Starting right now until the middle of next week, I'll be away from the computer. Therefore, I can't post or even moderate comments. But since I don't want to leave you voiceless or cause a spleen backup, I turned off the comment moderation. I know for sure this will turn the comments section into a freak show. So be prepared. Before I return next week, please put the funiture back where it belongs, throw out the beer cans, clean up the ashtrays and wipe the blood off the walls. To the readers who aren't completely insane, accept my apologies. The comments do not reflect the opinions of this blog and the opinions expressed are strictly those of the commenters. See you next week.

Gang Member Gets 40 Years In Officer's Shooting
(CBS) LOS ANGELES A gang member was sentenced Monday to 40 years to life in prison for shooting at Los Angeles police outside a Hollenbeck apartment complex in July 2005, wounding one officer in the hand.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Judith Champagne imposed the term on Rodrigo Perez, 21, who was convicted on Feb. 9.

Perez fired into a group of eight police officers who were gathered in the parking lot of Estrada Courts Apartment around 3 a.m. on July 3, 2005, as the officers were completing a carjacking investigation, Deputy District Attorney Stephanie Sparagna said.

Perez, a passenger in the car that passed by the officers, fired at them with a semiautomatic machine gun, hitting Officer Alex Fuentes in the hand, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Bullets from the drive-by shooting went through the living room and into the kitchen of a nearby home, but no one in the house was hit.

Perez was arrested by Los Angeles police in February 2006 and has been held on $5 million bail since then.

Headline News:
From the Sacramento Bee, Staff Writer :)
FBI intercepts and makes numerous gang arrests at top San Francisco bath houses. According to one city police official, "the bath houses were targeted after a compliant involving a "Norteno 14" gang member repeately raping a local patron, for failure to pay approximately one hundred and fifty dollars in exchange for an eight ball of the controlled substance Methamphetamine. Commonly referred to as "speed" or "crank" by local drug users and sellers, an eight-ball is street lingo for the equivalent to three point five grams or one eight of an once of the illegal controlled substance. The police officials added that in recent years the local gay community bath houses were targeted by the prison based gang, "N-14" or "Norteno 14" for an increase drug distribution and proceeds. "They accepted sexual encounters just like hard currency" added one police official. The Bee inteviewed a local health official who requested that her name not be made public which stated, "In recent years, gang members have shown a vary uncommon practice in the Northern Bay area of entering these sex spas for homosexual encounters." The health official stated that the local County sponsored Health Clinics that provides routine Sexual Transmitted Diease testing have doubled with positive results from patients stating to have been recently released from California's Department of Correction and who had entered the bath houses. FBI officals released a statement advising and pleading to the gay community that those that frequent the bath houses come forward and report any sexual mis-conduct or criminal activity involving the "Norteno 14" gang. "It seems that the these Norterno fourteen gang members decided to continue their sexual practice and preferences in and out of the state prison system. An uncommon practice not seen throughout the rest of the state prison system," stated, Johnny Ojeda, a San Francisco Gang Officer that tracks and indentifies the prison based gang once release. Horror Gateway
The hate crime that killed Cheryl Green may be part of a larger campaign, orchestrated out of the prisons.
~ By ANNETTE STARK ~
Like other African-American residents of this 12-block working-class enclave, Charlene Lovett came to the South L.A. neighborhood of Harbor Gateway thinking she was giving her kids a better life. Shortly after she settled in, her neighbors came over to warn her about a decade of violence by Latino gangs against neighborhood blacks. Lovett recalls, “They said don’t walk north to 204th Street.”

That was six years ago. Today, one wall in Lovett’s tidy ground floor apartment is dedicated – with photos, letters, and posters – to her 14-year-old daughter Cheryl Green, who was brutally gunned down in December by the 204th Street Gang, the 100-member Latino street gang that has been terrorizing the black community there. “I’m not part of a gang. My daughter was not part of a gang,” Lovett stresses. “My daughter was killed because of the color of her skin.”

This is not a gang war. There is no black gang that encroaches on the 204’s turf. The hate is so prevalent and obvious that activists and city officials alike can no longer avoid calling it by the name being used by everyone from prosecutors to opinion writers in the L.A. Times: ethnic cleansing. “I’m not saying it’s a problem with Latinos generally,” Lovett clarifies. “I wouldn’t dare say that. All I’m saying is that the gangs here have let it be known that they hate black people.

“They have written it on the walls, graffiti-ed the ground, and put it online, on the web.”

The evidence is hard to miss: the N-word is graffitied everywhere; 206th Street has been declared a line blacks cannot cross; there is a big market on 204th Street in which blacks are forbidden to shop. Like other Latino gang members, one of the suspects charged in this murder had a MySpace web page riddled with anti-black rhetoric.

And now, more. Seated at her dining table and joined by Los Angeles Humanity Advocacy Group’s Melvin Snell and Project Islamic Hope’s Najee Ali, Lovett listens, hands pressed against her mouth, as Snell reads a letter she recently received from the previous occupant of her apartment. And though it came just a few days ago, “Words of encouragement from one black mother to another,” is dated December 13, 2006. The sender – Snell calls her “Blank” – was working in the Emergency Room in Harbor UCLA hospital the night Cheryl and her friends were rushed in. She helped get the victims out of the car. “I watched them work on your baby,” she says.

“I know you don’t remember me, but my name is ‘Blank.’ I’m the lady who used to live in your apartment. When I moved out, you moved in. I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am for not warning you about the 204s. You see I had a bad experience with them. They shot my daughter’s boyfriend’s car up one night as they were leaving to go to the movies. God spared my daughter, for some reason. I don’t know. God needed Cheryl up in heaven.”

Across the street, newly constructed Spanish-style town homes are riddled with bullet holes and anti-black graffiti. Photographer Ted Soqui was taking pictures when he caught up with the developer, a Chinese immigrant, who said he has to patch broken windows and bullet holes and clean up the 204s racial slogans once a week. It’s sad, he said. He was trying to build something that would make the neighborhood nicer.

Ernesto Alcarez, 20, was arrested Dec. 21 in connection with Green’s murder, and on Jan. 4 police had Jonathan Fajardo, 18, the alleged triggerman, in custody. Both are charged with special circumstances murder, attempted murder, ? and hate crimes. They can face the death penalty if convicted.

On Jan. 15, Ali announced that he had negotiated a peace treaty with the 204s that would be signed at 10 a.m. the following Thursday outside the Del Amo market where blacks are forbidden to shop. One of the reasons, he said, was fear of more violence by black gangs living outside the Harbor Gateway area who might come seeking retaliation. Snell, National Action Network President Rev. K.W. Tullos, members of Ali’s Latino and African American Leadership Alliance, and members of the 204th Street Gang would all be present.

That event was co-opted by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who scheduled a press conference on the subject at exactly the same time, right nearby. At 10 a.m. that Thursday, Villaraigosa stood outside the Del Amo Market with LAPD Chief William Bratton and FBI Director Robert Muller and announced that they were putting the 204’s on gang injunctions and taking other measures citywide. “We are coming with everything we have … and we are putting you out of business,” the mayor said.

As gang violence increased 40 percent in 2006, community leaders prevailed on the mayor and law enforcement to take a harder look at the increase in hate crimes – not only in Harbor Gateway, but also in Long Beach, where a crowd of blacks on Halloween attacked three white teenage girls. In Highland Park, where prosecutors who obtained hate-crime convictions against four members of the Latino gang, the Avenues, uncovered the gang’s chilling “racial cleansing plot” against young African Americans and their Latino supporters.

Criminal attorney Anthony Willoughby has defended gang members as well as members of the Mexican Mafia, the prison gang known by the FBI to control some aspects of the drug trade. Unlike street gangs, this Mafia is highly organized; Latino gangs pay them a tax. As long as recalcitrant gang members don’t end up in prison, Willoughby explains, they are safe. However, since most gangbangers will do at least one prison stint, a Latino gang member who refuses to carry out their agenda stands a good chance of being killed.

To Willoughby this is the “the 400-pound gorilla in the room.” No one is talking about it. “Every race riot in L.A. is precipitated and directed by the Mexican Mafia,” he says.

“[Villaraigosa and others are] missing the boat,” he adds. “The issue is that the Mexican Mafia has issued a green light for these killings. Unless you deal with the source, the Mexican Mafia, you’re only dealing with the symptoms. The light must go red.”

When asked by Newsweek reporter Andrew Murr last week if prison gang violence was spilling onto the streets, Bratton answered, “There were stories a couple of years back about the Mexican Mafia targeting blacks, but we could not document it anywhere.”

“We assumed that Muller the head of the FBI would have at least briefed Bratton before they met, or e-mailed him a copy of the report on the FBI website detailing the Mexican Mafia’s stated desire to kill all blacks,” Ali says.

Five days after the mayor’s press conference, there’s new graffiti on 205 St. It says “205s Fuck the Injunctions.”

“It wasn’t there this morning,” says William, a black man who doesn’t want to give us his last name. “They used to write 204s.” When William first moved here, the 204s visited and said he wasn’t allowed to go to the market.

On the other side of 205th Street and Harvard, a Latino man holding his baby daughter stops to talk to us. He points west, down the block. That’s where they deal the drugs, he says. “By the trucks. You see? They kill many children there.”

Early in the morning on January 21, a black man on his way to pick up his kids was shot on 225 St. Law enforcement believes it was the work of a rival Latino gang, the East Torrance gang that Ali says has threatened to kill him if he doesn’t stop coming around.

“I’ve been coming over here since about 1995 and this has always been about racial tension. There is no other gang here,” says a 30-year-old African American who wished to go unnamed.

“If the white population was acting like the Latino population, we’d have the Department of Justice and everyone else in here,” Willoughby says. “Because the actions that are occurring right now are worse than the Ku Klux Klan.”

Cop sentenced on sexual assault charge

Mass - A former state trooper was sentenced Tuesday to 5 to 10 years in state prison for sexually assaulting a Barrington teenager while the boy was asleep at his home.

"You used your position of authority and as a Big Brother to take advantage of this young man," Strafford County Superior Court Judge Peter Fauver told Henry Bird. "Despite all the good things you did that one night wiped out all of those good things."

Bird, 70, was the boy's Big Brother with the Big Brother, Big Sister program for about two years before he assaulted the teenager on Feb. 26, 2005, when the victim spent the night at Bird's house.

Fauver said he was disturbed by the "web woven" by Bird during trial in December to imply that the victim was not telling the truth about the assault.

"He ruined our family's life and (my son's) life," the boy's mother told the court. "We welcomed him into our home, and he took it all away from us, and I don't know why."

Bird did not admit his guilt of the crime until he read an apology Tuesday to the teenager, his mother and the local Big Brother, Big Sister agency, stating that there was no excuse for his conduct.

Bird was head of security for former Gov. Meldrim Thomson and later worked as chief of police for Plymouth State University.

Cop gets 17 years for sexual abuse of boy

Woodbrige, NJ - A disgraced Woodbridge police officer, who sexually assaulted a teenage boy for three years and took lurid pictures of a 15-year-old girl in a separate case, was sentenced to 17 years in prison Friday in Superior Court, New Brunswick.

But Douglas Karlson, 47, can see as little as five years and five months of prison time.

Karlson was convicted in July of official misconduct and endangering the welfare of a child for taking topless photographs of the 15-year-old girl. That same jury could not agree on the charges involving the sexual assault of the boy, now in his 20s.

During a December retrial, Karlson was convicted of the sexual attacks that occurred between 1994 and 1997 when the boy was 14 to 17 years old.

Karlson, dressed in a suit and wearing a scruffy beard, declined to speak in court Friday.

The victim of his sexual assaults told Superior Court Judge Frederick DeVesa about the legacy of those attacks.

"To this day, I still have nightmares," said the man. "I was too scared (as a child) to press charges."

DeVesa sentenced Karlson to 12 years with six years of parole ineligibility for the attacks on the boy. Karlson also drew a consecutive sentence of five years for photographing the girl.

He has about seven months of credit for time served.

Karlson's sentence includes community supervision for life and a place on the Megan's Law list.

His attorney, Thomas Buck of Milltown, said Karlson is appealing the convictions.

During Karlson's first trial in July, Assistant Middlesex County Prosecutor Christie Bevacqua showed the jury more than 50 photographs Karlson took at photo sessions with the girl between October 2004 and May 2005.

The photos show the girl in various topless poses in which she covers her breasts.

Karlson met the girl and a woman, Ann Marie Dobbs, for the first time after being sent to a Colonia residence in 2004 to investigate the report of a stolen camera.

Dobbs, charged with Karlson, was due to get probation in exchange for her testimony against him during the July trial.

On Friday, Bevacqua said Karlson, who acknowledged having an affair with Dobbs, used his position as a police officer to manipulate an emotionally unstable woman to get at the girl for his own sexual gratification.

"He sized them up from the moment he met them," Bevacqua said.

Photographing the girl and molesting the boy has wrought enormous emotional damage, she said.

"He took advantage of them in their formative years," Bevacqua said.

Karlson took the stand in his own defense in July, saying the allegations of sexual assault of the boy were fabricated in retaliation for a dispute between the boy, Karlson and Karlson's wife, Donna Karlson, a Middlesex County sheriff's officer.

But the victim testified that the abuse started in June 1994 when Karlson took him to his bedroom under the pretense of teaching him how to use a condom. During the process, the man said, Karlson performed various sex acts. He said the activity continued about every two months for the next three years.

The crimes committed by Karlson had tragic ripple effects.

Last year, a 5-year-old Sayreville boy, Erik Sturgis, died in a house fire after being left alone by his single father who struggled to find day care while holding down a job.

Part of Kevin Sturgis' day-care problem stemmed from Karlson's crimes. The state Division of Youth and Family Services deemed Karlson, Erik's stepgrandfather, an "inappropriate caregiver" after his arrest on the endangering and official misconduct charges.

Karlson had been with the Woodbridge Police Department for more than 18 years before his automatic termination following his conviction.

http://www.lacitybeat.com/article.php?id=5156&IssueNum=196

The dirty little secret was a decade old already when escalating racial brawls between African-American and Latino students in Los Angeles high schools finally attracted mainstream media attention. But by April 2005, with two black-versus-brown melees involving at least 100 students at Jefferson High School in the same week, at least school administrators reluctantly admitted that they did indeed have a serious racial situation on their hands.

Media jumped on the situation with big headlines, but to city officials, members of the public, and even some of those same students, the bigger picture was still fuzzy months later in September 2005, when Reverend Al Sharpton came to Los Angeles to meet with students of Jefferson High. In a press conference held outside the school following the meeting, Sharpton joined Christine Chavez and Najee Ali, all co-founders of the Latino/African American Leadership Alliance, all of whom had the foresight to suggest that mounting black-brown tensions in this city could lead to an all-out race war.

The shooting of Anthony Prudhomme and Christopher Bowser in Highland -Park, like the recent shooting of 14-year-old Cheryl Greene in Harbor Gateway, the shooting of another black man on his way to pick up his kids in Harbor Gateway and other violent episodes (on Sunday, the L.A. Times listed three more – previously unpublished – Harbor Gateway murders of blacks since 1997) represent one aspect of the widespread racial campaign that black leaders feared. These attacks are only recently being treated not just as shootings, but also as hate crimes in which Latino gangs purposely killed black residents because of their race, not because of competition over drug sales or any other interpretation of “turf wars.” None of the victims mentioned here were members of a gang.

U.S. Attorneys in Prudhomme’s case painted a chilling picture of a widespread ethnic cleansing plot against African Americans and their Latino friends and supporters. According to some law enforcement officials, attorneys who have represented these gangs, and the testimony of gangsters themselves, at least some of these shootings are believed to have originated with orders from the Mexican Mafia prison gang. As to whether or not that’s meant to be a warning to black gangs, no one knows, because these killings have happened in areas where black gangs have no presence.

Two months after Sharpton’s appearance at Jefferson High, Porfino “Dreamer” Avila was indicted as one of five Avenues gang members accused of hate crimes against black residents of Highland Park. Avila was already serving consecutive life sentences for the murders of Anthony Prudhomme and Christopher Bowser. In addition to charging that the murders were racially motivated, U.S. prosecutors noted that there had also been other incidents. Avenues members (who are strongly tied to the Mexican Mafia) shot at a black teenager who was on his bike, pistol-whipped a female African American jogger, and threatened a man with a box cutter, saying “You niggers have been here long enough.”

Unlike heavily gang-infested areas such as Watts, South L.A., and Inglewood, Highland Park is bursting with middle-class urban charm; nice hillside homes – some tiny and cute, others large and expensive-looking – overlook trendy new businesses and cafes such as the Highland Perk coffee house down the block from where Anthony Prudhomme lived and died. Unlike Watts, South L.A., and Inglewood, there are plenty of places for a kid to get a job. Highland Park simply does not look like your typical gang neighborhood.

The man Prudhomme believes killed her son is not your typical gangbanger, either. The man – we’ll call him “the shooter” – worked as a roofer and lived with his middle-class parents in one of those small, well-kept homes. His brother is in internal affairs at LAPD and his sister is a civil attorney. It is believed that after the murders he continued to live with his parents on Yosemite Street and then went to stay in the guesthouse behind his sister’s large hillside home. It’s empty now and the whole place is for sale.

Avenues gang member-turned-informant David Cruz was in protective custody in the county jail when he spoke with Los Angeles Police Detectives Teague and King in July 2001. He told the detectives that the reason he needed protection was that the Mexican Mafia had placed “a green light” on him for cooperating with law enforcement. He was marked for death. Cruz went on to tell Teague and King that Avila was at the scene and drove the car, but another man pulled the trigger.

FOR ALL THE FUCKIN GAY MEXICANS HERE ON WALLY'S BLOG. A STORY ABOUT A MEXICAN TRANSEXUAL WHICH YOU FAGGOTS WILL SURELY ENJOY.

The Murder of a Boy Named Gwen
She was seventeen and sexy and wanted to party. But something seemed off about Gwen Arajuo -- and when the guys found out her secret, things turned ugly fast.
BOB MOSER - Rolling Stone Magazine

She looked like the perfect complement to another night of getting wasted. Model-thin, with sultry eyes and pouty lips, Gwen Araujo carried herself a lot like her idol, Gwen Stefani. Plus, she wanted it. Jay Cazares and Mike Magidson could tell that in a second.
It was nearing the end of summer in Newark, California, an old salt-mining town thirty-five miles southeast of San Francisco that has sprawled into a Silicon Valley suburb. The two friends, dropouts from Newark Memorial High, had interrupted their twice-weekly game of dominoes to make a beer run. And there she was, all alone.

"Need a ride?" they hollered out the window of Mike's truck.

"I want to party," she told them.

She lied about her age, saying she was nineteen. She lied about her name, calling herself Lida. But as soon as they got back to the party house -- a cramped, dingy tract home that their friend Jose Merel shared with his two brothers -- everybody knew she meant it about wanting to party. Humble as the house was, with its dorm-room atmosphere and stale-beer stench, the place was famous for its blowouts. Lida spent the rest of the night flirting with the guys, brushing up against them, firing them up. When they went out to the garage to smoke some weed, she gave them power hits. Lips on lips, lungs to lungs. Oh, yeah -- she definitely wanted it.

The only question was who would do her first. Jay, Mike and Jose had been tight for years. Girls came and went, babies were born, jobs were lost, but nothing came between "the Three Stooges," as Jay called them. They took genuine pride in being drunk, stoned and stupid. On April 20th, the Stooges joined the rest of America's most dedicated potheads in a national daylong weedathon. Thursdays were always bar nights, when they would drop $100 apiece on long-neck Coronas and shots of Patron. "We got a high tolerance," Jay boasted.

Jay thought Lida was hot, but he wasn't going to have sex with her. The quietest and steadiest of the Stooges at twenty-two, he was already juggling two sideline squeezes while working construction jobs to support his girlfriend, Lisa, the mother of his two kids. That left Mike and Jose -- "Dumb and Dumber," Jay called them. Mike was a hyperactive white kid who got busted for public drunkenness and meandered from one lousy job to the next: a classic gangsta wanna-be, always listening to rap and talking a mile a minute. Jose - like Mike an ex-jock from Newark High -- was training as an electrician to support his own out-of-wedlock baby.

That night, after fooling around with Lida, the Stooges went outside to smoke and take stock. There was no question she was hot -- almost too hot, the way she was hanging on to everybody, talking at the top of her lungs. "I've never met a girl like that," Jay said.

Jaron Nabors, a sweet-faced, foul-mouthed college student who'd been hanging out at the Merel house, took a drag on his cigarette and considered what Jay had said. Suddenly, a weird thought popped into his mind.

"Could this be a dude?" he asked.

He said it like a joke, but it got Jay going. "Hey, Mike," he hollered. "Come over here, dude -- you know about this kind of stuff." Seems there'd been this story going around about Mike getting tricked by a girl in San Francisco. Said she was a girl but turned out to be a guy. So now they were all laughing at Mike. And the next minute, they were all laughing over what Jaron had said about Lida, because -- nah, no way. A dude could never look that hot, right?

* * * *

Three years before, at age fourteen, she had chosen Thanksgiving dinner to make an announcement to her family: From now on, the boy they knew as Edward Araujo Jr. would be living as a girl named Gwen. There were forty-some cousins to come out to, not to mention aunts and uncles and elderly relatives who believed in rosaries and mortal sin. Sure, they all knew Eddie had grown up playing dolls with his sister Pearl and getting chased home from school by kids hurling rocks and slurs. But here was Gwen, ta-dum, hair growing out, eyebrows in a perfect arch like her mom's, lipstick parting into the kind of smile that was often missing from Eddie's repertoire.

"It turned out to be a beautiful moment," recalls David Guerrero, an uncle who helped his sister Sylvia raise her four children after she divorced Edward Araujo Sr. "Everybody was hugging. Even older members of the family were OK with it." Gwen's mom was especially cool about it: She and her new daughter went shopping for clothes, did their hair and makeup together, even talked about how big Gwen's new breasts should be.

But kids and teachers at school were not OK with it. Gwen spent the next two years getting taunted and bullied and punished for using the girls' bathroom before she finally dropped out. If school didn't want her, fine. The hell with Newark, where people were always staring, whispering, calling her a freak. She'd get a job, save up for beauty school and have surgery to complete her transformation. Then she'd head for Hollywood, where nobody would bat an eye at her -- not unless they wanted her. "I'm going to do makeup for movie stars," she told her mother. "I don't know if I'm even going to have time for you -- you're going to have to call my secretary."

Gwen applied for a couple of jobs, one at Starbucks and the other at a grocery store, but both times her applications were mysteriously "lost." "She knew why it was happening," her mother says. "She knew." So Gwen threw her energy into what was left: parties, boys and makeup. She tried new looks, new personalities. Magenta hair, green hair, spiked hair, flowing hair. Her head swam with the Gwen Stefani lyrics she was addicted to:
Magic's in the makeup
But I want to be the real thing.

After she met the Three Stooges, in the summer of 2002, Gwen became a welcome fixture at the Merel house. It wasn't long before Mike, Jose and Jose's brother Paul all had sex with her -- always with her clothes on. She found ways to get to house parties all over the Bay Area, introducing herself sometimes as Gwen, sometimes Wendy, sometimes Lida. She was out of control, mouthier than ever, drinking and partying and God knew what else on a daily basis. Early one morning, her mom picked her up in an alleyway after some drunk guys found out she was a boy and cut her with a broken beer bottle. Sylvia, terrified, cried all the way home. "You need to be honest about who you are," she told Gwen. "I'm so worried about what's going to happen to you. My worst fear is that I'm going to wind up going into a morgue and identifying your body."

But Gwen didn't listen. Fooling around gave her what she needed most. "If you can make men want you, that means somebody is finally accepting you as legitimate, as a woman," says Danielle Castro, a transgendered friend of the family. "That becomes the most important thing in the world. You're not going to risk it by saying, 'Oh, by the way, I've got a dick.' Not when you're seventeen. But it's a dangerous game."

Very dangerous. More transgendered people are killed in hate crimes every year than all the other major targets combined -- including blacks, Jews, Hispanics, lesbians and gay men. Most often, the victims are young transgendered women killed by men who've had sex with them. Sometimes the killers discover they've been misled and freak out. "They feel they had to do what they did," says forensic psychologist Karen Franklin, who interviews hate-crime perpetrators. "They feel tricked. Their masculinity has been betrayed. They've had sex with a man!"

Other times the killers know they're having sex with a girl who's still a guy, at least in the anatomy department. "A lot of times, these murderers can't handle their own desires," says Shawna Virago, a transgender activist who works with Community United Against Violence, an anti-hate group in San Francisco. "They turn their anger on the victim rather than the society that is making them feel stigmatized by their own desires. And when they do, it gets ugly."

* * * *

The stooges enjoyed having Lida around -- who wouldn't? She was always doing stuff to get them worked up. One night she broke up their domino game by throwing the tiles all over the place, getting up on the table and rubbing herself while she danced. Paul's girlfriend, Nicole Brown, decided to egg her on. "Take your top off if you're gonna do that," she told Lida. The guys agreed, of course. "Yeah, we'll give you money if you take your top off," they whooped. Pissed off, Lida hopped down off the table and backhanded Nicole "pretty damn hard," Jay recalled. It escalated from there, with the two girls in a full-scale fistfight. Lida, petite as she was, surprisingly held her own. "Nicole was hurt," Jay said. "Her hair was fucked up and she had blood on her."

The guys didn't think much about it until a few days later, when Lida was off somewhere else. Mike started bragging about how she'd given him a blow job a couple of nights before. How she'd pulled her pants down but refused to take them all the way off. How she wanted him to do her from behind -- that way -- because she was having her period.

Jaron started giving Mike a hard time about how gross that was, anal sex. But then Jose chimed in. It turned out that Lida had told him the same thing, done the same thing, maybe two weeks before. A period couldn't last that long, could it?

They started comparing notes. How come Lida always wanted it from behind? Why wouldn't she let them touch her breasts? Weren't her hands kind of rough for a girl? Didn't she always wear something over her neck, like maybe she was covering up an Adam's apple? And what about that fight with Nicole? Lida fought like -- well, a guy.

This called for a blunt. They trooped off to the garage and lit up. For such a tight group of guys, this was a major mind-fuck. "It's like a fraternity," says Barrie Thorne, a sociologist at the University of California at Berkeley. "You get guys who are invested in being straight but whose bond includes physical and emotional closeness, a lot of homoerotic overtones. They police each other's masculinity." Being together was the one thing the Stooges could count on in their lives -- and being together was all about being guys, drinking and smoking and fucking and telling dumb jokes. If Lida wasn't straight, did that mean that they weren't straight? And if they weren't straight, what were they?

Mike could laugh about the whole thing, but Jose couldn't let it rest. He had no patience with gays. God, what if this meant he was gay, too? Seeing Jose's discomfort, Mike couldn't resist needling him, rattling off all the reasons it seemed like Lida was a guy.

"You don't know for sure," Jaron pointed out.

But Jose was getting worked up. He glared at Mike. "Do you want to be gay?" he asked.

It was like a schoolyard taunt, daring Jose to do something. "The question becomes: How do you prove you're straight?" says Thorne. "One way is to take action your friends can see. You get a kind of catharsis through violence against the person who's caused your masculinity to be called into question."

Between drags, Jaron was giving the matter some serious thought. They all agreed that if someone did this to a killer, that person would "get smoked." Jaron was always talking like that, trying to sound like a mobster instead of an econ major. But later, recounting the conversation in a letter to his girlfriend, Jaron reported that the guys knew what they were going to do if Lida turned out to be a guy. "We went off on a Tony Soprano-type plan to kill the bitch and get rid of the body," Jaron wrote.

* * * *

It was still on their minds when they got together again a few nights later, on the first Thursday in October. As usual, the guys spent bar night cruising the local clubs, getting shitfaced. Jay and Jose started out by shooting pool and downing a twelve-pack. Then they picked up Mike and Jaron and headed to the Elephant Bar, an upscale joint with a jungle decor. Then came Club Mangos, a down-and-dirty dance joint in a run-down strip mall where they knew the bartenders. After they closed the place down at 2 a.m., they headed back to the Merel house to wind down with a couple more beers, a joint or two -- and maybe Lida. Jose said she'd called the house earlier and would probably be over. "Good," Mike said. "We can finally ask her about it. We won't have to guess anymore."

When they drove up to the Merel house, Lida was standing out front under a eucalyptus tree, smoking a cigarette with Nicole, high as a kite. Earlier that day, after doing some crystal meth and downing a couple of forty-ounce beers, she had decided to cut loose. In the past, to avoid detection, she had duct-taped her underwear to conceal her anatomy when she hit the party circuit. But that night was Gwen Stefani's birthday, so she decided to celebrate by squeezing into a revealing denim miniskirt and heading for the faded yellow house on Saint Matthew Drive.

The guys swaggered inside, cracked open some beers and sat down to dominoes in the cramped dining room. Lida pulled up a chair, squeezed in between Mike and Jose and started giving them the usual grief: "Are you playing dominoes again? Why can't I ever play?"

All of a sudden, Jose pushed back his chair, stood up behind her and felt the front of her neck.

"What the hell are you doing?" Lida asked.

"We want to know why you want everybody to fuck you in the ass," Jose said, already starting to seethe.

She looked up at him, startled. "Jose, how can you ask me that?"

According to Jaron, who would recall the night in vivid detail, the other guys jumped in. "Just answer the question," they advised Lida. "You're cool to have around, and we just want to know."

They had never seen Lida at a loss for words. She stared into space for several long moments before she finally protested, "No, no, no, no, no -- I'm not."

By then, Mike had slid his hand between her legs, saying, "Just let me feel it and everything will be chill." But Lida clamped both her hands down on her lap. "No," she said. "I'm not going to let you molest me."

Mike pulled back. "Look," he suggested. "Let's go in the bathroom and you can show me." OK, Lida said. But she made a break for the front door, saying she needed a cigarette first. Jaron blocked her way. "You've got to do this first," he instructed her.

Mike took Lida into the little guest bathroom near the front door. After the lock clicked, the rest of the guys sat around the table, talking about how this might be a dude after all. A real girl would have answered the question quick and easy, right? Why had Lida hesitated so long?

"I swear, if it's a man, I'll kill him," Jose hissed. "If it's a dude, she's not leaving -- he's not leaving."

Finally Mike emerged. "Same old shit," he reported. "She won't let me feel." The guys decided that Nicole might have more luck, being a woman, so she and Mike went back in the bathroom. Jose stalked outside to take a piss. A minute later, Mike came out again. "I didn't feel balls," he said, "but I felt two pairs of underwear. That's a man. That's got to be a man. I don't know what I'm going to do."

"Just be calm and think clear," Jaron told him. "Whatever you do, don't make a mess." Mike got behind him and put a chokehold on Jaron's skinny neck. "What about this?" he asked. "Can you breathe?" Jaron could only shake his head no.

Suddenly, they heard a scream. Nicole came busting out of the bathroom, yelling, "This is a fucking man!"

Lida bolted toward the front door, but Mike caught her, pinned her to the carpet, yanked up her skirt, peeled back her underwear. "Fucking balls," he spat. "Right there -- fucking balls." He let Lida stand up and got behind her, putting a chokehold on her.

Jose stunned his friends by starting to cry. "I can't be gay," he repeated over and over again. "I can't be fucking gay." Nicole tried to console him. "Any girl you meet after this, it won't make a difference," she told him, putting her hands on his shoulders. "You still look like the football player I knew you as."

Mike had Lida down on the carpet again, his legs locked around hers, his meaty forearm clamping down on her Adam's apple. Jay pulled him off and Lida struggled to her knees. "Please don't," she gasped. "I have a family."

Jose ran to the kitchen and grabbed a can of food. When he came back into the living room, he reared back and pounded Lida over the head with it. She crumpled against the wall, blood welling up on the crown of her head. Jose ran out again, came back this time with a frying pan. Mike propped Lida up while Jose swung and connected, square on her forehead.

Nicole decided to leave. Jay and Jaron got into Mike's truck. "They're going to kill that bitch," Jay said. The two friends drove to the house where Jay lived with his parents. Tiptoeing into the pitch-black storage shed, they used their lighters to locate three shovels and a pick. Ten minutes later, they were back at the party house.

Lida was sitting on the couch by then, hands in her lap, blood streaking down her face. Jose was bitching about the blood, how it was getting everywhere, how he was going to have to clean it up. "Get off the couch," he ordered Lida. She did as she was told, standing up against the wall while Jose furiously scrubbed blood off the cushions. Mike came in from the garage and asked Jaron for his ten-inch hunting knife. A minute later he was back with an armful of white rope.

"Enough is enough," Jaron thought. It seemed like this had been going on for a couple of hours, and sooner or later Lida would start yelling and wake the neighbors. "Knock the bitch out," he said.

Mike dropped the rope and punched Lida in the face, once, twice. She fell limp, slid down the wall, landed ass-first with a muffled thud. Perfect position for Mike to knee her a couple of more times, right in the face. The second time, Jaron heard Lida's head snap back into the wall, leaving a puckered dent in the plaster.

Mike picked up the rope and wrapped it around her wrists four or five times. He did the same thing with her ankles. Seeing that her blood was getting everywhere, Jay fetched a comforter. They wrapped Lida in it. She wasn't putting up a fight anymore. Her legs jutted out the bottom of the blanket, below her smooth brown calves, but the rest of her was bundled up well enough for Mike, Jay and Jaron to hoist her up and cart her out to the garage. Jose kept scrubbing the couch and crying.

In the garage, where they first tasted Lida's lips just a couple of months before, broken crap was strewn everywhere. There was a washer and dryer, an old refrigerator and a beat-up car buried under a pile of junk. The guys dumped Lida on a piece of carpet near the back door. Mike grabbed a loose end of the rope with his bloody hands, pulled it around her neck and twisted, hard.

Stephanie Baumann, one of Gwen's best friends, was in first-period economics when she got the news. "This girl in my group was telling another girl, 'I heard Gwen was missing.' And the other girl goes, 'Gwen?' The first girl says, 'She used to be Eddie in junior high.' I'm like, 'What?' I ran to the drama room and cried and cried. I was supposed to be rehearsing The Laramie Project that afternoon, but I couldn't do it. I couldn't deal."

Newark was already buzzing about the high school drama department's decision to stage the famous play about the hate-fueled murder of Matthew Shepard. "People were saying, 'Why don't you stick with The Fantasticks?' " recalls drama teacher Barbara Williams. "Nobody in Newark needed to see such things, they said. Partly because of our proximity to San Francisco, people like to assume that the town is a model of tolerance."

Stephanie loved the idea of the play, partly because of Gwen. They'd gotten tight back in seventh grade, when Gwen was still Eddie. "He was basically the class clown, I guess you'd say -- always cracking jokes, very sarcastic," Stephanie recalls. "In eighth grade, he gave me a ring. He wanted us to be best friends. It's a silver ring with these bubbles on it. I've never taken it off. And that's when he told me his, I guess you'd say, sexual preference." Just before Gwen disappeared, the two friends had scored tickets to see their idol, Gwen Stefani, in concert. "God, we couldn't wait," Stephanie says.

Now rumors were flying around town, repeated in the hallways at school and the aisles at Big Lots: A girl got butt-fucked at this three-day sex party, but then they found out it was a guy and killed her. Yeah, and twenty-five people were there, and they hung her up in the garage and beat her like a pinata. The Stooges just kept partying like nothing had happened. On October 4th, the night after Gwen disappeared, they were back at it at the Merel house. "What happened to Lida?" Nicole asked Jay when she arrived that night.

"You don't want to know," he said.

But Jaron didn't know how to keep his mouth shut. Earlier that day, smoking a joint with his friend Adam Hewson, he had laid out the details of the murder. A week later, when Adam came over and brought up the subject again, Jaron was quick to incriminate himself. He never suspected that Adam was wearing a wireless mike, courtesy of the police. It turned out that Adam had repeated Jaron's story to a roommate -- and word eventually got back to someone who happened to be related by marriage to one of Gwen's forty-some cousins. Her family ran down addresses, phone numbers and license plates, then handed the evidence over to the cops.

The next day, Jaron found himself back on Interstate 880, pointing the way northeast to Silver Fork, a rocky, remote campground in the mountains near Lake Tahoe. On the way, he retraced for the cops what happened after they killed Lida. How the four of them piled into Mike's truck, the body flung in back along with the shovels and pick. How they headed for Silver Fork because they had gone there as kids, and because Jay heard there was only one sheriff patrolling the whole vast wilderness up there. How they drove the four hours in near-total silence, making sure not to exceed the speed limit, until they finally climbed into the mountains and hung a right -- right here -- at Silver Fork Road. How they bumped farther and farther into the woods, until they were almost lost amid the cedar trees. How they fell into perfect sync as they dug a makeshift grave, everything quiet except for the wind and the whoosh of the nearby river. How you could hear Lida's body thud on the ground when they dragged it out of the back of the truck and flung it in the grave. How Jose broke the silence, saying, "I could kick her a couple more times, shit makes me so mad." How they threw rocks on top of the body and heaved a hollow tree trunk over the grave to make it look more natural. How, realizing that they were hungry, they hit the drive-through at the first McDonald's they spotted, just down the mountain in Placerville.

* * * *

By the time her mutilated body was extracted from the rocks and dirt of Silver Fork, Gwen Araujo had already been transformed into a civil-rights martyr. Young and beautiful and murdered just outside the capital of queer America, she made the perfect poster child for a transgender-rights movement just beginning to gain recognition. In Newark, almost a thousand people attended her open-coffin funeral. "We had to put a turtleneck on her because the rope marks on her neck were all the way up to her chin," her mother recalls. In San Francisco, her death inspired a shrine honoring transgender victims of violence -- including two more Bay Area residents who were murdered before Gwen's case went to trial. Activists sold Gwen T-shirts and CDs and raised money for a memorial fund. "She's become a sort of queer saint in the folk religion of my people," says Patrick Califia, a transgendered activist and author.

But in Newark, even Gwen's mourners weren't sure it was quite so simple. Joe Magdalena, a Newark High senior who wore angel wings to Gwen's funeral, says he can relate to the Three Stooges. "I could never see myself doing what those boys did," he says. "But I can kind of see from their mind-set, their homophobia, what they were doing." They thought having sex with Gwen made them gay -- "and in their world, that'd basically be death. That's the way they look at it."

The Stooges went on trial for first-degree murder last April. All three pleaded not guilty. For the first time, though, the three friends parted company. Jay, claiming it was "not my trip," insisted he was innocent of everything except helping to bury the body. Mike and Jose didn't deny that they had killed Gwen but claimed there was no premeditation involved -- they just snapped because she deceived them. Their "deception defense" incensed many civil-rights advocates, who were reminded of the controversial "gay panic defense" used for years by the killers of gay men. "Nobody says they didn't have a right to be angry when they found out she had male anatomy," says Christopher Daley, co-director of the Transgender Law Center in San Francisco. "But does that mean they had a right to beat her and kill her?" Gwen's mother is even more blunt. "Murder is murder," Sylvia says. "A child is a child. This is an issue of humanity."

At the trial, Jaron pleaded guilty to manslaughter and testified against his friends in return for a reduced sentence of eleven years. Much of his grisly testimony was backed up by Nicole Brown and Jose's brothers Paul and Manny. The only one of the Stooges to take the stand was Jay, who might have been better off remaining silent. Far from showing remorse, he grinned and guffawed while describing his drunken capers with Jose and Mike. Asked to describe the murder, he offered a vague, cartoonish version that portrayed himself as Lida's protector and accused Jaron and Nicole of joining in the assault.

When the trial finally wrapped up in June, most of the jurors believed Jaron -- and firmly discounted the deception defense. But after nine days of deliberations, they couldn't decide whether the murder was premeditated -- whether there actually was a Sopranos-like plan to kill Gwen -- or whether it was just a sudden, drunken frenzy of violence. With the jury hopelessly deadlocked over whether to convict for first-degree murder, the judge declared a mistrial. Mike and Jose will remain locked up until the retrial, slated for May; Jay's family sprung him last August on a $1 million bond.

Their victim did get one ruling in her favor, though. After Gwen died, her mother had asked a court to legally change her daughter's name. The day after the murder trial ended, the new name became official. "Edward Araujo Jr." was finally who she wanted to be: Gwen Amber Rose Araujo. Gwen even got something most daughters can only dream about: an apology from her mom. "It is one of my regrets," Sylvia says now, "that I didn't call my daughter Gwen more when she was alive."

Only in death did Gwen Araujo get what she wanted the most: acceptance and attention. Everybody's attention. "She loved the spotlight," says her uncle David Guerrero. "I guess she's got it now."

The police officials added that in recent years the local gay community bath houses were targeted by the prison based gang, "N-14" or "Norteno 14" for an increase in drug distribution and proceeds. The outbreak among these gang members have raised concerns with city and state officials over the possible outbreak of AIDS and continued spead of the deadly virus. An uncommon practice not seen throughout the rest of the state's prison system," stated, Johnny Ojeda, a San Francisco Gang Officer that tracks and indentifies the prison based gang once they are released. The FBI prompted an investigation last year with the cooperation of various law enforcement agencies that linked the recent surge of rape incidents to the prison based gang.

Happy face - This shit is too funny-thanks!.

Stupid fuckers put up these 2 foot reprints that do'nt make a shit to anybody. Check out some other blogs, or hell get your own - they're FREE! and put that crap up. And Wally when he gets back ought to take a hint and dump that shit before it stinks up his blog.. Comments are just that - comments that you have, and write down, short concise - NOT some shit you "borrow".. The net-banging, well that goes w/the territory, and it'll be history in a few.. Been a great study in abnormal behaviour: how a small populace can revert to morons when you cut them a bit of slack.. And Jesus! How the hell you going to explain all that gay shit? Wally was worried about blood on the walls, beer cans, etc. Howzabout ya'll pick up your platform shoes and tutus on the way out?
Damn! It'll be good to read some chisme from los calles instead of news from the YMCA........GJ

That fag shit was started by putas that know what goes on in la pinta. You fags know who you are. If you rape some other dude, like your cellie, you are a FAG. That shit is just fucking wrong and its time that those of you that do it put a fucking stop to it. For you LE putas that read this blog... what the fuck are you thinking? You pieces of shit think that it is okay for some vato to get raped in his asshole? What is going to happen to that vato when he gets out of la pinta? What is going to happen when he comes across some other vato's mother, sister or daughter? Your LE and CO enablers need to learn a fucking history lesson. Most of the prison gangs today were formed because you fuckers enabled others in la pinta in their raping ways. If you fuckers actually did your jobs (especially you CO folks) there would be no need to join a gang for protection from the predators in la pinta.

I seen some shit in my time - like gay vatos joining a gang to be close to you shaved head pendejos. He will be in a car shooting at the enemy one day and at the Arena Night club macking down on some homo dude on gay night. Dancing with a big ass 13 behind his ear and tatted up with gang shit. Here is a typical story, a banger from one hood finds a banger from another hood in a gay club, they make a arraignments not to tell the homies or spread rumors. But they do agree in one thing, they will bang each other.
WTF is this bullshit?

On another note - The pendejos that bitch about El Presidente this, Iraq war that and "human rights" fucking that are a real crackup when they turn a fucking blind eye to the human rights violations that happen in la pinta here every fucking day. Wake the fuck up. You want to control gangs? Then start in la pinta where vatos need to join a gang to keep from getting fucked up or fucked. That shit is fucking wrong and you know it. What does it mean to be transgender?

Transgender is a broad term that applies to people who live all or substantial portions of their lives expressing an innate sense of gender other than their birth sex. This includes transsexuals, cross-dressers and people who simply feel like their biological sex fails to reflect their true gender. Other related terms include:

Gender identity: a person’s innate sense of gender.

Gender expression: the way in which a person presents his or her gender.

Gender non-conforming: individuals who regularly transgress conventional gender norms, although they may not be attempting to present themselves as a different gender.

Transsexual: a person whose innate sense of gender conflicts with their anatomical sex. Some, but not all, transsexual people undergo medical treatments, such as hormone therapy or surgeries, to change their physical sex so that it is in harmony with their gender identity.

Transvestite: an outdated term that refers to people who sometimes cross-dress, or dress in clothing typically associated with the opposite sex. Many cross-dressers are heterosexual and typically present themselves in a manner consistent with their birth sex.

How do transgender people suffer from discrimination?

Workplace discrimination. As in all forms of employment discrimination, transgender people may experience bias during application, employment, promotion and/or termination. An employee may experience gender identity-based discrimination upon coming out as transgender, transitioning on the job, discovery of their birth sex or even mere suspicion of transgender status.

For example, suppose an individual named Mario interviews for a job. The interview goes well and he expects a call back from his prospective employer. However, upon reviewing Mario’s job history, the employer finds out that his former name was Maria and, being unfamiliar with the legal processes associated with changing one’s name and sex, the prospective employer suspects Mario of fraud. He then asks Mario invasive and illegal medical questions, says he thinks Mario is mentally ill and in the end, refuses to hire him.

Repeated instances of this kind of prejudice result in chronic unemployment and underemployment for many transgender people, especially those who do not pass well in their new gender.

According to a 2002 poll commissioned by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, 61 percent of Americans believe that the country needs laws to protect transgender people from discrimination. However, 57 percent incorrectly believe that transgender people already are legally protected from being fired because of their gender identity and expression. In fact, the vast majority of jurisdictions in America still lack legal prohibitions on gender identity discrimination in the workplace.

Hate violence. Transgender people are often targeted for hate violence based on their non-conformity with gender norms and/or their perceived sexual orientation. Hate crimes against transgender people tend to be particularly violent. For example, one expert estimates that transgender individuals living in America today have a one in 12 chance of being murdered.[1] In contrast, the average person has about a one in 18,000 chance of being murdered.[2]

In 2002, community activists commemorated the lives of 27 murdered transgender people in that year.[3]

However, many crimes against transgender people are not reported because of widespread doubts that state and local authorities will treat them with respect or investigate the crimes.

Even in cases where the crime is reported, police response is often inadequate. In the hate crime on which the film “Boys Don’t Cry” was based, 21-year-old Brandon Teena was raped and later killed by two friends after they discovered he was biologically female. Teena had been living as a male and preparing for gender-reassignment surgery when he moved to Falls City, Neb., and befriended John Lotter and Tom Nissen. Upon discovering that Teena was biologically female, Lotter and Nissen became enraged and raped and beat him. Teena reported the crime to the police, but Richardson County Sheriff Richard Laux, who referred to Teena as “it,” did not allow his deputies to arrest the two men. Five days latter, on Christmas Day 1993, Lotter and Nissen found Teena in a farmhouse where he was staying with a friend, Lisa Lambert. They shot and stabbed him to death, then killed Lambert – in front of her 9-month-old son – and Philip DeVine, another friend in the home. JoAnn Brandon, Teena’s mother, filed a civil suit against Laux, claiming that he was negligent in failing to arrest Lotter and Nissen immediately after the rape. The court found that the county was at least partially responsible for Teena’s death and characterized Laux’s behavior as “extreme and outrageous.” [4] (Omaha World-Herald, April 21, 2001; The Associated Press, Oct. 5, 2001; The New York Times, April 21, 2001; Chicago Tribune, April 21, 2001.)

In another apparent anti-transgender hate crime, Hugo Cesar “Bibi” Barajas was found dead in 2002 from multiple gunshot wounds near a Houston club that serves gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Barajas, who was anatomically male, was dressed as a woman at the time of the murder and was found in a halter top, blue jeans, silver high heels with straps and a woman’s wig. According to police, she was also wearing makeup. At the time of this writing, police were investigating the murder as a possible hate crime, but had no suspects, motives or witnesses. Since the murder, the Texas Gender Advocacy & Information Network and other national groups called for the state hate crimes law to be amended to include coverage for gender identity- or gender non-conformity-bias motivated crimes. The groups cited six other murders of transgender women in the Houston area since 1999.[5]

Transgender people are frequently mistrustful of local law enforcement authorities because they often lack training and understanding of transgender people. This lack of understanding illustrates the need for a federal backstop for state and local authorities, particularly in cases where the local law enforcement authorities exhibit intolerance or fail to investigate or prosecute cases of transgender hate crimes.

Sixty-eight percent of Americans believe that we need laws to protect against anti-transgender hate crimes, according to a poll commissioned by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation in 2002.

Health care and other discrimination. Transgender people also frequently suffer discrimination in health care. For example, female-to-male transsexual Robert Eads of rural Georgia developed cervical cancer but could not find a doctor to treat him. Twenty simply refused. He eventually found one more than 130 miles from home, but by then, Eads’ partner said, it was “just too late.” He died in 1999. [6] Anti-transgender discrimination also occurs in housing, credit and public accommodations.

Federal law currently provides only limited protection to transgender people.

Although Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits sex discrimination in the workplace, most federal courts have held that Congress did not intend this to include gender identity or sexual orientation.[7] Recently, some federal courts have recognized that sex discrimination can involve gender stereotyping and that a 1964 understanding of the term “sex” should not necessarily control how the law is construed today.[8] In addition, no federal coverage is provided by the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). In enacting ADA, Congress specifically exempted the transgender community from coverage.

How have states and municipalities dealt with transgender discrimination?

Currently, California, Minnesota, Rhode Island and New Mexico are the only states that explicitly include the term gender identity in their anti-discrimination laws. Five additional states have judicial or administrative rulings in which discrimination based on gender identity has been found to be actionable under sex and/or disability discrimination laws. They are: Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Hawaii. Many states have modeled their disability laws after the ADA, so in those states, the transgender community is also exempt from coverage.

Many jurisdictions nationwide have added gender identity to their local non-discrimination ordinances. Those include: Chicago and Cook County, Ill.; Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Allentown, Pa.; Dallas; Denver; Ypsilanti, Mich.; Baltimore; and Portland, Ore. For a full list, visit HRC Foundation’s WorkNet project.

Has corporate America protected the transgender community?

According to HRC WorkNet, the number of private sector employers that address gender identity and expression has grown significantly in recent years. More than a dozen Fortune 500 companies now include gender identity in their non-discrimination policies, an increase of more than 300 percent since 2001, when only five companies did so. In addition, hundreds of private and public employers have implemented non-discrimination policies covering gender identity, including Lucent Technologies, Apple Computer Inc., IBM and Best Buy. Click here to find employers with policies that cover gender identity.

Public opinion polls show Americans support inclusion under law.

In July 2002, the HRC Foundation commissioned the firm, Lake, Snell, Perry and Associates Inc. to conduct a national opinion poll of American voters on the subject of transgender people and related public policy issues. The poll found a surprisingly high level of familiarity with transgender people. Of those surveyed, seven in 10 said they are familiar with the term transgender, and after being read a brief definition of transgender, nine of 10 voters said they had heard of transgender people.

A plurality of voters say they are neutral toward transgender people. However, those who know a transgender person expressed more positive feelings toward them.

On public policy issues, 61 percent of those polled said that we need laws to protect transgender people from discrimination, and 68 percent said we need a federal hate crimes law that includes transgender people. Seventy-seven percent said that transgender students should be allowed to attend public schools.

A Florida prisoner whom we will identify only as P.R. was beaten, suffered a serious eye injury, and assaulted by an inmate armed with a knife, all due to his refusal to submit to anal sex.
After six months of repeated threats and attacks by other inmates, at the end of his emotional endurance, he tried to commit suicide by slashing his wrists with a razor. In a letter to Human Rights Watch, he chronicled his unsuccessful efforts to induce prison authorities to protect him from abuse. Summing up these experiences, he wrote: "The opposite of compassion is not hatred, it's indifference."

Human Rights Watch undertook three years of research to expose the problem of male rape in U.S. prisons. The resulting 378-page report is based on information from over 200 prisoners spread among thirty-four states, some of whom were interviewed personally, as well as an exhaustive survey of state prison authorities.

Why get in a car when you can hop in a boiler? Why tell someone to shut up when you can tell them to close their head? Why threaten to discharge a firearm when you can say, "Dust, pal, or I pump lead!"

This is the language spoken by Philip Marlowe, Sam Spade, Mike Hammer and the Continental Op. When Cagney, Bogart, Robinson and Raft got in a turf war, this is how they talked.

All coppers leave Wally's blog or I start pumpin lead, and o yea the Carnales send their felicitations, and there's no amatory intent in the message if ya know what I mean copper.

Back from the hustle, and by the looks of the blog Wally must be not only a possible illigitimate son of "Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany", but probably shares dna with the "Marquis de Sade". Who the hell unleashed "S"? All I see is his philosophical take on "the anus as a whole" fantasies.

While I was in El Paso I read an article in the "EP Times" (good paper, definately left wing!)written by "Jose de la Isla" which If I may paraphrase, says that the hysteria concerning Mexican Immigrants and the supposed "crime wave" they are responsible for is nothing but propaganda and bullshit.
The minute men and the other right wing, haters would have us believe the opposite but according to Dr. Ruben Rumbaut, of UC Irvine, and Dr. Walter A. Ewing, of the Immigration Policy Ceter which published the study found that between 1994 and 2000 the rates of incarceration for immigrants was amazingly low.
In that period when the US undocumented population doubled to 12 million, crime fell in all major categories when comparing immigrants and the native population it was found that MExican Immigrants were eight times less likely to be incarcerated than their US counterparts.
THe issue of immigration according to Dr. Ewing is more about soundbites and politics than about data
For more than a century reports like this one have been saying the same thing "levels of criminality among foreign born are lower than native US citizens.
Rumbaut says "there is something in the DNA of AMerican society, this fear that strangers .... undermine the welfare of natives."

De la Isla continues, (hey our old hero Twain!), Mark Twain's wry wit comes to mind:
"There are lies, damn lies, and statistics."
But if the statisics have been telling us the truth all along, public opinion that believes the contrary must fall into the categories of "lies and damn lies."

Then I read the story of the Texas politician who wants to hold back any US citizenship rights to children born in the US to undocumented immigrants.
THis fascist is claiming that the right to citizenship for people born in the US and guaranteed by the US Constitution, was only a nod to the "Black Slaves" freed by President LIncoln and shouldn;t be applicable to US born Mexicans if they have illegal parentage.
Talk about a political opportunist!
And many supposedly good "Christians" are backing this shit up. Didn't St. Joseph and his preganant wife Mary travel as immigrants from persecution ect; and wasn't the baby Jesus born in a manger while on the move to find a better life in Egypt? Short memories on these "Christian people"

A couple of days ago as I was going into a joint for lunch in downtown Juarez I ran into a kid of about 14 at the door, he was all skinny and dirty and looked like he was fucked up on glue or something. He resembled my own grandson who is tall and skinny, I told him to go inside and get something to eat and gave him 200 pesos. He just looked at me cause he couldn't hardly speak being all fucked up, so he just kind of collapsed at the front entrance.
I went inside but could see him outside laying on the sidewalk, the other people and the owner of the restraunt were all concerned about him as well. It wasn't five minutes before a young woman from the Juarez social services showed up and started talking to the kid in a very sympathetic and motherly manner.
I could hear her asking the kid questions about what had happened and it seemed he was kicked out of his house by his father and was homeless on the street.
This lady really impressed me with her sweet demeanor and it wasn't long before the kid followed her down the street to a shelter.
The owner of the cafe told me that the shelter was a nice place with loving and caring staff but that it was way crowded and needed more funds to operate.
As I was driving out of Juarez I noticed that there were collections being taken all over the place for the orphanage and shelters and it struck me as ironic that everyone I saw, no matter how poor or in a hurry stopped and gave whatever they could to the people asking for donations.
If that kid would have been in LA he probably would have starved or been abused and nobody would give a shit about him, especially people who could afford to help.
Mexico with many poor people seems to have a little more humanity than what I usually witness here in the good ol USA, maybe I'm wrong but here it's more a "dog eat dog", "the have's vs the have not's".
Despensa, just some observations from the road.

Not only do we have actual city services for children in that situation (does Mexico?), but the police would have been busting down that father's door to haul him off to prison/deportation proceedings. Don't tell me that America isn't compassionate because we don't want Mexico's problems. Our compassion is so much greater than in Mexico that it has actually been institutionalized, unlike Mexico who refuses emergency medical services to people without money or to even educate it's own children who can't produce a birth certificate (which costs a fortune there). Not to mention the way Mexico treats it's poor illegals coming from Guatemala and further south. So don't give me this crap about Mexico being more compassionate and moral. You(?) are here because you know America has more compassion and you know it. We just don't take kindly to being abused by foreigners who break into this country.

By the way, Jesus' family weren't in violation of Egyptian laws when they went there. They didn't go there to drop a child and claim benefits.

Excuse us for taking citizenship seriously, but it's necessary to keep our country from becoming as crappy as Mexico, Central, and South America. You must know what I'm talking about if you're here. While you're here for your "better life" at Americans' expense, you're helping to sink the lifeboat you just climbed into.
