial in one case that could get the chair. It is with out equal, in the history of american juresprudance.
It is funny they have something like this going on and you have stuff like the Lacey Peterson trial making headlines. They have an unspoken gag order with the feds, Greg Jessner has spoken with a couple of reporters about it, but now all are mute. The AB guys are doing well in their defence and they are winning allot of the motions they have submitted. I am thinking they will get life for most of the members ( this being stupid because that is what they already have, Life) and a couple guys like Mills, John S, Mac and TD getting the death penalty.

In that link for the AB and the war with the DC Blacks, the Confidential Informant
(the one that is blacked out) is Silent Mike, Mike Carmicheal. He is one of the biggest rats ever. He told on La eMe too. He was a big time gangster and ran parts of LA County Jail. He had some guy hit in 4700 that had lots of friends and while he had the green light to do as he thought was right, allot of bad will was set behind that hit. A guy named Billy Fox and Iron Man did the deed and they have rolled since then. Billy was killed on the streets because he talked. But anyway Silent Mike is radio active!! Everyone wants him dead.He was on 48 hours back when he first flipped. He was talking how this person was tipped and this is where they live and run bussiness. He took reporters by all these houses that had gangster shit going on. It included some heavey eMe too. He was from South Bay and knew everyone as he grew up in the life.

I understand there's a few vatos and clickas down down there refusing to pay taxes, you just aint one of them. And by tone of your post, you sound like you resent paying taxes.
Some places up north have varrios and people paying taxes because the NF is trying to do to the North what EME did to the south.
And there have been resiters here as well who also got dealt with.
Still, it wouldn't hurt for either side to kick back some tax money to the varrios, support a mural , pay for a funeral, kick down some turkeys on thanksgiving, sponsor posadas at christmas.or even a scholarhsip for a lil homie..but.. let me guess...that would be showing weakness huh?

First of all, Hard Core gang bangers have either ascended to, or they fancy themselves to be, at a "higher level" of criminal strata which we in LE call "organized crime".

If they perform community services such as enforcing "no drive-by edicts", bank rolling rap groups who perform at Cinco de Mayo events, etc., do you really delude yourself into thinking that this is a "good thing".

A wolf in sheep's clothing who comes in the name of peace but seeks only to legitimize himself and his cohorts is merely looking for a "front" for their illegal operations.

Let the experts, in conjunction with the concerned community folks, take care of these groups (EG's as one poster so aptly calls them - "Evil Groups") and let's stop trying to make them look like heroes.

Our real role models are the war heroes who return from serving our country, our teachers, priests, police officers and the good people who are doing the things that you speak of.

We don't need no stinking gangster throwing filthy money around in search of sanitization from us because of their so called "good deeds".

If you make a "pact with the devil" then we reap what we sow.

KMA

TijuanaJailer said...

(If you make a "pact with the devil" then we reap what we sow)

You couldn't have stated this any better, KMA. We in the community are not deluded and we certainly know who our enemy is. It surely is not the police as some would like for us to think!

It certainly isn't the "common" gang member either. The common neighborhood homie seeks the companionship and "family" that does not exist in many of their real homes.

But then there is the hard core gang member who has indeed graduated into an area in which he has devoted himself to "making a career out of crime".

These people choose a different lifestyle than that of mainstream America and this is their right.

But, when their "game" deviates from the rules of society, then come the consequences. The real gangsters know this and they take their medicine like men.

This is one of the reasons why groups like EME do not wage war against LE. There is an "unwritten respect" that is mutual. They respect us that do our jobs professionally and we respect them when it's time to "hook 'em and book 'em".

The Fear Factor is the obstacle that gang members today worry about. One writer here just stated: "LIKE WE HAVE A FUCKEN CHOICE". This is a powerful truth.

If EME has one thing you can place as foremost in their portfolio it is this: They have demonstrated their ability to control incarerated settings to the point that everyone on the outside is acutely aware that if you do anything to offend them, they can catch you on the inside. Sooner or later, if crime is your game, you will become a resident of a state prison or jail facility and they have the horses to reach most inmates.

It is the fear of such retaliation that keeps Surenos, and whoever they wish to control, in line. If the EME was the controlling group in Northern Cal or wherever, they would similarly mete out the same fear and retribution there.

Gang membership, if you ask me, becomes less and less appealing as time goes by. My kids and nephews would be on a short leash, for sure.

Peace ........

I think we all agree that we need LE to protect innocent people from those who intend to harm them, and I certainly commend ALL LE officials for doing that in and of itself.

But if we're going to get into 'good' vs. 'evil'? Let's at least be fair and factor in our nation's ENTIRE history and come to the conclusion that there is both good and evil on the side of CHICANO STREET GANGS, and THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Whoever said all Carnals are Tecatos is an ignorant lame! That is the stupidest shit I ever heard... you've probably only met one in your whole ignorant existence, and his name is Sapo who lived out in the High Desert! Keep your lame ass off the Blog cause you obviously don't know what the fuck you're talking about!
Like I've said before... there are some good righteous brothers who don't play all that drug shit... and are not just out to get over on a Young Mexican. And nah, I'm not some lop ass mutha F'er who's out here banging or trying to hurt anyone... I'm in the military and have been for the past 6 years, and almost done getting my degree in Engineering, also working on my Criminal Justice... but I grew up around the shit and have a tio up in Pelican Bay and still keep close ties with those from my area. I visit my uncle about every 2 to 3 months, but gots to be careful with all this Gang Investigation bull shit going on out here... they try to make a conspiracy out of every piece of correspondence going in and out the place!
I just can't sit here and not comment on the bullshit some of these fools be saying... talking out the side of their necks! And all that bullshit about real hero's, LMAO... man, there some lame ass fools in the military too, snitch ass punks everywhere I guess... but I guess I'm going with the lesser of the 2 evils! Trust me... these fools here in the Military don't give a fuck about you... we get paid to be here =o)... just like the police and everybody else. Loyalty is a mutha fucker... how many cops you think would be true to their jobs if the price was right to do some dirty shit! You think the SHU is an easy place to be? Who in their right mind, but a LOYAL fool, would embrace that environment? It's easy to give up and debrief... that's the easy way out, and selfish act to say the least! All the rata's doing is putting someone else in the place he once occupied so he can have it a little better, or too breathe a little easier! Man... it's all too one's own opinion I guess, but I see life through the eyes of the fella's sittin in SHU... and I agree with them... some strong individuals right there, and I know I'm not them, but my loyalty is there just as strong!
Keep your ignorant shit off here!

(But if we're going to get into 'good' vs. 'evil'? Let's at least be fair)

In discussing people like the EME and other "hard core" groups in the context of "good versus evil" you are saying that we should be fair?

Where does fairness enter the picture? Do you really think that, as a law abiding citizen, I would be more concerned with ridding my neighborhood of drug dealers or more interested in how the cops obtained the search warrant to conduct their search?

Trust me, they can keep their "fairness". I don't care how you do it, just get the evil slime out of here.

I've read the "splitting hair" comments of the semantical use of the word "terrorism" between you and TJailer. Are we now going to debate the definition of the word "evil"? I hope not.

In one clip they go to the SHU and say this cell belongs to a guy controlling most of the crime in the San Fernando Valley. He has a folder with a black hand on it and a 13. The guard says this guy is a heavy hitter in the EME. they never show his face but do a search of the cell and find a warm pipe with some fresh herion residue. I think they find a spoon as well. NO ONE EVER SAID ALL CARNALES WERE TECATOS, BUT SOME OF THEM ARE.

Remember, you are on a site that is sensitive to certain phraseology!!

It is kind of funny reading these debates on La eMe being either a love fest or a preditory organization. I mean it is a Gang and thus the later being more likely. I have been in the SHU, with all the fella's and let me tell you it aint easy. You think that you can just D.O. and it will all be cool? Well lets just take a look at that idea. You understand that the CDC has only one real PC yard. That is PHU in Corcoran. There are about a couple dozen people on that yard, so it is not likely you will get to that one. You do have options like Folsom A yard. But if you was really moving and shaking chances are you have people that put you on thier enemy list. So that is out. Same goes with Mule Creek. So chances are you are going to have to go to a half and half yard. Like Tahachapi 4b or what ever one they have set up at the moment for Dropouts. These yard change over all the time and you get folks that should not be there. THey have what is called a 90 day rule. Meaning you have 90 days to GET OFF!! If not you are in the hat anyhow. With all the people that have chosen to drop out you will not get to one of those yards for a while anyway. You will end up in a prerelease SHU yard. This has people that have beat there SHU program on the princable that they are not really a Validated Gang member. You most likely will get moved on. You know you got family back in the hood right? well the guys will not be too happy with them. So do you think CDC is going to get them out of town? No... Unless you are testifying for the FEDS this is not going to happen.Even then only your imediate family (wife and kids). So if you know someone who is looking for a way out. The only real option is to do your time get out and then get out of So-Cal. As long as you aint ratted on no one you should, and should is a pretty weak word, be OK. So when Leo Duarte comes at you and says "Hey you want to come out of the rain" think long and hard. You made a choice and a blood oath. Looks like you are screwed.
I don't think the Christain thing will work either, we have had that discussion on this site. But those guys that went that route must have something special going on, because it is not mainline shit. You might move to another area in LA, but folks have tried that one and come up short.

KMA,

I thank you for your service as a peace officer. If there's someone in my front yard waving a machete around, I'm comforted knowing I live in a country where I can make a phone call and police will come to help me.

But if your going to resort to using words like 'evil' when describing criminal sub-groups, don't be surprised when your reminded that the very 'evil' gangs commit has been commited by statehoods worldwide throughout history in order to establish their states' territory, and this nation is no exception.

Anonymous said...

You know that is a good question, I remember stabbing a guy on the yard in Palm Hall Chino, back then you had a pretty good chance of only getting a 115 and a SHU term. I know I sat in Cypress Seg for about a year waiting to see if the DA would pick up the case. THey didn't and I went on my marry way to Tahachapi SHU then to Corcoran then on to the Bay. With a few runs down for court, we used to call friends down for court on anything, you could subena them and poof, next thing you know you are on the first thing smoking to LA County. I think they found a way to stop that.

We never know, StillNo. A country as wide open as this one has and will likely always offer so many opportunities for both domestic and foreign incidents, regardless of who the Big Man is in that Oval Office.

Our bad boys certainly pale in comparison to international bad boys but that's o.k. Apples is fine with me.

We indeed have a monumental task in our communities which requires people unity. I believe that it has been proven historically that our police force is only as good as the degree of community involvement. This is where informants are so invaluable.

Some on this board have choice descriptions for this breed of vato: "misplaced loyalty", "rats",
"opportunists", etc. The truth is, the LE community would have a tough time making cases stick without these turncoats. Imagine the chaos that would exist were it not for our intelligence community.

This life is all about choices and when you make a wrong choice our society usually provides an avenue for redemption. This works in all walks of life: from broken marriages to parent-child reconciliations; from forsaking an alcohol or drug habit to turning your back on a life of crime.

Having worked with informants who reverse their field in life, I believe it oftentimes takes more courage to "turn" from a life of crime (regardless of the pitfalls) than to continue "walking that walk".

As we become more and more acquainted with "Gangs, crime, cops and politics in Los Angeles",
I hope we all become richer in our insight to this world.

I will be in a "foreign country" for the next few weeks but will try to keep up with Wally's World from a remote unit. Enjoy yourselves.

I know a lot of asians kick it with the chicanos and some even speak with same mannerisms. I don't even how many asian brothers I know named "Chino" but its alot. For the most part they kick it by themselves with small numbers probably kicking up some form on protection in the pintas. Espcially Vietnamese gangs, though I believe there was some tension with viet and San Gabriel valley gangs.
If you are not aware, the San Gabriel valley has lots of Asian gangs. One of the biggest Viet gangs is TRG. Tiny Rascal Gang.
But for the most part they prey on their own. Specializing in home invasion and extorting protection money from local store owners. Most triads (chinese gangs) work undercover and don't make themselves seen. Viet gangs are norotious for their propensity for violence.
In Long Beach you will see lots of Cambodian gangs who lean toward the black culture. There big Cambodian Crip gangs in the LBC.
Don't fake on them because they are small, they have lots of heart and quick to pull the trigger. All in all, they are good peoples, very loyal.

This is interesting. I learned on this board where "farmero" (derrogatory NF label) originated and now I'm hearing/reading about "homie".

Does that mean that the Holmes X13 Gang is a-brewing and that maybe their Watson Street neighbors need to be looked at? (smile)

And on that note for the sake of fairness our Anglo brothers seem to have been left out of the horrible racial jokes! I'll try to rectify that. "a very anal retentive gavacho stuck on the #5 freeway eastside LA parks his beemer and is having a spritzer in a local bar.He is sitting by himself at the end of the bar and talking very loud into his own hand, the other patrons after a short while call over the bartender. "Hey Cuco! You better tell that huero baboso to stop talking to himself so loud he's getting on everyone's nerves. Cuco goes over to the gaby and says hey man whats goin on with the platicando? The gavacho replies, "Oh pardon me I know it seems strange but due to the fact that I'm on my cell so much I had the cellphone implanted into the palm of my hand, please buy everyone a drink on me, and by the way where is your restroom? The bartender answers "Our bathroom is really fucked up now and isn't in service(typical!) but if you go out the back door and accross the alley there's a portable toilet you can use but be carefull this is a bad neighborhood! Cuco gets back to work and after about 45 minutes someone asks"hey what happened to the gavacho who was was platicando solo? The bartender Cuco says "sonafabitch I better check on him and he goes out back in the alley and immediately sees a trail of toilet paper leading to the portapotty. As he gets closer he notices the huero on his knees on the toilet and a huge roll of toilet paper stuffed up his ass. "Mother Fucker what happened man,I told you this was a bad neighborhood, let me help you up". The gavacho panics and yells back "don't touch me I'm receiving a "Fax".

"ok where and why did the syle of dress for homeboys come about like khakis and t shirts"

Alright, homes, here goes. And I don't want anyone getting on my ass for being long-winded.

This is an article from the L.A. Herald Examiner dated Thursday, June 15, 1978. It is front page of the Fashion Section!

There's a youngster nicknamed "Payaso" standing in front of a mural (VNE, I think) wearing "draped khaki's, white
T-shirt and stretch belt".

Another homie wearing a pair of "Wino's" (canvas boat shoes) with neighborhood inscription: Casper VNE.

A third vato named Steve Delgado, known as "Flaco" showing "barrio homeboy tattoo and red (red?) bandana".

---- by KAREN ANDERSON
Herald Examiner Fashion Editor

Text: IT'S THE STYLE OF THE BARRIO. ETHNIC. TRADITIONAL. BARATO. CHOLO IS FASHION.

Cholo.
A new fur? A kind of Perrier? A slick disco step? Can you get it at Gucci?
Style is a matter of perspective and where you live seems to have a lot to do with it. Consider the definition of style by those who inhabit the Emerald City, also known as Beverly Hills. What appears to be a trend of international importance there, may in fact be confined to six blocks of exclusive shopping.
Back in the barrios of East Los Angeles, style is another story. Cholo is traditional, not seasonal.
Which is one reason why a few young inhabitants of the county housing project called Estrada Courts are on this Saturday morning kicked back on the grass, considering what cholo means.
In the thick silence of concentration, what occurs is like looking into a mirror for the first time. How do you define yourself? Nobody asked before.
An East L.A. veterano explained the previous day that the term "Cholo" originally meant a Mexican-Indian. But current connotations signify a dress style which is as traditional in Los Angeles barrios as refried beans.
But verbal definitions do not come easy in the barrio. Visual description -- graffiti on a fence, a mural on a wall -- is the common communication.
So we sit on the grass trying to form words around a dressing tradition which has been passed down unconsciously from grandfather to father to son.
"You'll get all kinds of answers," says Doug Sanicola, the young manager of Al's Army & Navy store which, according to his estimates, clothes 65 to 75 percent of all cholos and would-be cholos in East L.A.
"Some people will say it's somebody who carries a knife, some will say it's an age group. I think it's a certain style of dress.
The 73-year old Al's on Whittier Boulevard is to East L.A. what Giorgio is to Rodeo Drive. "I have 45-year old men come in who tell me they were customers as kids," adds Sanicola. One wall of the store is devoted to khaki pants in waist sizes from 26 to 50 - a basic of the Cholo wardrobe.
Cholos who want the pants to drape over the shoes and the oversize-look everywhere else buy from two to six sizes larger than their waist. "I have a guy who comes in every three months and buys three pairs of khakis in a 46 and he's a 34 waist," Sanicola says.
"We went for khaki in a big way long before the kids in this generation wore it," recalls Joe Santos, who was a young man during the zoot suit era in the '50's (sic? I think he meant 40's). Santos relates the love of the khaki color to the enthusiasm of Chicanos toward the World War II effort. "Back then, we all wanted to pack and go."
Also back then, Santos remembers young men from Latin neighborhoods
who carefully dyed their pure silk underwear pastel colors with a 25-cent package of Rit. They bought wing tip shoes for $30 at Rogers Independent Shoe Store on Broadway and had their zoot suits tailored at Thomas the Tailor or Murray's on Third and Main.
"The only time we weren't dressed was when we were working," says Santos, who contrasts the "uptown" look of the '40's Mexican-American male with today's casual Cholo style.
It was a matter of swamping out trucks or working in the produce market cutting celery to save for a zoot suit which cost from $40 to $60 for the pants and $75 to $100 for the coat.
The zoot suit Santos remembers with special fondness was robin's egg blue which draped carefully over his wing tips.
Just when current Cholos adopted the whiter-than-snow T-shirt, bandana, black hat style to go with their khakis is anybody's guess..........

(This article is continued on the following post)

Anonymous said...

(Cholo Post -- Continued):

......"As the morning sun hits the two-story murals on the walls of Estrada Courts, the young men of the Varrio Nuevo neighborhood gather in the shade of the Aztec wall to kibbitz on the The Great Cholo Picture for the newspaper.
Budweiser replaces morning orange juice. "Hey, 'homes,'" greets each newcomer who saunters by in a white T-shirt, his Budweiser accessory dangling from an arm. "Hey, Payaso, put on the dark glasses. Makes you look like a real killer," yells another homeboy who perceives this picture-taking session to be like holding a cattle call at central casting. If they want a Cholo, they get a Cholo, man.
More impomptu auditions take place. Steve Delgado, the Varrio Nuevo gang worker, takes off his shirt to display his tattoo. "VNE" below "Steve" cut just under the right shoulder blade. The "VNE" stands for Varrio Nuevo Estrada.
It also stands for the basic barrio I.D. which is inscribed on the hand, arm or back of every homeboy in every East L.A. neighborhood from Marianna Mara through Little Valley and Arizona Mara, up the hill to Geraghty-Loma Mara to Varrio Nuevo. The tattoo signifies a sense of place and of macho, one symbol of the rite of passage into young manhood for the Chicano male.
"Give me the headband," commands Steve, who ties it around his head like Sinbad the Sailor. "When do we wear these? When we go out on gang wars," he snarls in his best Steve McQueen imitation.
Killing time between photo set-ups, a question is put to the group:
"Ever heard of Rodeo Drive?"
Silence.
"Dior?" "Halston?" "Bill Blass?" "Gucci?"
Confusion.
Then one hopeful voice, "Are they names for other gangs or something?"

(End of article. Hope I didn't bore anyone -- later.)

Good look shopping around your scrips in a town that greenlights (a hollywood term, not killing someone!) Pootie Tang but kills 1000's of good scripts a day.
To answer a few questions:
What did they wear hairnets in the 80's?
The quick answer was we did it to train our hair to comb straight back. Nowadays the shaved head look is so popular but back in the day, the pompador was the look and most of the cholos has the combed back look. To keep their hair going back they would wear the hairnet, mostly while they slept. Same thing also when they first try to comb their hair back, you had to "train" your hair first and would need to wear a hairnet for a week or two.
As far as the khacki look, the preferred pant of the cholo look were Ben Davis, Dickies were considered the poor man cholo look.
The history of work pants go back to youth detention camps were lots of labor duty was performed the inmates were given work pants and then look was taken the streets.

Sorry but I have an old Paso Robles flick from 1962 when I was in CYA and the home boy dedicating it to me signs it, "Tu Home Boy", Lito. I can't say when we first started using it but we were youngsters for sure and I was about 15 then.

T-VO said...

I wasn't kidding, I'm telling you it goes back to Sherlock Holmes. I bet the word can be traced back to the 40's when Zoot Suiters first started using it and the book sherlock holmes has been around since the 1800's. Not only have some Veterano's told me this but there was also a professor of chicano studies on a TV show called Home Turf who was discussing the barrio life and some historical facts. So in this case, this Joker isn't joking. :o)

so now everybody wears white t shirts all the rappers wear it the black folks and they are taking credit for atrting that, what is the deal with that?

Anonymous said...

How about the "bouncing" low riders in those rap videos? Is that a 'black thing' too?

Anonymous said...

Its a little know fact carhopping was started in Oakland by black folks. The mexicans from LA seen this and killed the black car club doing the hopping so mexicans could take credit for lowriding first. I heard this from the big homie handlebar from bicycle street gang.

T-VO said...

Lowriding definitely started with Chincanos' dating back to the 40's with Pachuco's and zoot suiters fixing up thier bombs. Old Chevy Fleetwoods or Fleetlines as we referred to them. Blacks got it from mexicans in the 70' and 80's with the 64 impalas and they even started wearing pendltetons and flannels just like cholos. If you ever seen old school black gangsters, they had the same look as cholos. Khacki's and flannels.
"Hopping" with hydraulics has been around for a long time, long before gangster rap popularized it. Hell, lowering cars has been around for over 50 years. Its much more sophisticated now, but back in the day we used to just cut the springs or some would take the springs out all together. Us farmeros would lower our chevys so it was easier to pick up the lettuce as we drove by listening to Brenton Wood. ;o)

Joker,
I was just fucking around earlier seeing who I could bait. You know , this gang shit regarding the differences between north and south feeds on itself. I remember growing up all the chicanos would have three creases down the back of their shirts and would wear their pants high. It wasn't until the 90's that northerners would only crease their shirts with two in the back and the surenos did three. Also it was about this time nortenos identified themselves in YA by sagging and the surenos wore their pants high. Shit back then you had to go to the pinta to know what norte/sur was about. Now everyone thinks they know dresses accordingly and never even been anywhere.

Who remembers taking the string out of the sides of your state issue tramaos to leave a white line along the side? I recall all the homies trying to outdo each other baby cuffs too. damn those are some good memories.

Lets not forget the beige or dark blue Levi's courdouroy(sp) with the winos.

Orale' Joker, you are definitely a firme guy who seems to know his pedo. That lowriding thing reminds me of back in the day, I got a 60 Chevy Impala and my friend Felix' pops heated the springs. Then I sprayed the windows with that stuff you got at Pep Boy's it was called "liquid smoke" The car had old school cragars and just for effect I put a couple of firme primer spots, small ones so it looked like I got shot at while cruising down 24th St. in Northtown Cuca...what you know 'bout that.

Joker, I actually LIKED Pooty Tang!

I know what your saying, though.

The type of film I'm sure plenty of us in here would like to see certainly isn't going to be produced by any of the big studios for a long time. I think the Edward J. Olmos situation sealed the deal on that; Not to mention that Hollywood is only interested in making films for 14 year olds today.

I'm always looking to the independent scene for films similar to AMERICAN ME, BOULEVARD NIGHTS, or MI VIDA LOCA, but all that's really out there are low budget, action flicks where the acting is horrible. I'm sure some of you have seen these on the shelves at Blockbuster.

Not to diss those that made these films; I commend them for trying. They may very well be Chicanos who have aspirations to be filmmakers, and so far this is the best they can do.

But I don't think we're going to see anything good again till at least an indy company with some good producers and a bankroll (i.e. Lion's Gate, etc.) gets behind one of these projects.

Good to see the blog has gotten back to what it's good for; People sharing their experiences for others to learn a thing or to.

I'm enjoying the stories about the lowriders and dress styles from the past and up to today. Certainly makes me think of some old friends in high school who were close to this life.

Looks like we got some good people in here who know how to get this thing back on track when it de-rails!

Thanks to all of you.

Heyyyy, easy on the lechuga jokes.
We don't need our northern neighbors coming down on us. I always wondered in Junior High and High School how the teenagers could afford such beautiful fixed up rides (1958 thru 1963 were my Jr. High thru High School years) but were dirt poor! My mom said they were probably selling dope but she was mostly incorrect. These guys squirreled away their money, mom and dad would pitch in and the Boulevard (Whittier Boulevard in East L.A.) was the place to be on the weekends. If you mistakenly drove past Eastern (or was it Ford?) on the Boulevard on a weekend night, you were STUCK !! Once you hit Indiana (where the Golden Gate theater was located) then you could turn and head north or southbound. Even the side streets would be packed and the E.L.A. Sheriffs would be pissed off because they could not pursue a wanted gang member or other violator because they too were STUCK !*&@#!! There would be carloads of fine "tenderloins" looking to meet guys and the cholos would do the Injun thing (chins jutting upward in that defiant glare) until a Car Club member said or did something to offend and then the shit would hit the fan. The Chevy Boys, 486 Men, The Gestapos and other car clubs often clashed with the cholos. Many car club members were of the same mind set as gang members only they dressed better. We called them "continentals". Whittier Blvd. contained a melting pot of Chicanos. I was a nerdy "brain" at that time and some of my class members got STUCK on a weekend night and we had the time of our life.

Back in '69 while in TS I worked the laundry room. We got these fine denims with the orange thread on the side. Back in the day you got your issue once or twice a week. When we got those new bonaroos in, I was trading 'em for camels. A lot of commerce went on with the laundry and the kitchen. Anybody remember those old school "kick outs" the brown dress shoes that looked like Stacy's. Put a piece of plastic in the toe to keep 'em from breaking down?

The eyebrows do seem to be unique to femage gang members; But women everwhere are obsessed with hair removal. I'm guessing the eyebrow thing has something to do with that.

And the black bracelets? Reminds me of the white girls I grew up with in the '80s.

Then of course, like every trend in the burbs, along came the rumors that every bracelet she wears represents one guy that she had ... with.

Did people say that about cholas who wore the bracelets too? Lol. You'd have to have balls.

Script, I'll take it back even a lil bit farther with gangster flicks like the Warriors, The Wanderers and Lords of Flatbush, to a lesser extent The Outsiders. (Remember the movie "Zuit Suit" with Olmos about the Sleepy Lagoon murders.)I loved those films when I was a kid, those glamorized the street gang life but not necessarily in a negative way. Those films showed neighborhood pride and loyalty to your friends.
Just like everything else though, our society now needs things to be hard and dark, black or white. No such thing as grey anymore.
As for the cholas, I can remember some of the hard core broads use to put Razor Blades in their hair! So when they threw down it would discourage any other chick from pulling hair! I hope they remembered to take them out before shampooing!!

Orale! Baby Cuffs, holmes. I remember in Juvie Hall we would crease our pants with a comb, I'm sure you vatos remember that. I agree, I grew up around San Jose and remember the 2 creases. I even recall Nortenos' putting the badana in our left back pocket and sureno's in their back pockets.
Yea, its true, I didn't even hear about the north/south blue/red stuff on streets in the mid 80's. I can recall stories of veteranos who told me in the 70's they would wear all kinds of different color bandanas. In those days, one gang would sport one color so on and so forth. Some would wear brown bandana for brown pride. Once the NF/EMe stuff spilled to the street, thats when the whole red/blue thing really started creating dividing lines.
To draw it all together and thats when crusing the boulvard started dying out when too many vatos were getting blasted on a Saturday or in some places, Sunday night. Cops too notice and started throwing up "No Cruising Zones" and the lowrider lifestyle started dying fast.
"Oh, King and Story on a sunday night, How I miss thee."

oh, yeah in YA the homeboys from up north considered the left hand side ours and the surenos the right. we would wear our panos on the left hand side. anyone know why that is? I was told why but it must have not stuck.

I had a few folders in elementary school that had the pachuco spirit from Zoot Suit (olmos) on them. One had him inthe black and red suit, the other had the three rucas around the jukebox.
The best part of the Movie though was when Henry Reyna comes home and the party begins.
"antes se bailaba el swing,
el boogie woo y jitterbug pero
todo eso ya torico

I love, "The Warriors".

And, I agree that movies about gangs should focus more on the positive instead of the negative. However, I think the characters and the scenery have to be authentic. That's where AMERICAN ME and MI VIDA LOCA kicked ass. But, yes, those films dont' leave much as far as optimism goes.

Then again, BLOOD IN BLOOD OUT, BOUND BY HONOR did have that positive story, but the acting is obviously a bit over the top.

Realism in movies is very important to me. Trying to find a way to combine the realism with a positive message is the tricky part; Probably because reality isn't so positive. But a film can be whatever it wants. It takes good producers, directors, writers, actors, consultants, etc. to pull it off. Hopefully we'll see it one day.

And, I have a friend in San Jose who tells me King and Story still jumps off on Sunday afternoons, but the cops clear it out around sun down. San Jose hasn't lost it's lowriding culture, and never will.

Trust me, San Jose has lost alot. They still may be cruisin, but in the 80's and early 90's it was off the hook. So many fine ladies and nice rides. Cruisin on Cinco De Mayo was crazy. Started at noon until the cops broke it up in the 1 or 2 Am.
Started on Santa Clara Street near downtown, then right on King all the way down to Story. Ah, the good ol' days.
Bound by Honor is such a joke.
Check this out, my old lady went to school with Seidy Lopez who played Mousie in Mi Vida Loca. They're still friends but haven't seen her in quite long time but she is still fine!
They both went to Hollywood High.
Oh, Mousie from Echo Park, lets play Mickey and Minnie!!! ;o)

Ok here is some truth about us old pachucos or as they used to say the vatos. I came from the eastside of LA in the 50's 60's but knew people from all over the area El Monte, Pasadena, San Fer, Watts, Etc. and we all dressed and had ranflas that were the same, it was our culture. The reason for the old Lowriders all fine an beautiful (no Studebakers, or Cadillacs, or Plymouths, just "Chevey's!")and the reason for the Khaki's,or County's or Gray Khaki's or Frisco Jeans, was basically because we were poor and couldn't afford any better, shit most families had 8 or 10 kids in those days. But the culture of the Chicano or Mexicano was and is that whatever you have you make the best of it, you make even poor shit an art form, you transform the ordinary into something unique and beautiful. We vatos all dressed firme in those days, no fucking hair nets, tennis shoes, baseball hats, raggedy ass wrinkled clothes. NO! we bought our Khakis for example, long, then we hemmed them up neat, just so they broke the crease over your shoes, which by the way were either "Florshiems" or "Stacy Adams French Toes" and shined like a mirror, then we took those Khaki's and sprayed them with spray starch and ironed them over and over until that crease would cut you. (By the way, we never crossed our legs so the crease stayed intact). Our T shirts had to be "Pennys TownCraft" white with the high neck and usually ironed till perfect. Our shirts we wore, and if anybody disagrees or doesn't know this they are falso's, were "Sir Guy" shirts which were beautiful and unusual, and I hear talk about pleats 2 or front or back, caca!, they were ironed with three straight sharp crease's in the back and two razor sharp creas's in the front! We took pride in ourself in those days, face clean as a whistle, hair combed straight back (maybe with the help of an old nylon stocking cap at night only)and shinning with pomade and not "lucky tiger" but with "Yardleys" green pomade. And when we "fell out" to the velote's with the vato's (after dropping a benny and a red chased with White Port-Lemon Juice or maybe some "Silver Satin" and the music was playing some oldies such as "Lovers Island" or "Night Owl" or the "Chantels" and we saw those beautiful Chicana's (who in those days were always bashful, sexy) and we asked them to dance, and OK stop me now before I get into the Twilight Zone! but that was the way it was in my day.

Absolutely. Gangsta rap screwed things up for sure. That was a mayate thing and now the Chicanos are simply copying them. And it ain't only Northern Chicanos acting like mayates either. There are plenty of L.A. Chicanos who do the same. Hell, the South Siders from Florencia, Watts, 155th, Compton, etc. always talked like mayates. "Niggah, please!!"

Senor, You have earned your right to wander down memory lane. Truly in a time that had more innocence than now when being in love with your ruca listening to oldies with your homeboys at the park was a beautiful day.

Last I heard he is going to be tried as an adult for Double Murder. The youngest ever in Santa Clara County. He shot 3 sureno gang members in a Jack in the Crack off Tully Road. I think his name is James Ortega. You may want to Google it and see if there are any updates. He can pretty much expect life in prison and graduating from CYA to the Pinta when he's old enough and his life will now be in the hands of the NF and he will undoubtly be asked to put in work. And who says CYA doesn't rehab our troubled youth??
Man, its more like Gladiator school for the big leagues. Its damn shame when you are only 14 yrs old. He had so much ahead of him. I'm sure all his West Side Homies from Horseshoe are all braggin about him.

Bound by Honor was okay. The character of the tecato artist is played by Jesse Borrego. I think thats his name. Anyways the vato is mentioned as an NF sympathizer/ associate in the book " RISE AND FALL OF THE NUESTRA FAMILIA." There are possibly two and definetly one picture of him in the book hugging NF'ers.
Jesse made a movie called veteranos at the home of former NF captain Huerito Gratton. ( I doubt his status as a captain based on every police report of him drug dealing is for tweaker amounts-being a prison gangsta is not all its cracked up to be i guess)
The movie Heartbreaker is firme. it isn't really about gangs but about lowriders, carclubs, and a celebration of the old days when people were about partying and having a grand tiempo instead of killing each other. Damn, how did the african americans and us get to this?

So i'm kayaking on the north fork of the american river when I see my doctor doing the same. I try to get some free medical advice so I tell my doctor, " doc you gotta help me."
he says whats wrong?
I tell him that "when I wake up, i make to love to my lady, then get ready for work. I carpool to work with the neighboors wife who gives me a BJ on the way. After working for a while I grab an office girl at break and do her nasty in a mop closet. At lunch I bang my secretary at a hotel real good. Then in the afternoon I take a break with another office girl and we go at it in another mop closet.
Finally I go home, slide the maid a few and then hump my wife again before going to bed"
My doctor says, " damn whats the probblem?"
I tell him, " it hurts when i masturbate"

Who would have thought I'd run into my doctor at the river kayaking huh?

The low budget movie Veteranos also stars Sir Dyno that used to be from the rap group Darkroom Familia. Sir Dyno got caught up with NF and the rata Robert "Huerito" Gratton. Gratton was a NF member who used Sir Dyno to make cd G.U.N (Generation of United Nortenos). Gratton snitched out everyone and became the subject of the book "Rise and Fall of the Nuestra Familia".
Sir Dyno was never really a true Norteno but got caught up in the mix and is now trying to plead ignorance that the NF backed the project with their cash. He's now doing time.

(I'm sure all his West Side Homies from Horseshoe are all braggin about him.)

The sad part is that these youngsters are ALL fodder for the "big boys". If the agenda weren't North-South I'm sure it would be something else.

It is good to hear that many do have the "window of opportunity" to change and carry it out.

Others are at that so-called "point of no return" and their lives are doomed.

I read this Ortega kid's story, Joker, and it is very heart breaking for ALL the victims, beginning with the deceased kids, their families to James and his loved ones.

His journey begins ........

If you are gonna dress and play the part, you better be ready for the worse.

And for those of you ( not you hollenbeck resident) talking shit about farmers hanging with blacks and selling out the race, people from Mexico don't like cholos period. They look at them not much differently than they do blacks.

Now its the white guys flipping their caps up and dressing cholo and riding lowrider bikes. I seen a guy at the store all choloed out with a black and white pano hanging out his back pocket. So I asked what that meant, he said nothing to which I responded, " dressing like a gangster don't mean shit if your not one"
This fucker said it was rockabilly style and that white guy rockablliys been dressing like that for fifty years now, even before the mexicans. This puto tried to take credit for cholo style.
I told him I never seen that shit unless it was a white guy in a chicano gang or black guy after they copied cholo style. And I never seen white guys dress like that until recently.
Mind you these aren't AB'ers or NLR'ers but straight nacks playing dress up. They don't even bang, never been to jail and there everywhere.

"ANONYMOUS WRITES:"

"This fucker said it was rockabilly style and that white guy rockablliys been dressing like that for fifty years now, even before the mexicans."
=================================
Suck it up chump!

50/50 RIGHT.....HALF WRONG.

"White KLubs" BACK THEN.....

consisted of the "IMPERIALS" car klub. White Rock-a-Billy car club.
"LOW-RIDERS" to boot. They mostly derived of the "PARAMOUNT/COMPTON" area when COMPTON was still white.

"PACHUCO'S" ran with these white car clubs, and after the war (WW-II) Southgate Greasers, and Downey Whites combined to form some of the finest "CLASSIC" car clubs around.

It was COMMON then for a WHITE rock-a-billy greaser to be called "WHITE-BEANERS" with button-down pendletons/pegged slax, pompadours,
and LOW-RIDER CHEVY'S.

IMPERIALS, MANHATTANS, FOUR ACES,
DIAMONDS, CLASSICS, SKYLINERS, and BLUE DEVILS were ALL white based low-rider gangs of the day. Some of the "ORIGINAL" low-riders of the day were in FACT "EDDIE COCHRAN" type greasers that car-hopped the "ORIGINAL" Mc Donalds in DOWNEY (HISTORICAL SITE) still serving.

Chicanos admired these classic vehicles owned by relatively middle-class white bad-boys that adopted the style, and soon it spread to Bellflower, Pico Rivera, and Whittier. THAT IS FACT MISTER.

Ask some of the old vato's THEY WILL TELL YOU. Blacks were NOT even a PART of the equasion. It was a rock-a-billy white/chican tradition.

Trust me.
