IT'S OVER.
After a little bit of snooping, people in a position to know are claiming that the kites are saying the riots are over. At least for now. From several usually reliable sources, the start of the all the trouble was a San Fer shot caller currently in High Power waiting for his case to go to trial. It was all a pure power move to check the blacks, flex his muscle and keep tight control on the flow of dope and money into County. This was a total County thing and had little to do with homies in the state system. Which is not to say that it has nothing to do with them. Somebody, probably more than one somebody in State, is backing this shot caller's play. The move would have been a hollow threat if somebody in the State system hadn't promised to check whoever got put on the lista once they hit the state system. The message to resisters and blacks was loud and clear. Don't mess with M or you get ass-kicked and stomped.

Think of it as a strategic move to consolidate business in County into one large monopoly. Black free lancers and independents will now either have to think twice about doing business at all or just knuckle under and buy from the one source that either controls all the supply or taxes it.

I hate to drag politics into all this, but sometimes it needs pointing out. Some of the ugliest fallout of the riots came from politicians and activists. Earl Ofari Hutchinson and Najee Ali went on TV at the height of the violence and essentially accused Tony V. of being either racist or race biased. Earl said something to the effect that if Hispanic inmates were getting beaten, Tony V. would be up in arms and shouting for peace. But because the victims, were black, Tony kept quiet. This sort of comment underscores the absurdity of "ethnic" leaders and race politics. Tony V. may be a lot of things, but he ain't racist. The notion that black gangsters will obey you because you're black, or that Hispanics gangsters will somehow snap to attention because the Hispanic mayor yells at them is farcical. Maybe it hasn't dawned on Earl Ofari that some problems are beyond the power of politicians and well-intended activists to fix. Which brings us to the next item.

That $26 million a year LA pays for gang intervention and diversion is going down a big drain. All that money has apparently not been able to get one little homie to leave the life and go straight. City Councilman Tony Cardenas was reported in the Daily News saying, "We've been wasting a lot of money in this city. Because we have a lot of gang intervention and prevention programs to deal with these people and for us not to have success with one is just beyond me." Read about in the Daily News, 2/18/2006. It's a sad commentary when a guy on the city payroll comes to a realization that's been common knowledge for years to every 16-year-old with a spray can. Dude, have you checked your programs? Do you know who's running them?

Doesn't surprise me one bit that the community demagogues pulled out the race card on Villaraigoza. I'm only surprised that they didn't accuse Baca of orchestrating the attacks. Black people simply have no shame when it comes to pulling out the ol' race card, they use it with impunity. I can still hear Johnny "Racecard" Cochran saying: "The American Express Race Card, don't leave home without it."

Because we all know whats going on near Jefferson High and the 38streeters, F13 and ECC, etc etc. Could any of this pedo come from this route? Gracias...

Fuck Wally finally!! its good to hear some good nuevas, belive it, it was needed. Now on the race shit, you know and i know and fuck it everybody knows [even the fucking coons know it] that before this shit was settled one of them was going to pull the ol' race card shit out. Its hard for me to see who's sucking who's dick here? [sorry i had to barrow the phraze] the blacks on white or the whites on black. Cocksuckers [blacks] have to cry about everything big or small, SHIT!!
You know we RAZA never cry we take our shit and handel it all the way to the bank, [ie, THE COUNTY] you
know it. So anyways Wally good shit on the shit and waiting for more.

There once was a blog,
called INTHEHAT.

If you hated Black people,
It's where you were at.

You could remain anonymous,
so no need to fear,

Nobody will know
you were ever hear.

Niggers, this,
Liberals, that,

Give props to Bush,
or you're... 'in the hat'.

The law has no control,
that's what Wally tells us.

Then the commentors say shit
that would make a klansman jealous.

'But this blog is the truth',
they'll bitch and moan.

'The liberal press has it wrong',
'The gangs run the show'.

But then when an activist,
sais their peace.

They suddenly are blamed,
for the violence increase.

That's when anyone with a brain,
can finally see the light.

That InTheHat.com,
is merely a police-spin web site.

Hey that little poem was catchy but, I will tell you what, "I HATE THE COPS, FUCK THEM ALL". You are right the blog has some runs of chaos but, there is still alot of info about the california crime scene. From the beginning this was never a pro black site, or a black hate site but, this is how it is in the varrio's. Where I am from they cocktail blacks houses, the gang in the neighborhood I grew up in are known for being racist. To me it is a huge character trait in sureno gangs, hell in southern california chicanos and chicanas all togethor. To me it is no different when you watch a movie and they make racist remarks, you can't get mad because that is how it really is.
Another thing you have to be black not because of your comment "Then the commentors say shit
that would make a klansman jealous." but, the one that makes it against the cops, when I was in the county the older mayates would try and kick that "solidarity between black and brown, we should be against the cops type shit". I understand where they are coming from and in a perfect world there would be know racism but, hey it is gonna be "politics as usual" so if you don't like it don't get busted and stay out this blog.

What is really ironic about the county riots is that a black OSJ deputy at NCCF whose name I wont mention had information from several CI's about THE SOUTHSIDE getting ready to kick the dog shit out of the blacks and who was calling the riots down but only wrote a memo to his also black OSJ Sgt. Moving shot callers is useless but you still could have made sure your facilities ERT was ready for squashing the riots quicker than gearing up from scratch.People used to get in alot of deep shit for screwing up like that, but I guess if your daddy is Chief of the Custody Division, that mistake will get squashed quicker than blacks got squashed at Wayside.

O C Half Breed said...

Fox 11 is doing a story tonight on the riots. I think it's Chris Blatchford (spelling) he normally has some pretty good shit on his "behind the scenes".

WHATEVER THE REASON IS BEHIND
THE RIOTS,YOU CAN TELL ONE THING FOR SURE..--RAZA WAKE UP!!!-- SOME OF THESE VATOS DONT KNOW SHIT ABOUT THE RULES OR REGULATIONS,AND IF THEY CLAIM A VARRIO THAT HAS A LEGIONS TO THE SUR,THEN MAYBE THEY SHOULD START HAVING RESPECT FOR THE ELDERS,ESPECIALLY FOR THE PEEPS THAT PAVED THE WAY,AND WHAT IM REFFERRING TO IS THE VATOS THAT ARE FRONTLINE,WHEN SOME OF THESE KIDS GO TO JAIL THEY GO SOUTHSIDE,DUE TO THE FACT THAT ITS AN EASIER WAY TO DO TIME,YOU DONT WANT TO END UP WITH THE BLACKS OR EVEN SOME PAISAS THAT ARE NOT GOING TO STAND FOR THEIRS,ON THE SOUTHSIDE THERE IS RULES AND PROGRAMS TO FOLLOW,AND IF YOUR A SOLID VATO YOU SHOULDNT HAVE A PROBLEM,BUT KEEP IN MIND...THEY ARE IN JAIL FOR A REASON,SO NO NEED
FOR CRITISM ABOUT THE PROGRAMS,YOU MAKE YOUR BED!YOU LAY IN IT! RIGHT?
SO NOW THESE VATOS THAT WERE IN THERE DURING THE RIOTS GET A LITTLE TASTE OF BEING ON THE FRONTLINE,SO MAYBE NOW THEY CAN RESPECT OTHER PEOPLES CAUSE,BECAUSE EVERYBODY DOWNS THOSE PEOPLE THAT SET THE PROGRAM,
LOOK AT THEM LIKE OUTSIDERS OR THEY DONT FEEL LIKE THEY SHOULD SHOW THEM RESPECT,THAT THEY ONLY EXPLOITE LIL HOMIES,BUT IF IT WASNT FOR THEM,THE RAZA WOULD BE COWARDING DOWN TO THE BLACKS OR WHITES!AND IF YOU DONT BELEIVE IT THEN LOOK AT THE ONES THAT DONT GO WITH THE FLOW,THEY P.C.UP!!WHY?
CAUSE THEY SEEM TO FEEL THAT THEY ARE POWERFULL ASWELL,BUT MAYBE THEY ARE BACK IN THEIR HOOD ON THEIR OWN BLOCK,BUT NOT IN THERE!!
AND SOME OF THESE RESISTERS ARE PROBABLY LOOKING AT THIS CLOSELY,
CAUSE ITS NOT THEM PUTTING UP THEIR DUKES AND PROVING A POINT!
ITS THE SURENOS!!...WHATS GONNA HAPPEN WHEN BACA TRIES TO SEPERATE THE RAZA AND BLACKS FOR GOOD,HE'S GONNA NEED MORE ROOM RIGHT?AND I BET WHEN HE PUTS GREENLIGHTERS BACK IN MAINLINE TO ACCOMADATE THE BLACKS,SOME PEOPLE WONT RESIST ANYLONGER,BECAUSE THAT IS THE MAIN REASON WHY THERE IS RESISTERS,CAUSE THEY KNOW WHEN THEY GO TO JAIL,THEY ARE PUT SAFELY AWAY!BUT WHEN THE SAFETY ZONE IS TAKEN AWAY,WILL THEY STILL RESIST?I DONT THINK SO! MANY PEOPLE TRY TO PUT DOWN THOSE SOUTHSIDERS,BUT THE SOUTHSIDERS WILL ALWAYS RUN THE SHOW!NO MV,MONGOL OR GREENLIGHTER PERIOD,
ITS ALWAYS GONNA BE SURENOS,AND MAYBE THIS WAS JUST A REMINDER OF WHAT IT IS TO BE A TRUE SOUTHSIDER!

WELL THAT WAS JUST MY 2CENTS!
I PICK NO SIDES,I JUST GO BY WHAT I SEE!!....WELL GOTTA GO,AMERICAN IDOL IS ON!...LOL!!

check this out, OG Nortenos who been on level four mainlines and seen way more action than you have reffered to EME members in my presence with respect and admiration for their sophistication and courage. If you think all surenos are punks and olny strong in packs, your seriously underestimating your enemy. Just the other day I was watching footage of prison riots and there were plenty of times I seen ten or so surenos run up on thirty blacks.
Don't be stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if you know yourself and not your enemy 50/50 chance of victory
know your enemy but not youself 50/50 chance as well
dont know yourself or your enemy-get out the game, you'll lose
know your enemy and yourself-victory assured

Also , your on a computer not staring down 100 fools by yourself. keep it real! Also , if you ever been anywhere, you'd know that even in an all sureno institution, you wont do easy time if your a punk, period. Strong eme will abuse weaker surenos.

Gang rivals declare peace in
San Jose

THEY HUG EACH OTHER IN SYMBOLIC RALLY

By Rodney Foo
Mercury News

It was a rare day at San Jose City Hall's plaza. Former hard-core members of rival gangs -- once generals in the Mexican Mafia and Nuestra Familia -- took the microphone to publicly renounce the gang life and then hugged their sworn enemies.
The stunning sight was part of a movement by Victory Outreach -- a Christian group dedicated to helping broken families and keeping people away from drugs and gangs -- to declare a cease-fire among warring gangs in the city.
Robert Rios, a former Nuestra Familia member, said he wasn't so naive as to believe that Thursday's declaration would immediately bring peace, but he noted, ``It will plant a seed. . . . We know that some day soon kids will put down their weapons.''
The hope is that word of what happened at the plaza will filter back to gang chieftains in prison and create change, said Victory Outreach Pastor Ed Morales.
``If the prisoners hear about this and wonder what happened, then they'll start to know we declared a cease-fire and if they start to declare a cease-fire within the prison house then it comes down here on the streets, and then all young people on the streets will know that wearing red or wearing blue is not what's in no more,'' he said.
Thursday's dramatic ceremony drew more than 200 people who held placards reading, ``We believe in miracles'' and ``Alto A La Violence'' -- stop the violence. And they watched 13 former members of rival gangs, who had totaled about 200 years in state prisons, wrap their arms around each other like long-lost brothers.
Police Chief Rob Davis marveled at the rally designed to thwart gang membership.
``I've never seen as many former gang members publicly denounce gangs and give each other a hug. You don't see that every day. It's not normal. This is a really big deal,'' Davis said. ``For Victory Outreach to be able to get these individuals to come forward and do this is huge.''
Vice Mayor Cindy Chavez told the gathering San Jose needs a ``zero tolerance'' approach to gangs -- that losing one child to gangs or gang violence is unacceptable.
``For the work that you are doing, for those of you who have changed your lives,'' Chavez told Victory Outreach members, ``you will break a cycle that will never have to be in our children's lives. It's incumbent on each one of us to be part of breaking the cycle of violence and the connection to gangs.''
One former gang member who decided to break that cycle was 35-year-old Richard Chavez, who had once belonged to Nuestra Raza, an offshoot of the Nuestra Familia. Chavez admitted Thursday that he never thought he would embrace his gang enemies. ``But, the power of Jesus is overwhelming,'' he said.
He likened gang violence to terrorism and said many of its victims are innocent children. Chavez hoped Thursday's open declaration of a truce by former gangbangers would make a difference.
``We're stepping out of the boat,'' he said. ``We're proclaiming a cease-fire. Proclaiming it means we actually have the belief and faith that it's actually going to happen. We're taking a leap of faith.''
The rally ended with hundreds walking over to the Civic Auditorium on West San Carlos Street for a play, ``From the Bay,'' billed as a ``hip hopera'' about the corrosive effect gang life has on families and the community.

I don't know too much about the MS , but I kinda doubt it . I really don't know a whole lot about the Maravilla's either but it would be my guess that if the Norte would try to clique up with somebody the Maravillas seem to have the same attitude and heart.

Dating yourself? What does that mean "San HO" is it kinda like how you busters put a finger in your ass? I am not sure please elaborate and I am 24 not 18. Since you are so mature shame on you for even commenting about my instigative reply. Also I never been to the joint only to old L.A. county and inglewood,I really don't know how the joint works so excuse me for be ignorant. So will the nortenos hook up with maravilla on the pc yard or are there maravillas on the mainline. Because I think in the county they were slammed up back in 2000 and I never seen any on the mainline.
Also do maravillas still try and hit south siders when they are being realeased from the county? I remember when I was in there everyone was saying that maravillas would be trying to catch dudes slipping by offering rides or just trying to hit you on the street like by the denny's, so they all told me to be heads up with them when I am going home.
Thanks for the recognition "san HO"

Anonymous said...

(I really don't know a whole lot about the Maravilla's either but it would be my guess that if the Norte would try to clique up with somebody the Maravillas seem to have the same attitude and heart.)

So why would a norteno need to "clique up" with anyone? I guess you must think your San Ho's can't handle their own shit? Thats called REALITY CHECK. And the previous dude hit it on the head -- Maravilla is very MARAVILLOSO in what is called Protective Custody. Just picture a vato being received in the 3rd Street substation and the juda asks, "do you belong to any street gang that we should know about or do you have any enemies in county? We need to know now or your life is in your hands".

Reply (if you have huevos de toro: I don't mess with gangs and I don't have any enemies. Period y se aca.

Answer for a "Maravilloso": "I'm from Maravilla, ese (Y que?) and I don't get along with the south". Translation: Please put me in protective custody, officer, because even though I talk big mierda (especially when I get to use my carnalitas computer), I'm really scared and Look: my pants are even wet.

Is that the legacy you want for your San Ho's? What I just wrote happens ALL THE TIME in L.A. County and it is called "Poetic Justice".

There was a time when Maravilla (it all started with el Hoyo) had a "green light" on any member of the White Fence barrio because 3 dudes from WF raped and killed a ho named "green eyes" so every WF member was on a hit list. While it was wrong for the 3 vatos to do what they did, THEY should have paid for this and NOT the entire WF barrio.
Now Mara-wee wee is getting a taste of their own medicine with La EME. An just for your informacion, loco, most of the Maravillas today are no longer on Green light status. do your home work and you'll know why and what happened. MS in L.A. DOES pay taxes .... do your home work. MS will never clique up with EME, Sur, Norte or NF because Chicanos don't like mini-changos. If there is ever any cliquing up (way in the future) it will be when an EME Anti-Christ emerges to consolidate the North and the South under one pinchi umbrella .... then Califas will tremble.

The North-South thing will get old someday and EME will realize that they have puro control. In the meantime, the maranos will do what's in their power to keep the masa brewing.

I myself am a SURENO who done my share of tiempo and was able to "retire" with a good rep. I mean some good mofo's who'll take your wind in a hot minute. Whom either just got tired of the politics, could'nt pay what they owed, or just got put in the hat for petty bullshit, Jealousy, envy, or maybe some other stupid shit that happend when they were 10 years old. Thats why the PC yards are so full. I seen 2 good batos in the gang module get sliced up real good on bogus info. about there neighborhoods. When it was over they got a "despensa homie". Another bato got whacked in New Folsom cause he had the same placasio as his homie who was no good, mistaken identity "despensa homie" Too much wrong information, bogus wilas, and bullshit for some lifers to stay on a yard and do there tiempo "a toda madre" so they check in. Well last tima i was reading this from my lil phone and i kept reading till like 2 in the morning. there are some intersting things going on here. The funny ones are the ovious i guess. Like every one remains anonimous, not even a hint of who you are. If tijuana jailer is really leaving, i guess one of the guys who brought real insight to alot of things is leaving and that could never be a good thing.

All the other guys all the people playming that they are the shit and blah blah blah, thats good glad its all behind a PC (computer)
and not somewher where some one could really show you whats up.

the super power is not a force to be played with, (i dont drop names cause as some of you are well aware dropping names can get you into some serious shit) anyone who clamis they can run around and hide is because...they are doing just that, hidding.

Tax free is a word used for who? Last thing i recall theres alot of good barrios that dont pay umm umm taxes because some of them just have it like that aheeeeemmmm...lol

If youre PC'd and you dont pay taxes well thats a whole diff story there, your PC'd up...lol that can never be good. Sure you have alot of your homies in one yard...or even one torcida, thats great....remove those walls and all that protection you got from the state and you know your just another lame runing scared.

This blog is one of the best ive run into, dont mess it up. Keep it going, leave the woofing to other sites. I know some of you guys think youre going to scare some one with your caps lock on and shit, but believe me it aint hapening.

Keep it real, keep it respectfull like youve been taught, all that loud shit will get you nowhere.

Orale all you internet camarada's, beautiful that the veteranos put the lid on all the useless mitote we've been subjected to lately. I hope some of the plebe take it to heart as the voice of experience and consejo are invaluable and not heard enough now days.
I'm going to throw in my huesos and post up some writing from a legendary poet born and raised in LA and now difunto. I'll take the carria's but here it is.

"death is smoking my cigars"

you know I'm drunk once again here
listening to Tchaikovsky on the radio
Jesus, I heard him 47 years ago
when I was a starving writer
and here he is again
and now I am a minor success as a writer
and death is walking up and down this room
smoking my cigars
taking hits of my wine
as Tchaik is working away at the Pathetique,
it's been some journey
and any luck I"ve had was because I rolled the dice right:
I starved for my art, I starved to gain 5 god-damned minutes, 5 hours,
5 days-
I just wanted to get the word down;
fame, money, didn't matter:
I wanted the word down
and they wanted me at a punch press,
a factory assembly line
they wanted me to be a stock boy in a department store.

well, death says, as he walks by,
I'm going to get you anyhow
no matter what you've been:
writer, cab-driver, pimp, butcher,
sky diver, I'm going to get
you...

ok baby, I tell him.

we drink together now
as one a.m. slides to 2 a.m. and
only he knows the moment,
but I worked a con on him:
I got my 5 god-damned minutes
and much
more.

"The Ball Is in Your Court Now."

What if it's handball? Then we just have one court and have to share it,command it, beat our opponent into submission.Like that ancient game of jai-lai your Aztec ancestors used to play to the DEATH!

The "netbangers" play as big a part of this phenom Wally's created as do your veterano philosophers who pine for the days when disputes were settled honorably mano a mano rather than by mob justice..

I'm told there are observers of this blog fromm Europe and Asia.. All of us citizens of the planet get to read the "pulse" of the gangs, get a little insight into what entities and young minds will represent the future.. It aint pretty, and it holds little promise when you hold up, deify organized hoodlums who rule by intimidation and threats..

Tijauna Jailer described the command of the masses these few hold as being "eerie"? It is all of that.. But it's also sad that people with promise and capabilities have to waste their futures and eventually their very lives by taking the "easy road".. Hitching up, losing their individuality, and stifling whatever creativity they had.

Sabes Que? It's mostly over for vatos like me. I made my share of mistakes, paid my debts, and try to do right by my fellow man. It's a lot easier than looking over my shoulder all the time or keeping my carnals close to cover my back.. It's boring, yep all of that but I only pay taxes to the IRS and can wear whatever fuggin color I like..
Red = Cornhuskers
Blue = Jayhawks..........

Let me make one last point: I come from Italian-American extraction. I grew up listening to the old paisanos with their stories of the "old country", the Camorra, The Black Hand, and the Sicilian Mafia (though they never used those words). My point is that that whole phenom eventually fell apart. John gotti with his big mouth, and Sammy the bull with his weak heart - yada-yada-yada.The feds used the RICO and its mostly over, dead, estuvo..

This IS the future of your Eme. Believe it. Eventually it WILL come to pass...

Gava Joe,
I understand what you are saying but, to your suggestion about "THIS THING OF OURS" will turn out to be like "that thing of yours" to me is highly doubtful. See the thing that is over here started in the jails and prisons, the men who run things are already doing life and will never come home. To me it seemed like the italians were scared to go to the joint and never come home that is why they started talking. By no means do I think the thing in Cali is above that because it has already happened with guys like mundo, boxer and castro but, it is a totally different animal. The government would have to bust every Southern California gang to destroy their main power(their long arm of crime) which they will never do. The government can sentence whoever they think pulls the strings to death but, there are to many different chiefs and even if they do put them to death, how long would it take for them to be executed? By the time they are executed another indian will be groomed for that cheifs job. That is the thing about the italians oh yeah they were strong at one time but, now too many other races started muscling in on their turfs, they were not the dominant race anymore. Out on the west all there is, is RAZA we are deep and this thing over here will continue to grow and get stronger. I am not a cheerleeding I am just calling it like I see it.

This "paisa movement" as i call it...how did it come to be? My fist taste of it what when I ran into them in a fed detencion center...some one who has had more exposure plz give feed back. Thanks.

Enough with the netbanging and learn something, if you continue to fire back at obvious haters, you fall to their level. Remeber fighting out of anger will almost always lead to a loss.

im sure there are alot of people including myself :) who can bust out with some way out as stories, some will believe them some wont, some one will always claim to be harder than the next. I accept the fact that there are crasier and harder warrious out there than I am, what counts is my, or anyones, ability to evaluate the situation, make a sound determination to outwit your opponent.

We call all go on, but this will not prove anything. you are only exposing the anger that your opponent has caused you. Falling into his mind games.

Some one please give me some info on the BB....bring back the importance of this blog to some people who care for what it can teach you.

Hey - This "youngster with game" is also a youngster with sense and insight.. Thanks for the response and explanation.
You describe a situation that can only be changed, transformed, unhinged by focused determination. And the cops WO'NT do it! That's their livelihood. If gangs go away, what's a cop gonna do? Pass out balls at the PAL?
Nope it'll come from a leader whos charisma catches the masses, not a politician :) but a humanist more of a Junipero Serra rather than a Juan Pissaro....
On the lighter side: Tues signals the END of Black History month. Is anybody ready for that?

Good posts from "Gava Joe' and "Youngster with game", always a breath of fresh air with the sharing of opinions and ideas in a respectful and intelligent manner.

Both of you have excellent points in that the current situation with the "carnals" cannot be stopped or controlled very much by LE or by building more jails or metting out harsher sentencing.
And it's becoming evident to all that the power of organized crime and it's relationship to the citizens of not only Calif. and the Southwest but of the entire US has and is "metastisizing" very rapidly.
This situation cannot be blamed on any one group of people, or due to immigration, or of being some inherent genetic proclivity that people of Mexican heritage have.
The history of our country is rife with different ethnic groups being marginalized and villanized by the powers that be. The more a group of people are held down and exploited the more apt they are to develop and organize themselves for protection, or a means to support the family. Many times this entails developing hustles and scams, and "flying under the radar".
I'm not making excuses or trying to glorify what is happening today in the joints and in the streets, this has been going on for a long time and people are still naive to think that this situation is only recent and confined to the prisons.
As "Gava Joe" relates to us, the economic growth of the "Italian Americans" legitimately, corresponds directly to the demise of the old "Dago Mafia" groups. This has happened with the "Irish", "Jews", "Italians" and also the "Chinese".
My family including myself grew up around many Italian/Sicilian families for generaations, and everyone knew who was "connected" back when. But the offspring of those old "Mustache Pete's" have all been educated and I don't know of any who have followed into a life of crime. Most of them are almost "Pussy like" in thier demeanor.
This has also happened with the offspring of many Mexican American gangsters as economics has brought opportunities for change. (Ask someone like "Tijuas" how many LE officers are connected by blood to "Chicano and Dago gangsters"),
We as a society have a real choice in the rapidity of the decline or growth of the "Mexican American" organized crime situation. We can either build more prisons, legislate harsher more draconian laws and sentencing, (which very clearly has not worked!)or we can pull together as one people and spend the same "penal" moneys to try and alleviate the root causes of our current predicament, (which we all know a lot about but fight over how to remedy),
One thing is certain to me, and that is if nothing is done except to attempt to ignore the root causes of our current situation, then there will be hell to pay in the very near future.

HAHAHHAHHAA after a beautiful piece of work by Don Quixote you got some funny stuff like this HAHAHAHHA this blog reflects all sides of human personality. This is why I never get tired of it, from T.J., Retired Joker and Quixote's insight to anonymous surenos and northenos throwing shit back and forth and the guys saying that the net banging is getting old, thinking they will be able to stop it. This is all human nature that is found in the street. O.G.'s who been through it and respect it, youngsters going through it with knowledge but, still alot of rage and the people on the sideline that are interested but, can't understand it. Wanting to get close but, not be burned or be "bunched in" with "my kind of people".

Wow, so many posts that the original post has been forgotten, I believe it read, "Its Over", as you can see by the posts, its far from being over.
This here Familiano Vs. Carnal thing will never end.
La Eme does greatly outnumber the NF in the CDC but will never be able to eliminate all of them simply because of their seperation.
Its hard to take out all your enemires when you are seperated from them.
So this thing will go on and on. As long as there a vatos doing life and don't give a fuck they will be doing whatever it takes to survive and thrive in the pinta.
I guess vatos need to net bang to get it out of their systems since Nortenos in Nor Cal never get to talk to Surenos from So Cal.
The Surenos up north don't speak english and the nortneos don't speak spanish, so they never talk.

Before all my fellow norteno's start yelling at me saying they speak spanish, thats fine, but the majority of Nortenos don't speak spanish. Only at home talking to their abuelita but never in public for fear that someone will think they are a Sureno.

Will the amount of Paisas moving to the bay area, the Sur Vs. Norte war up there is gettin crazy.
Down here there is a lot of sureno on sureno violence, up north its pretty rare, for norteno on norteno violence, not to say it doesn't happen. Also the hoods in the bay area are more spread out than in L.A. where every block seems to have a differnt clicka or set.
I heard a young norteno got shanked at the oldies show at the Shark Tank in San Jose a couple of weeks ago by another norteno which was a dispute over some hyna.
So hey, that makes the NF and La Eme happy to know they have wannabes on the calles ready to step up and do some dirty work.
I wanna ask you southsiders if you ever seen or spoken to a "Paisa"
sureno that lives up north? I heard when they visit L.A. the Southersiders laugh at them and don't give them respect also, how are they looked at when they enter the CDC system?

San Quentin prison on lockdown after racially charged riot
Associated Press
SAN QUENTIN, Calif. - A racially motivated riot that broke out at San Quentin State Prison left one inmate injured and prompted officials to place about 1,800 prisoners on lockdown.
About 40 Hispanic and black inmates began fighting around 1 p.m. Saturday in the exercise yard following a cultural event marking the end of Black History Month, officials said.
Prison spokesman Vernell Crittendon called it a "planned assault" by the Hispanic prisoners. One inmate was injured, and at least four homemade weapons were found.
"We did have one inmate who had been struck in the eye with either a punch or a kick," Crittendon told KCBS.
The lockdown in the prison's general population was expected to last through Monday morning, when officials planned to begin inmate interviews to find out what caused the riot, Crittendon said.
Earlier this month, 16 inmates at San Quentin were injured during a riot involving more than 80 prisoners in the dining hall. Officials said they believed the incident began when Hispanics affiliated with the "Nortenos" gang attacked a rival group of black prisoners.

BTW, that last article about the riot was posted today, so it probably happenend over the weekend.

Retired Joker asks " have you guys ever met a paisa from up north that was a sureno?
Yea Joker there was a bunch of them I met at Terminal Island Fed joint who had familia in the Sacramento and Stockton area. They were bonaroo vatos from the LA area who were respected and well liked by the Chicanos from LA. Most were hooked up with the drug families in Mexico and did business with the Carnals all over Ca.
What you may be describing is a younger generational thing where location is what matters, but in the tight Chicano/Mexicano old time drug negocios those regional rivalries don't necessarily apply.
I used to have a kid 20 or 21 years old working for me who was a stone sureno and who moved up to the Napa Valley area with his familia and who got in all kinds of pedo with the local nortenos almost immediately.
He caught so much heat that he moved back to the LA area, and unfortunately within a couple of months was shot in the face point blank by a 14 year old kid, sureno wannabee legend packing a 45 auto making his bones for the varrio.
Good kid, sad legacy
hope this helps.

Greetings to all ..... Retired Joker (first) since you were being "brutalized" there for a bit, Don Quixote, Gava Joe and all the "groupies" from Wally's World. Looks like the Blog went through quite an "ordeal" with the brown vs. black skirmishes, north vs. south dialogue and much subject matter to address and revisit.

Great insight on the REAL stuff that goes on in San Jo and other places. First of all, RJ, let's not forget that Surenos are merely FODDER for imprisoned and paroled EME "made" members. Some are held in much higher esteem than others but for every Sureno who is being considered for membership, there are easily over a hundred that would NEVER be considered. Why? Because they are not EME "material".
The EME made members I came in contact with (either "friendlies" or "active") had a completely different demeanor about them and were many notches above the mainline street gang member. So many people confuse a made EME member (only a few hundred active members even exist) with Surenos. They are NOT interchangeable. They will make a Sureno feel as if he is a "part of their family" but that is not reality.
Their "use" of Surenos to further their control over La Raza is exactly that: pure exploitation.
The "use" of Surenos to perpetuate friction vs. Blacks is exactly that: pure exploitation.
The run-of-the mill Sureno (multiple tens of thousands if not more) would love to elevate their relationship with EME and will feel slighted at my comments (a shower of expletives is expected) but the reality remains that the STATUS of a street gang member is vastly enhanced by his position as a "higher ranking" EME associate.
Those that serve a bigger purpose for La EME will obviously be protected to a higher degree because they are less expendable and "more useful". Those who are less useful become more expendable and the L.A., San Bernardino, San Diego and other So. Cal Coroner's Offices will attest to the expendability of many Surenos who must have an "expiration date" stamped on them!
So all those street gangsters and aspiring EME members better realize one wise proverb: many are called but few are chosen. And, if you know too much, you will be called .... called to "go for a ride".
The same thing can be said for their counterparts up North. If this polarization continues (i.e., Norte vs. Sur) to escalate, it will outgrow the reality of what the Chicano streets really are: The reality is, Chicanos all come from the "same plant" and when Mexican immigrants decided to migrate to L.A., Salinas, Fresno, Chicago, San Jose or Albuquerque, there was no magical sorting system that placed the meanest gangsters in So. Cal and the lamest in, say Lamont, California.
The difference is called "life's experiences". Because L.A. is considered the Street Gang capital of the U.S. with it's traditional decades upon decades of gang rivalries and street gang "expertise", that doesn't exclude other cities who are "learning" this behavior. As the heat intensifies, the positive role model is replaced by the negative role model who is then treated (and I quote a former EME) "better than a war hero" in his community! He is deified and all these kids want to be "like Mike". "Juvie", camp, CYA, and then the California Department of Corrections.
One Comment I read is something I have discussed with past and present colleagues. As RJ states, Surenos will never "eliminate" Nortenos. That surely goes without saying. EME has more of a desire/intention of eventually "overseeing" (politically correct term for Control) the drug and illicit operations of the entire state of Northern California. Look at the map of Cali .... Can you believe that the area south of Bakersfield is about 25% of California? Yet the population of So Cal is much more than Nor Cal. As a previous commenter stated, it is more plausible to see an "EME Anti-Christ emerge" to consolidate the street "talents" of the state than to see this North-South war continue endlessly. That would be a LE nightmare because this would mean we are fighting one big System of Crime headed by a few "wolves" who would make life for the Chicano street member a "gangster heaven". It may not happen tomorrow but stay tuned ................. and don't be surprised.

More to come ..... I'm still unpacking ........ glad to see the Blog "growing" ...... kids will be kids and that's what happens when a family grows - you get all these little "crumb snatchers" craving our attention. Stick a bottle in their snout and continue with the business at hand.

Peace ...............

the art of war isnt to annihilate your enemy, but to submit them to your will. so the eme may not kill every norteno, but they can offer a truce where the north becomes part of a califas thing. of course the eme will have to kill some terminology in lieu of more appealing and face saving jargon. Where the north may not join the sureno nation, they may a join a gang called califasos or some shit like that. It would allow either side a way out without admitting defeat to the surenos or nortenos. believe or not, ' WORDS HAVE ALOT OF POWER.

on a different note, alot paisas in the bay area who bang don't even claim sureno. they fued with surenos and nortenos alike. I guess someone told them they had enough numbers to do their own thing. and they do...

The "Border Brothers." are mainly found in the California Prison system but are slowly finding there way to the Nevada Prison System. According to sources, the BB are rapidly becoming the fastest growing and largest of the Hispanic gangs in the Nevada prison system. Most BB are undocumented Mexican immigrants whose contacts reach back to Mexico and to the streets in the United States. Most BB are in prison for drug offenses Using their contacts, they continue to sell narcotics inside the prison wall.
The Sinaloa Cowboys are a sub group of the BB. These gang members usually are all from the Mexican State of Sinaloa, which is considered to be the drug capital of Mexico. In Mexico, the Sinaloa Cowboys are known to be the enforcers for the many drug cartels in Mexico.
Tattoos that may be found on BB members include, Border Brothers, BB, or BB 22 (2 represents the 2nd letter of the alphabet - 22=BB). They may also have the name of their home or birth state in Mexico.

Northern California gang members in LA EME ........

Because of the lines being drawn between the North and the South, these loyal disciples have become so blinded by this rivalry, whose flame has been fanned by the Prison Gangs, that we fail to realize some historical truths.

First, I have already covered that the Founding Fathers of the Nuestra Familia were Southern California gang members. Now I read sites where "Joe Blow from San Jose" or "Juan Doe from Stockton" were the Founders. Leave it to the spin doctors to concoct.

Now, with regard to the EME myth about it's first members being former Surenos and such. Many of the hardcore longstanding and charter members were also from Northern Cal AND from Maravilla. For all you Maravilla fan club members, your deadliest soldados did in fact join La EME.

But let's start with Northern Cal.
Mike "Acha" Ison - (Currently Deceased) Dubbed Hatchet Mike and Killer Mike. He hailed from San Francisco and was one of EME's most influential leaders in their initial stages;
Abraham "Abie" Hernandez - Currently in circulation somewhere in the U.S., was dubbed "Ice Pick" and was from Sacramento.
Ramon "Tuffy" Torres - Early member from San Jose who is depicted in that famous 1969 Folsom pic which was used in American Me cast;
David "Davi" Perez - Also from San Francisco, was involved in several 187's;
Martin "Kato" Vargas - Fresno member who is as deadly as they come, currently active and in and out of the federal prison system;
Gilbert Santistevan - From the Hayward area. Gil and his brothers were instrumental in the running of heroin and cocaine in that area for several years;
There are several more that had roots in Nor Cal so I hope this dispels the myth that NO EME could be from anyplace other than So. Cal.

More to come .......

Peace,

ok here's what i know about BB.

Maybe 15-20 years ago 99 percent of the nortenos and surenos were chicanos , or american born children of immigrants. If you were from mexico and went to prison, you were expected to stay nuetral in north/south conflicts but assist the raza when shit kicked along racial lines. If you were from mexico and tried to claim sureno or norteno, you would be called a plastico or fake by the nortenos, surenos, and mexicans. It was frowned upon to not have been raised in your hood and bang.

anyways, somwhere in the mid eighties, 18 street opened their membership to guys fresh from mexico where other LA gangs didnt. some got deported, infatuated the kids over in mexico with war stories and a trend was born. most of these fresh immigrants will get smashed by real nortenos or surenos and opt out because they are mostly bumpkins and not hardcore villians.

now, the vatos who chose to remain nuetral from the north/south pedo have realized that they have alot of numbers too. now they take sides in the north south conflict, it usually depends on what prison they are at. I believe they are siding with the nortenos in corcoran. (these are border brothers and not the wannabe surenos alot of you see around)

thats about all i know, oh yeah, they're alot stronger in nevada than california

Lots of "shaking going on" in the AB case and not looking too good for the U.S. Attorney's office. This is what happens when you rely on "unorganized prosecution". The information is there but the prosecutors fail to put the puzzle together. We'll see and if I'm proven wrong, I'll eat my Steelers cap!
John Stinson: AKA "Youngster" with much game (no offense to our own Youngster With Game) emerged into the AB picture in the late-1970's. He was a "road dog" (running partner on the outside) and crime partner of EME's Daniel "Cuate" Grajeda. His first documented hit was committed in 1978 in San Quentin's North Block. The victim was an EME associate-gone-sour by the name of Baldemar "Blackie" Garcia from the King Kobras barrio of East Los Angeles. Youngster" and two AB bros ("J.C." Carpenter and "Big Lurch" Burch) were the principal assailants who took him out.
"Youngster" was not charged and was paroled in about 1978 where he was "allegedly" responsible for the street execution of one of the AB's Founding Fathers, one Jack "Red" Mahone. During this period, "Youngster" and David "Smooth" Lewis robbed a dope connection in L.A. for $65,000 and proceeded to send $100 money orders to all AB members and friends in San Quentin.
"Youngster" was present in the L.A. County Jail in 1979 when EME's Gilbert "Chaparro" Ruiz was stabbed and beaten to death by EME soldiers Art "Conejo" Blajos, Daniel "Cuate" Grajeda and others. According to eyewitness accounts, "Youngster" was squatting next to his cup of coffee enjoying a conversation with two EME members when Youngster turned slightly and observed Conejo approaching him with a "knotted towel" - a garrot. Youngster's eyes widened as his initial reaction was that Conejo was coming for him. Instead, Conejo placed a finger to his mouth (indicating be quiet) and he proceeded to "drop the collar" around Chaparro's neck. He was then stabbed by Cuate and beaten to death, his body positioned next to a drain in which his blood oozed into. The joke for the following two weeks was how "Youngster" had beheld the Grim Reaper and was "passed over".
Sorry I cannot get into "Youngster's" NLR ties due to lack of information. Stick to the older stuff ......;--)

Fix that lemonade, Sancha, and I'll be back with your "fix".

Peace .......

9:54 PM (Isn't that a bit late to be fixing lemonade?)

It's in the "eyes", Sancha, the damn eyes! The best characteristic in describing your typical EME member is "Supreme Arrogance".

Picture a mad scientist, wide eyed and full of hate who does NOT look "at" you but instead "through" you. This is the lost soul of a made EME member. He sits in his laboratory (SHU or Super Max) and concocts his deadly poison with seemingly not a worry nor a concern in the world. The playground is 1)the general lockup unit where he resides, 2)the general prison population of the prison where he resides, 3)the other prisons where other carnales are kept up to date with "hit orders" and other instructions on how to conduct business there via Sureno "flunkies", 4)the outside where gang members run amok.

Perpetuating the madness is part and parcel of their desire for Full Control. What exactly is Full Control? (Ask Satan the same question and the answer is: "still to be determined").
There is no predetermined rhyme or reason to their madness except that "the chips will fall in place" somehow after the bodies are counted.
What I'm saying is that yesterday it sufficed to run a prison, then several prisons, then they took their act to the streets of L.A. and any city that could not "handle" their influence. Now that sphere of influence and control has truly expanded and is in a constant state of fluctuation due to law enforcement efforts and other factors. But they are like cochroaches ..... everywhere.

Yes, most of the EME carnales are "older" (average age of made members is in their 40's) with many in their 50's and 60's. Their "orders" are more general rather than specific with an emphasis on getting the bottom line met: collection of taxes, drug revenues and similar EME related business that takes priority over a drive-by by Little Valley into say, Hoyo Maravilla. As the kettle continues to boil, EME "mad scientists" add to the concoction and confusion prevails and "business" is conducted in the midst of the confusion. It's like being on a prison yard ........ fistfights erupt in several locations and while the guards rush to the flash points, the "real" target is being taken out. The EME thrives in midst of such confusion.

The Supreme Arrogance I speak of is not only in their eyes but in their ATTITUDE. The active member fears no one and (quote) they consider themselves bulletproof (end quote). If you observe him in a street or jail setting, his subjects (Surenos) follow him as if he were a Prophet. At a neighborhood function, they are given the Red Carpet treatment; at nightclubs and restaurants they frequent, they are treated with respect and fear.

In prison, they have been described "like Moses parting the sea". This is why today ALL identified EME members cannot walk a general prison population's mainline. Their immediate overseeing of illicit activities would be like a kid in a candy store. The alternative is to lock them up. An old EME proverb which we have seen on birthday cards they exchange amongst one another is: "You can control my body but you can't control my soul."

Any wise observer, whether you live in the Chicano communities or are a trained cop or prison guard will immediately identify an EME member vs. a run-of-the-mill Sureno. As I say this I can state that some of the hardcore Surenos (I mean vicious bangers) are so "highly placed" as front line EME associates that LE often has a hard time distinguishing them from made members!

NF members undoubtedly have a similar relationship with their Norteno "subjects". AB members surely have white boys that don't approach their standard, BGF likewise as the average loud mouth black 'banger would be looked upon with disapproval.

Sparse rhetoric is another great description for these super hardcore dudes. Of course, EME enjoys a much larger gang base to tap into, as Don Quixote aptly states.

As for respect for the Veteranos, well that's the Catch-22 of programs like Operation Hardcore (L.A. District Attorney's Office). Their targeted base was indeed the leaders of the street gangs and that left the foot soldiers to run helter skelter! What do you do, leave the leaders out there to maintain "control"? I suppose it all comes back to the Family. The Positive role models must replace the Tony Montanas (in the movie "Scarface") of the world.

Sancha, just remember the Mad Scientist picture and that's your EME heavyweight, forever confined seeking only to perpetuate the madness and you have a sneak preview. The wannabe can be extremely dangerous (because he's making his bones) but the Predator is unmistakably recognizable to the trained eye.

Peace ........

From my LE sources, NLR, hands down. While I refer to California's "axis of evil" as the Big Four - EME, AB, BGF and NF, (remember, I'm an older fart)
many prison gang investigators now talk about the Big Five (NLR now being included).

YOU ACT LIKE YOUR TRYING TO PIT THE SOUTH AGAINST THE BROTHERHOOD!..LOL!!

OK, I'll bite. The truth can set a man free. If he chooses to recognize what is really going on,
the "vida loca", taken to that ultimate extreme, will bring death.
An Adult can indeed make his choice and live with the consequences. It's not like we're children here and don't know right from wrong.

I don't need to "pit the South vs the EME". Just listen to the pleas of your babies, your mothers, sisters and brothers and your loving wives. If you wish to contribute to the stable of "battered women" (mentioned earlier) then do your thing, tough guy. Only I would like to view a video of your "performance" in the visitig room when you are "explaining" how you screwed up to your loved ones. Do I wish this scenario on you or your type? No, never do I wish to see more victims in this world of madness.
But those of you who choose to walk that walk should be big enough and man enough to advise the youngsters to refrain from this lifestyle and threaten their asses with big bodily harm.
If this is your world, don't cause the youngsters to "inherit" your doom; don't force your wives to "inherit" your destiny. Be a man and live your gangster life without dragging your loved ones into the mess.

what about us third and second generation gang members our family (blood family) is our gang, so no disrespect tj but thats bullshit, all that i want to see your video in the visiting room, tough guy shit, after you see your brother get shot and killed a couple of cousind get killed the same way, the visiting room aint shit. blame it on the varrio or blamed it on irresponsible parents, but beside this blog away from this computer is some real life shit going on, and I dont take away anything from these vatos out here who are dumb and tough guys something is definately wrong within the culture of our chicano communities, and its sad but its real

TijuanaJailer said...

(after you see your brother get shot and killed a couple of cousind get killed the same way)

Two wrongs don't make a right.
Vengeance begets vengeance begets vengeance. The criminal lifestyle has NOTHING to do with ethnic culture. It has ALL to do with criminal culture.

Forget the dirty cops that are out there but wouldn't you rather be in a position to "make a difference" by helping your community in the capacity of a police officer by upholding the law rather than breaking it?

The real criminals look for justification for their criminal actions rather than ways to overcome it. If my brother and cousin get shot I may wish to get revenge (in my anger) but it only begets more victims and it doesn't bring my brother or cousin back from the dead.

Breaking that vicious cycle has to end somewhere, dude. I never suggested it would be easy.

I agree with you that it is easier to disect what you call the REAL world on a computer eating my Planters Cashews and drinking Welch's Grape Juice (good for the heart, they say), but a little food for thought never hurts.
Especially if it stimulates honest introspection.
Reality is also knowing how to break that gangster cycle. It has happened soooo many times and it will happen in your family as well if you or others with fortitude (huevos) make it happen. The ball is in your court and you call the shots. It is always your decision to make.

I do wish your family the best in getting away from the madness.

Peace .......

damn thats was very enlightening, anon I see where your coming from and tj that is the best to put what you wrote, i understand, damn thats some real stuff right there, yea its too bad you dont get to pick your parents in life, or where you are born, but yea you gotta stand up for yourself

Hey TJ good shit today ese, it shows how a person can share good info "but" as usuall you drifted off into the ol' good samaritan shit. I can agree with you on the shit about the bad kid riding his own beef and shit thats a universal fact that should'nt take any telling to those in the life.
But when you drift off into the parent bullshit thats a tuff one to take. Let me qualifiy my statement, While yes its ture some parents are bad at thier job we must look at the full picture in order to really get a better view of the current state of caca we're in. I'm at the half century mark of my life, and bare many of the battle scars of my youth, both phyical and emotional. When my parents came here from Mexico they quickly became aware of the prejuidice that was waiting for them, But my father was not to be deined his dream. He quickly got employment and begun what he started in Mexico, taking care of his familiy. At a young age I was quickly taught to be diligent in school and respectful to all those in authority. I was told that I would be taught in school to become a good person and achive all that I wish. But whao' there pard, as soon as I hit school the shit started, frist it was the teachers those denisens of education and achivement, yeah right puro fucken pedo. Each and every teacher I had was always quick to point out how lucky I was that I was in a country that held such high asteem for it's imagriants [after all we're a melting pot]. Forget the fact that they stole this country from it's orginal peoples and that she and all other palefaces were the fucken imagriants here. And as I grew up cheering for the lone ranger and the texas lawmen and all that tv shit as did many others of my generation. But as I was rounding JHS in the mid to late 60's and,
"CHICANO AWARENESS" was beginging to emerage throughout Califorina and reaching it's youth. I had begun to see just how much of that american dream was really meant for me. And as the Texas Rangers did way back when, so to all of LE today. My frist encounter was at age 11 or 12 I and some freinds were walking home from playing baseball at a nieghborhood park must have been a round 8ish and as we walked a group of 5 kids mocosos if you will and a threat to no one except maybe a make believe pitch from one of the other kids. When all of a sudden in a split second we were circled by the man, the placa the "authority" figures we had been taught to obey. As in a scene from the old cowboy days they begun with their shit. The frist cop walks up and starts in with his shit, What are you beaners doing here, what a puto if you could ony feel how my insides turned as this fat fuck with his pale white pug face spat out his shit at us, 12 yr. olds. The next cop walked up to me and his shit was really raw you could tell he was a rookie as his almost teenage face exploded with anxouisness to get in on the play. He looked at me and said as he stood on my toes and twisted his flat foot on them, I better never catch you on my street again. What a fuck! Anyway that shit never gets told when someone looks to blame shit, as did chief gates when in a public conference to the media back in the 80's or 70's said with a wide brush, these "sons of bitches" refering to some gangsters, how did he know if their mothers were unatentive to them he just shot his mouth off like some puto trying to affix his prejudice to someone. So how I ask "you" is any youngster going to make it when everything is toss at his or her feet or that their parents feet. Theres much more to the shit then that ol' woren out excuse.

What a treat to have Tijuanero laying down the word on this blog! He is without a doubt a jura "shotcaller" and "big homie" in his field and experience. Listen and learn!
One thing I might take issue with though, respectfully, is the description of the look one might see on a "Mero Homie's" face and as Tijuas describes as "the look of a mad scientist, wide eyed and full of hate".
The carnals and associates that I have known, and I knew many, being raised in the birthplace and womb of this now infamous group, and one that "Mundo Mendoza" so perfectly describes "a completely abnormal social value system was established".
The look of a mad scientist, full of hate would be considered a sign of weakness in my generations modus operandi, rather an appearance of complete disregard and oblivious to any pain or suffering by a victim would be more respected. All business, no conscience, no weakness, cruel was good, and as Tijuas stated "arrogance" but without the appearance of arrogance.
This may be hard or confusing to picture or understand but a whole lot of schooling and education was required to attain this lack of emotion. It was considered indulgent, to display this kind of outburst. (wild eyed or mad dogging)
More admirable would be to smile or laugh with one's victim before the coup d' etat.
Mundo Mendoza was definitely a feared killer, but besides his "rolling over", I'm sure many in upper echelon would say that he got weak because he didn't start out "young enough", wasn't schooled substantially in all the facets of a vato loco's upbringing. He got into a Varrio when he was 19, he didn't go to juvie or get his streets schooling until his mid to late teens.

Let me give you a typical example of what I am talking about using myself as an example, trying not to appear as bragging or talking shit as it's not something to be proud of, but only to enhance the knowledge of how this "abnormal social system" came about. And I shared this upbringing with many who are now using this background to gain and consolidate even more power.

Lincloln Hts 1955, 10 years old, oldest of 7, Father and Mother 26 years old, 2 bedroom shack,no screens broken windows, open hole in the ground in the back used as a cesspool, old clothes, old shoes,no breakfast, no lunch, no money, no oversight, constant daily humiliations due to poverty and a Darwinian upbringing of survival.
Education mainly consists of elementary school and street education, stealing, scamming, shinning shoes, selling newspapers on the street, begging, salvaging food, rolling drunks,.
10 yrs old and a typical saturday. Get up early check out the neighborhood cloths lines for clothes that fit, steal em, then go to the bushes on the hill and chose which one of the 5 or 10 stolen bikes stashed to use that day, ride to 5 points, go into the Thrifty Drug Store lunch counter, sit where someone left most of the plate of food, eat it, ask for water, when the waitress turns, steal the tips. Go to the bank of phone booths, stuff paper napkins into coin slots,(at the end of the day always a few dimes stuck). Check out the store manager, if he's gone, steal starting at the cash register, you and homeboys go out front, someone pretend to steal change from the retarded newsmans cigar box, when he gives chase someone steal his cigar box and run.
12 or 13 yrs. ganged up already, been in Juvie 3 or 4 times and don't give a fuck, looking for respect from the camaradas and especially the veteranos who share wine, mota, and sometimes even a cotton if someone has a homemade outfit, already a veteran of a thousand street fights that we look forward to. All packing fileros and looking for a chance to use em. Stealing cars, hitting the coin machines, doing street robberies, a thousand hustles being learned and used.
Going to parties in other varrios looking for chingaso's. Best is when we are outnumbered, and still make a stand, getting rat packed and fucked up,sometimes someone is stabbed or kicked senseless, "Kiko got his ear chopped off with a hatchet that Tweedy from Aves hit him with", "Chief hit Magoo from Hazard with a brick and knocked him out cold, then he cut his eyebrows off with a razor, He's a bad motherfucker!", "Did you hear? they found Mando from Diamond dead over on Solano St. hanging over a fence, the vato's from Dogtown did it.
After years of this "education" the cream would rise to the surface and these vatos who had been schooled in the streets, since little kids, and already veterans of countless fights, crimes, scams, dealing, jails, jura's, were carefully observed and as an Alpha Male Wolf takes control of his pack naturally so to do certain Carnals attain thier status and this is based on not just a cold demeanor, willingness to kill coldly without emotion, but intelligence and being skilled in spotting human frailty's, emotional or physical weakness, confusion, or lack of ferociousness in an opponent.

Hopefully some insight from yours trully.

WOW, Don, I just read all that and still don't see what your point is.
The big difference with back then and now is fools get blasted and die. Not some pinche eyebrow being cut off and brick to the head.
fuck all that product of my environment and bad parenting shit.
It takes real balls to try and end the cycle of gang life. Anyone can blame it on the parents or the varrio sucking them in and they have no other options.
Puro pedo! This is america, ese. You have choices everyday. The real hard core men with the big huevos are the ones to try to make it out of the varrio life and provide for themselves and their familia. Graduatinf College is alot tougher than slanging chiva on the calles.

For many years I was misguided and ram amok like some kind of crazed animal, used heroin for 25 years, didn't have to get "jumped" into the barrio for I was born in, being that my familia had been around since about 1916. My father, brothers and sisters were all heroin addicts so were all the people who hung around the hood, so naturally I wanted to be just like them. Hanging out in front of the liquor store all smack-back seemed like a nice occupation to me. Well I suceeded in being the best bato loco I could be, spent alot of childhood and adult years locked up, met alot of good people, and had a hell of a good time, along with alot of bad times, brother and sister OD'd (dead) another brother shot and killed, another brother dead from alcohol, and alot of the other good people I came across during my vida loca are dead, doing life, some are PC'd up others are still good, some are made batos, the ones that are still around are either winitos or at the methadone program. Thats what a vida loca will get you. But do I want that for my kids and grandkids? HELL NO!! So little carnalitos wake up once you choose that life, remember its blood in/blood out. I wish you all the best, but stay in school, make your jefitos proud. But in the end everyone has to make there own decisions then live with them.

THAT SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING THAT WOULD PROBABLY WORK BACK IN THE OLD DAYS,BUT IN A WAY YOU MAKE SENSE,BUT WHEN YOUR IN THIS SIDE OF THE TRACKS IT'S A DIFFERENT STORY!!MANY ANTI GANG OFFICERS HAVE TOLD ME THEMSELVES,THAT ONCE YOUR IN A GANG OR ASSOCIATE WITH A GANG,YOUR GOING TO JAIL PERIOD!THERE JOB ISNT TO PREVENT OR HELP GANG MEMBERS,THEY GOT TO DO IT THEMSELVES,BUT THEY FORGET ONE THING,WE LIVE IN THE VARRIO.....
GANGSTER OR NOT!EVERYONE IS RELATED TO SOMEONE FROM THE HOOD ONE WAY OR ANOTHER! IF NOT! ATLEAST
THEY ARE ASSOCIATED BY MEANS OF JUST PLAIN KNOWING THEM!!AND WHEN THOSE ANTI GANG UNITS ROLE IN THEY TRY TO USE THE STRONG ARM OF THE LAW!!AND FOR EVERYTIME THESE OFFICERS COME IN OUR NEIGHBORHOODS
AND HARRASSS PEOPLE,PEOPLE SEE AND BUILT A BIG DISTRUST TOWARDS LAW ENFORCEMENT,AND OUR KIDS ARE STEREOTYPED CONSTANTLY BY THE POLICE!THEY ARE EVEN LOGGED AS GANGMEMBERS JUST SO THEY CAN JUSTIFY THE EXTRA KICK THEY PUT IN YOUR ASS!AND THATS FOR REALS!!
ITS REALITY!SO IF THE COPS DONT GIVE A FUCK!DO YOU THINK A VATO WITH KNOWLEDGE IS GOING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?ALL THEM PEOPLE ARE LOCKED UP,BACK IN THE DAY LE TOOK THEM ALL AWAY,THINKING IT WOULD REDUCE GANG VIOLENCE,AHAAHA!!BOY WERE THEY WRONG!!EVERY LIL VATO DID SHIT THEIR OWN WAY AND THE STREETS REALLY GOT OUT OF HAND!NOW
I SEE THE SAME THING HAPPENING AGAIN!WE ARE GOING BACK TO THE EARLY AND MID 90'S!WHEN IT WAS A TIME WHEN SHIT WAS REALLY POPPING OFF!SO TO SAY POLICE SHOULD FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE,IS WRONG!AND TWO WRONGS DONT MAKE A RIGHT!!
AND ANOTHER THING!!THAT SHIT ABOUT WOMENS SHELTER...MAN YOU GUYS DONT THINK!JUST FAST TO CRITISIZE,YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT THE BROTHERS USE AND ABUSE SURENOS?LOL!!YOUR SADLY MISTAKEN!!THE ONLY WAY TO EVEN GET CLOSE TO A BRO IS BY BEING IN THE JOINT,SO IF YOUR IN THERE?WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU?NOBODY FROM IN THERE ASKED YOU TO JOIN A GANG...AND THE ONLY WAY TO BECOME OR ASSOCIATE WITH CERTAIN PEOPLE IS TO BE A GANGMEMBER,RIGHT?
SO C'MON!!I NEVER KNEW THAT BEING IN A GANG WAS SUCH AN INNOCENT THING!!SOMEBODY TELL THE HUDAS SO THEY CAN GO PUNK THE ROCKERS!!LOL!!
THOSE ROCKERS WEAR TIGHT PANTS AND HAVE THEIR HAIR IN THEIR FACE!HMMM?
I ALWAYS KNEW THEY WERE UP TO SOMETHING!!..LOL!! BUT WITH ALL SERIOUSNESS,I RESPECT EVERYONES POINT OF VIEW,BUT I STILL STAND BY MIND!!IT'S NOT THAT SOMEONE IS EXPLOITTING THESE VATOS,CAUSE THERE IS THOUSANDS OF MORE DONT RAISE THEIR HAND,AND THEY CO-EXIST
WITHIN THE SOUTHSIDE AND IN PRISONS WITHOUT PROBLEMS,IT'S JUST THOSE FEW THAT START SOMETHING THEY CANT FINISH IT,THEY TRY TO HARD TO BE SOMETHING THEY ARE NOT!
OR THEY GET BUSTED AND TURN,GIVE A SAD STORY AND PEOPLE ARE QUICK TO BUY IT!...AND THE LAST REASON WOULD BE,A LACK OF RESPECT!YOU GO IN WAY OVER YOUR HEAD!AND FORGET THE LINES AND BOUNDARIES OF RESPECT AND MORALITY,THEY FUCK UP SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY!LIKE IN EL MONTE,THAT WAS OVERKILL LIKE SOMEONE MENTIONED BEFORE!AND LOOK WHAT HAPPENED,BUT TO SAY AND BLAME PEOPLE FROM A CERTAIN DEGREE IS WRONG,WE MUST BLAME OURSELVES....
PARENTS,SCHOOLING,COMUNITY AND POLICE!!...EVERYONE HAS A LIL BLAME AND ALL TOGETHER CAN SAVE OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS,NOT ENTIRELY
BUT A GOOD AMOUNT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE....WELL THATS MY OPINION
AND HEY YOU GUYS! GO TO THE SOUTH GATE EDWARDS THEATRE,SEE A MOVIE
CALLED "DIRTY!"THIS SHIT IS BETTER THAN TRAINING DAY!THEY HIT THE BULLSEYE ON THIS ONE....IVE HEARD SOME WILD SHIT,BUT I NEVER THOUGHT THEY WOULD MAKE A MOVIE WITH SUCH
REALITY!..CUBA GOODING JR. IS GOING TO JAIL FOR THIS ONE!...LOL!!
THE POE POE IS GONNA BE MAD!!....

AND THIS IS ALSO FOR YOU...
WHEN THE BROS SAID NO MORE DRIVE BYE'S....DO YOU THINK THAT SOME LIVES MIGHT OF BEEN SPARED?
EVEN THOUGH THE POLICE TRIED TO KNOCK IT BUY SAYING IT HAD OTHER MEANS,BUT YOU KNOW THAT THE VIOLENCE DID DROP DRAMATICALLY!
AND WITH THEM DOING THAT,DO YOU THINK THAT IT HELPED KEEP THE MURDER RATE AT A LOW SCALE FOR A TIME?IS ANY REASON EVER GOOD ENOUGH, JUST AS LONG AS THESE KIDS STOP KILLING EACH OTHER?

HOLLENBECK RESIDENT!

(So how I ask "you" is any youngster going to make it when everything is toss at his or her feet or that their parents feet. Theres much more to the shit then that ol' woren out excuse.)

Precisely, by not making excuses and taking it to a higher level. For every "homie" who came from a dysfunctional situation I can cite (and so can you) even more siblings of these same homies who made the correct choices and became productive citizens.

I think what you and Don Q are citing are the "reasons" that some barrio raised people become gangsters. Understood. That doesn't excuse criminal behavior but it allows an understanding of it. Should one be sympathetic?
... ok, I'll say yes. Should one be understanding .... certainly. Should the perp be responsible for his/her actions? Absolutely.
And the mistakes of those who yielded to peer pressure, who yielded to the dysfunctional life in their youth allows us to understand and hopefully "prevent" a subsequent generation from duplicating these errors.

But to ever condone criminal behavior in the name of victimization is not right and most sane individuals would have to agree that we can never condone such conduct.

Don Q said: (The look of a mad scientist, full of hate would be considered a sign of weakness in my generations modus operandi,)

First off, Don Quixote, your assessment of the EME that you encountered in your youth is 150% right on. These dudes are cold as ice, stoic, never betray their intentions, smile at you while leading you to the slaughter, have complete disregard for authority and have no concept of what it means to show weakness. Cool operators in the midst of a hail storm, you might say.

But the picture I was trying to draw for Sancha was the picture of the "Boogeyman". I pictured vatos like "Alfie" Sosa (a genuine nut case), "Tupie" Hernandez, and other extreme dudes who are interested only in seeing more and more bloodshed. Benjamin "Topo" Peters was another one who wielded tremendous clout and wanted bloodletting and then some. So now you've got Sancha digging out her hanky and listening to the violin!

Sancha, where's my lemonade!? If you listen to Don Q you'll be embracing the Father Flannigan theory: "there's no such thing as a bad boy". Mundo (in his foreward) similarly states: "no one is born a criminal".

Again, while no one disputes that EVERY bad guy has a mother, father and loved ones out there, we can't forget the VICTIMS. They are on the shitty end of all this.

In my defense, Don Q, you cannot tell me that "Alfie" (the instigator of that Pelican Bay riot in 2002) doesn't look like the "mad scientist" with his crazy eyes mad dogging the camera (Photo Page Number 8). And, that look was not a "sign of weakness". The guy is Psycho!

Gava Joe Said: (Can anyone comment on why MS has been getting all the press? It seems like they're just a bunch of disorganized locos, whereas the Surreno/M stuff seems poised to take over the whole damn system.)

Like a host of illegal aliens, El Salvadorans can be found in just about every state of the union. Inevitably, they experience the same resentment and alienation from U.S. citizens and they find comfort and protection in joining a street gang. Like Surenos, they find it fashionable to identify with a "name barrio". In their case it's MS13. As crimes are committed and LE sees a common denominator, they panic and dub it a "massive conspiracy" to infuse Organized Crime in their region.
The press picks it up, creates a scandal, subcommittees are formed seeking appropriations for local, state and other law enforcement groups and presto .... more money for the good guys!!
I suppose one can call it the Flavor of the Year. Next year it will be the Russian Mafia. Oops, I think that was in '85. Whatever.
The media needs a story it can seek its teeth into -- Latinos invading the U.S. via El Salvador.
Not to mention these guys definitely are not choir boys.

Sancha, my lemonade. The Grape Juice is gone and these cashews are getting me thirsty.

Peace ...........

Hey Tijuana Jailer---

I noticed you mentioned in an earlier post that Death Row Joe Gonzalez was a former leader of the NF. Would you possibly know what became of Joe and what legacy, if any, he left. I grew up one street over from Joe in the La Colonia area of Oxnard and knew him well. It absolutely perplexes me how Joe went from a laid back, carefree type of fella to a leader of a prison gang. Anyhow, thanks for the input - Have good one.

don quixote said...

Otra Vez, as always informative Tijuas, and I am not taking issue with the point your making about some such as Alfie or Topo types not being nuts, I was only pointing out that the typical Carnal is very unemotional, a cold calculating demeanor that was learned and cultivated.
And I agree with you and others that one's upbringing no matter how shitty doesn't justify a life of crime. I wasn't trying to make that point, only to attempt to illustrate how that upbringing can produce some very scary individuals that can be brilliant in an antisocial way as we have both known. No way I'm whinning about my life as I've done very well for myself and family with the help of some very caring and patient individuals.

TijuanaJailer said...

RE: Death Row Joe ..... He disappeared from the "scene", for sure after the NF put him "In The Hat". I'm thinking he "rolled" but don't quote me as I could be dead wrong but he's no longer active NF (that's certain) and either way, if he rolled, I'm sure the Feds gave him a full issue: new identity and the nine yards; if he simply dropped out, then he split the scene so his former compadres could not get him.

His personal rise to NF super stardom was very strange.
Having come off San Quentin's Death Row after his death sentence was commuted to life, he and Daniel "Woodsey" Reyes, both NF, were stabbed on the S.Q. yard by EME's Raymond "Chavo" Perez and Manuel "Cheetah" Padilla over ownership rights to a homosexual.
Other NF members, not wanting a confrontation with EME, pleaded with Woodsey to let EME have the "kid" (homosexual inmate) but Woodsey, who was a cousin to "Chalo" Hernandez (co-founder of the NF) and looking to become important with his bro's, would not give in to the EME bullies.
These were the "first shots" in the rekindling of EME-NF hostilities. "Woodsey" was later executed along with his brother Ronnie by EME's "Mundo" Mendoza and "Sailor Boy" Gonzalez.

DR, as he was dubbed by his NF carnales, was locked up and the EME reclaimed the S.Q. yard (in 1973) and DR remained in lock down status for many years after that.

To Don Quixote: I hear you, man. I've heard many LE utter that sentence: "there but for the grace of God go I .....". A wrong turn here or a wrong turn there and who knows ????

Life is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you're gonna get.

Good night and Peace .....

17 Injured During Two More Fights At County Jail
Save It Email It Print It
(CBS) CASTAIC, Calif. A fight at the county jail complex in Castaic left 14 inmates injured Tuesday.

The fighting began about 7:25 a.m. at the North County Correctional Facility when 94 black and Latino inmates in two dorms clashed, Deputy Ban Nguyen of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau said.

Deputies were forced to use "clear-out gas" and "stingball" grenades to stop the brawl, Nguyen said. No deputies were hurt.

One inmate suffered "moderate" injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The 13 others suffered minor injuries.

About 10 p.m. Monday night, another fight at the same jail between about 40 blacks and Latinos left an inmate hospitalized. Two other inmates were treated at the jail for minor injuries.

The fights were the latest in a series of racial incidents at Los Angeles County jails since Feb. 4, despite an ongoing lockdown. The first in the series of fights involved several thousands of black and Latino inmates claimed the life of black inmate Wayne Tiznor.

Another black inmate, Sean Anthony Thompson, died after a fight in a cell at Men's Central Jail on Feb. 12.

Sheriff's officials have blamed the violence on leaders of the Mexican Mafia, or La Eme, who are suspected of ordering attacks on black inmates in retaliation for an attack on a Latino gang member in South Los Angeles.

Ahhh mijo don't be jealous when the adults talk grown-up in front of you...and just cause TJ gets extra ice in his lemonade for speaking in an erudite manner..whoops, that one's probably too big for you, too.
At any rate, TJ, thank you again for the enlightenment, and Don Q as well.
But I'd like to clear up one small point about families and their involvement, at least on an emotional level.
Many, many of these guys have been living double lives for a very long time. They've managed to keep their children out, and save face in front of the men they feel they must answer to, in however a misguided fashion they do. We all make our deals with the devil in our youth; granted, some are a more involved than others. But those of us who've become involved "in the life" at a later age albeit by falling in love, or raising a child or grandchild in a difficult situation, have made our choices out of an unconditional love we feel for this man. Are we proud of the deeds he's done in the name of his "honor?" Of course not. We don't condone them, but neither do we condemn them; we can only try to understand the spot between the rock and hard place in which they exist and continue to love them for the men they want to be.
Many of us are educated, financially independent, employed women...some of us aren't even Chicana, yet we embrace the culture and the identity with which he defines himself as wholeheartedly as if we were born a little further south ourselves.
So don't feel sorry for all of us; but don't condemn us for having the basic feelings humans develop for each other, especially as we grow older and seek that individual with which to walk into the sunset. We as women have made an adult conscious choice as well, not to turn him one way or the other, but to simply walk by his side for as long as we have him.

Hey Tijuas,

Thanks for all of your insight and experience.

I was wondering if you have some information concerning the 'carnales' who have hailed from my hometown, Norwalk.

As I understand it, both Jesus 'Chuy' Fraijas and 'Pelon' Moreno were from my neighborhood. But they were from an earlier generation, and I never knew them.

Do you have any information about them, or any other carnales from NWK that you encountered during your tenure?

Gracias, as always, for your time and wisdom.

With respect,

Norwalquero

(I was wondering if you have some information concerning the 'carnales' who have hailed from my hometown, Norwalk)

Like Hawaiian Gardens and so many longstanding barrios in L.A. and throughout the region, Norwalk has had it's share of made members. Older Norwalk carnales include:

Eddie "Pelon" Moreno (currently deceased),
Jesus "Chuy" Fraijo (died of a heroin overdose in the mid-70's),
Mike "Boo Boo" Moreno (Pelon's younger brother),
Jesse "Big Pelon" Moreno (Eddie's older bro who was made a member many years after Eddie died of a drug overdose in 1973),
Gilbert "Manitas" Sandoval (he was recruited "after" the Cheyenne Cadena incident in Palm Hall in which he was one of the participants),
Juan Duran (dropped out in 1973),
and,
although the Moreno brothers (Jesse and others) technically originated in Norwalk, they migrated north to Sanger where they blazed an EME trail in that area.

I'm sure others from your area have since been recruited but this pretty much covers the 2nd and 3rd wave of EME soldiers with Eddie "Pelon" being a member of 1st Generation. I probably missed a couple but that's what the dusty data base had to offer at this time.

The current "new generation" of EME activity and associate representation from San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange and San Diego Counties has mushroomed to unbelievable numbers.

L.A. has been a gimme seemingly forever but by covering so many connecting counties (and barrios therein), triggermen are imported from one region to take care of business in another region. Keeping tabs on the "common denominators" (the shot callers) becomes a challenging task.

Peace ......

Thanks for the advice, but at age 42 I think we've got the physical aspect of our relationship covered, tough guy. As I'll patiently explain to you, I wasn't whining, hence the "don't feel sorry for us..." etc. I was merely trying to insert a little estrogen into a primarily testosterone-heavy conversation. Just trying to throw out a different perspective for some of you guys on why some of us women do what we do for the men we love.
I'm here to learn about a lifestyle that up until recently, I was fairly ignorant about. The net banging is, quite frankly, somewhat amusing to me; but the other information unfortunately is all too real at this point in my life.
It helps to know both sides of a story, a situation, a life. Try it sometime; maybe you'll find yourself as lucky as mi vato has found himself with me.

SAY IT ISN"T SO DUKE.

Homosexuality and Hollywood celebrity are familiar bedfellows. Indeed, gay sex scandals date right back to the silent era and Fatty Arbuckle, whose career was wrecked when it was revealed that he had buggered all twelve Keystone Cops during one of Clara Bow's wild orgies. In more recent years, popular heavyweight TV sleuth Raymond Burr was well known for his homosexual liaisons with rent-boys - few people realise that he performed the role of "Ironside" in a wheelchair because by 1967 he had taken it up the bum so often that he had trouble standing up. Coming right up to date a powerful new documentary entitled "Mondo Homo" confirms that it contains some startling revelations!

Some of the material covered by the documentary is familiar - tales of John Wayne wearing women's clothes, the young Clarke Gable being given blow-jobs by fellow MGM player William Haines - also some lesser known facts, such as Wayne's uniform fetish and his affair with Clark Gable. "The Duke" apparently liked nothing better than dressing up in a military uniform borrowed from the props department- especially if it included plenty of leather strapping and thigh-length boots. Wayne and Clarke Gable became lovers in 1936 when, at one of studio chief Irving Thalberg's parties, big John, dressed as a member of Queen's Own Highlanders, revealed to Gable that he was wearing nothing under his kilt. He and Gable then retired to a bedroom where the "Gone With The Wind" star proceeded to give Wayne's arse the thrashing of a lifetime with a swagger stick. A torrid three year affair followed, during which Wayne and Gable's wild antics became legendary. On one occasion they nearly gave Al Jolson a heart attack when, dressed in Ku Klux Klan robes, they burst into his hotel room where - wearing black-face - he was growling at Ruby Keeler's badger, and threatened to lynch him. In later years Wayne's uniform fetish nearly destroyed him when, in 1955, "Confidential" magazine threatened to publish a photo of the arch commie-hater dressed as a Soviet Commissar whilst embracing well-known communist Paul Robeson. Eventually a costly settlement was reached.

The Myth of LA's Race War Between Black and Brown
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Myth of L.A.'s Race War
By Maria Luisa Tucker, AlterNet.

Former gang members say the violent Los Angeles jail riots aren't about race; they're about power and pain.

J.R. has spent 12 of his 28 years behind bars for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm, among other things. His broad back is covered with tattoos of women, marijuana leaves, cars, guns. The images were etched into him with a tattoo gun made from a Walkman motor, a guitar string and a single needle. Like the majority of men behind bars in Los Angeles County, J.R. was a gang member. Which gang, he declines to say.

The calculated intimidation factor of his tattoos and his gangbanging past were necessary for survival during his years on the streets and in prison, and are now necessary for his job. Amidst the brightly colored buildings of Hispanic East L.A., J.R. works as a motivational speaker for Homies Industries, a cornerstone of L.A.'s community of gang intervention organizations. He has been rehabilitated, not by the system but by the combination of parenthood, religion and the realization that gang life almost inevitably leads to prison or death. In the neighborhoods he works, kids are more likely to listen to tattooed ex-cons than cops or teachers, and this ex-con is hoping to steer kids away from gang life and toward education and jobs.

J.R. is not alone in this mission. Over the last couple of decades, a cadre of reformed gangsters has created a community that exists in a netherworld between law enforcement and gang life, working to prevent crime and simultaneously keep the trust and respect of gang members. Along with Homies Industries, there are organizations like Unity One, Unity T.H.R.E.E., Homies Unidos, Amer-I-Can and NO GUNS, which negotiate ceasefires between rival gangs, and provides tattoo removal, job training and life skills classes. The gang intervention workers know what goes on in the streets, jails and prisons better than pretty much anyone else. And recently, they have felt a sense of familiar wariness at the news of the violent, racially charged riots that erupted in L.A. County's jails.

Credit: AFP/Robyn Beck

For more than two weeks, headlines have been telling the story of sporadic violence inside the jails that has led to two deaths. The first articles reported that so-called brown-on-black violence began when the Mexican Mafia greenlighted Latino gang members to attack African-American inmates. Later, the sheriff's department said white inmates began the attacks on a black inmate, Wayne Tiznor, the first man to be killed. Though the stories about what sparked the riots have changed, the race war hype stuck.

"When you're on the outside looking in, you are looking for a political answer. And calling it a race riot is the quickest political answer," says J.R., who is Latino. It's both a sensational and digestible way to frame the crisis. "It's like 'Ten o'clock tonight! Mexicans killing blacks! Only on Fox 11 News!' That's what grabs people's attention." But really, he says, "it's about power, money, and dope."

The race-riot narrative simplifies and masks a much more complex tragedy in which racism may be the result of violence, but not its cause. L.A.'s sorely inadequate jails are the setting for a story that has many more antagonists than heroes. And it is a tragedy that begins and ends in the neighborhoods where many of L.A.'s inmates come from -- Compton, Boyle Heights, Inglewood and East L.A. -- where gang intervention workers like J.R. are working to calm the waters and dispel the destructive myth of a new black-Latino race war.

Power and insignificance

Feb. 4: "In rioting triggered by racial tensions, more than 2,000 inmates went on a four-hour rampage Saturday at a maximum-security jail in Castaic, leaving one prisoner dead and nearly 50 others injured." --L.A. Times

"This is more about power, not about whether Latinos hate blacks. It's about who gets to decide what's on television," says Father Greg Boyle, a Jesuit priest who founded Homies Industries and is a highly respected leader of gang intervention in L.A. "I think this has very little to do with race." Father Boyle's statement may sound dismissive, but it is true that the flames of large scale violence behind bars are often sparked by seemingly insignificant things.

For example, Shonteze Williams, a gang intervention worker who spent years in Corcoran State Prison remembers a battle in 1998 that began when a Latino inmate cut in front of a black inmate while they were waiting to use the phone. The ensuing melee involved hundreds of men and left Williams with 22 stitches in his arm. Williams says black and Latino inmates automatically divided along racial lines in the fight, because "you have to stick with your own." It's this kind of group mentality that leads to a "never-ending game" behind bars, says Williams.

At an emotional level, incarceration is the act of stripping someone of their self-determination, and in a street culture that values masculine pride, power and dominance, this is acute. Any minor affront is fraught with the possibility of violence.

"It's a little bit like rape. Rape has nothing to do with sex. It has to do with power," says Father Boyle. The violence manifests along a racial divide, but racism is not the cause. Steve Whitmore, Sheriff's Department spokesman, recognizes this as well: "The conflict was divided along race, but the reason it happened was that it is the culture of the jails. What fuels the fights is the tension in the jails."

Violence has erupted frequently in L.A.'s jails, where overcrowding, understaffing and underfunding have historically been part of the system. In the last few months, seven major fights have been reported in L.A.'s jails, and in the Men's Central facility alone, eight inmates were murdered in under three years. The jails saw similar rioting in 2000, 1996, 1985 and 1972.

Since the riots began, the county has been in a tailspin of fingerpointing. "Who should the fall person be? They try to make [Sheriff] Lee Baca the fall guy. Or they try to blame the county," says Bo Taylor, founder of the gang-intervention organization, Unity One. "Well, it should be society. We allowed this to happen."

These problems are not confined to L.A. County jails or California's prisons, but are part of the larger prison industrial complex set up across the nation. Similar stories are told everywhere of corrupt corrections officers, inmate hierarchies, overcrowding, mistreatment, and -- always -- violence. What's unique to California is its historic reliance on segregation as a method of managing inmates.

Riots and segregation

Feb 5: "Violence broke out again late Sunday, this time at the Pitchess Detention Center North 10 inmates were injured in the violence that broke out just before 10:30 p.m. at Pitchess. [Deputy Alba] Yates said the incident involved approximately 170 Latino and 35 black inmates who 'divided on racial lines and fought'." --L.A. Times

Bo Taylor is a clean-cut black man with a bald head, neatly trimmed goatee, and a tattoo on his inner forearm that reads "God's First" in an elaborate script that takes a moment to decipher. "I've had this 14 years," Taylor says. "People look at it and see something negative before they even read what it says. But that's OK. I want people to prejudge us," he says, because people need to realize their initial judgments are often wrong. "They say you can't judge a book by its cover. I say you can't judge a book by its first chapter."

Taylor does not have an office; he conducts meetings in a Mexican diner housed in a bowling alley near mid-city Los Angeles, and is interrupted every four minutes by the ring of his cell phone. When the discussion turns to the jail riots and segregation, Taylor sighs.

Gang intervention workers repeatedly say that segregation is necessary right now simply to save lives. In the same breath, they say cops and the penal system reinforce the racial antagonism.

"Most inmates have a 6th- or 7th-grade education level," Taylor says. "They don't know how to make decisions. They have no tools to figure things out, and once the media gets involved they start saying things that aren't necessarily true and adding fuel to the fire," he says, referring to the racial component of the coverage. "When you look at a jail, you look at groups of whites, blacks, Asians, Hispanics and then others. People can't use the same phones, or use the same toilets. Someone has implemented a system based on racism."

For decades, California segregated its prison inmates by race. Last year, a Supreme Court decision outlawed the practice and the state is still in the midst of changing its segregation policies. L.A. County has followed suit, stating that it will only segregate inmates in times of emergency. That time came when the riots began Feb. 4, and since then deputies have segregated some jails by race and ethnicity largely in attempts to protect black inmates, who are outnumbered by Latinos.

"It makes it easier for them to control you, but it promotes hatred. There are boundaries set up by the institutions," says Ralph, a Latino volunteer for Taylor's organization and an ex-con who was released from prison last year. (Like many former gang members, he declined to give his last name.) "It's hard to say if it would be better without segregation. It's been etched into prison life."

Taylor believes that segregation is appropriate now, but still holds that race has been used as the scapegoat. "You have to take into consideration that [if you are incarcerated], you don't have a job, you don't have a house or a car, you might not even have a family when you come out. You are a frustrated person! To say it is a race riot is a blanket statement."

Gangs and communities

Feb. 8: "Nearly 500 inmates fought Wednesday in racially charged melees at Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic, marking a fifth day of violence in the Los Angeles County jail system and underscoring officials' inability to stop unrest tied to street conflicts between Latino and black gangs." --L.A. Times

Shonteze Williams Sr. euphemistically calls gangs "communities." His community is the Harlem 30 Crips.

Williams is careful to differentiate between gangbangers -- those who commit crimes and use violence -- and gang members, who are part of the "community" but not necessarily part of the criminal element. "I still have a gangbanger's heart but not a gangbanger's mind," says Williams, who considers himself the voice of reason and peace within the Crips.

Sitting in an office in South Central L.A. that relies entirely on donations and volunteers, Williams talks about the camaraderie of gang life and his belief that gang members can help make positive changes. He believes you don't have to leave the gang to do that: "To be giving back to the community you grew up in, that you used to cause havoc in? Man, that's a beautiful thing."

Williams understands what a lot of law enforcement bureaucrats fail to recognize -- that gang life offers a powerful sense of belonging, the thrill of street life, and a surrogate family to replace absent fathers and strung-out mothers. The group adhesiveness is based partly on a common enemy, and gangs operate much like their own nations by protecting borders, finding symbolism in "flags" or colors, and declaring war on rival gangs. The national values are pride and dominance. Rules are enforced by violence and intimidation.

The rules that apply in jail are established out here, where even during ceasefires men are afraid of looking weak. Williams helped negotiate a ceasefire among 12 gangs that began after the death of Stanley "Tookie" Williams, a founder of the Crips who was executed in December. Even then, those agreeing to the ceasefire were not agreeing to turn the other cheek, says Williams; only not to be the aggressors. "But either way the result is the same -- peace. And credit needs to be given to the gang members for doing that."

A large part of what gang intervention workers do is control rumors and calm tensions before retaliation takes place. On this particular night, Williams plans to get some information on a recent shooting that left a teenager dead. He hopes to comfort family members and simultaneously quell any plans for vengeance. The community of gang intervention workers across L.A. is hoping to do the same on a larger scale.

Williams is part of an effort to strategize how to keep the peace on the streets when hell breaks loose in the jails. The Unity Collaborative, a gang-intervention network made up of five Los Angeles area agencies, brought together a dozen black and Latino gang-intervention leaders in San Pedro, Calif., just south of William's office.

"It's a war out there," one man says at the meeting. Heads nod in agreement. Discussions roam from the current ceasefire in South Central, the peace-building process that is still underway, and the most recent casualty of the jail riots -- a black inmate who died Feb. 12. By the end of the meeting, a mixture of wariness mingled with dogged hope emerged as the men went around the conference table sharing their woes. One spoke about the need for blacks to be unified, another about the upcoming funeral of a 16-year-old who was shot by the cops the day before. There is clearly no immediate end to violence between gangs in or outside of jail, but it is obvious that preventative measures must continue. The men around the table remind themselves that they can't save every life, but that they must keep going in order to save some.

Silence and fear

[Feb. 17: "Skirmishes between black and Latino inmates broke out again Friday night at Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic Six inmates were slightly injured, including four who were taken to a hospital, after more than three dozen prisoners scuffled." --L.A. Times

On Saturday, Feb. 18, the parking lot at the inmate reception center in Pitchess is desolate. As she drives up and catches sight of a piece of paper declaring "No Visits," Elizabeth Schultz feels the wind of hope knocked out of her. Her boyfriend was arrested on drunk driving charges Feb. 6 and since been awaiting trial in the North County Correctional Facility, the same building where the most recent fighting took place. Schultz has been unable to communicate with him because of the lockdown. No mail was allowed in or out until a couple days ago, and inmates are still prohibited to make phone calls or receive visitors. Only the sparsest bit of information is available on the county's inmate information phone line and website, and even that has been more confusing than helpful.

Meanwhile, newspaper headlines continued their story of regular race riots being quashed with tear gas, "sting balls" and rubber pellets. Inmates are punished by having privileges taken away, including showers, and most recently, clothes. According to a Feb. 19 New York Times article, deputies attempted to "calm" inmates by taking away their mattresses and forcing them to strip, leaving only blankets to cover themselves.

Now, in the cold breeze that gusts across the inmate reception center's parking lot, Schultz peers through the gate, even though the actual jail buildings are behind the hills, far from view. The faint, unnerving sound of gunshots echoes through the air. Every few minutes another car ventures in, another family checks to see if visits are allowed today. A father comes and goes, a mother, a neighbor. A guard at the employee entrance road tells Schultz the jail will probably be on lockdown for another couple weeks. He has no other information.

Schultz brushes away tears as she drives away. She is beginning to feel the frustration and outrage at the system gang-intervention workers have been dealing with for decades.

"California's answer to gangs is 25-to-life for teenagers," J.R. says. His voice rises in disgust. "You can rape a woman or molest a kid and be out in a few years. That's messed up."

As for the jail riots, J.R. declares, "I don't see no color lines. I see struggle and pain."
